Arthur Blank shares the story of approaching Ross Perot with an opportunity to buy a 50 percent stake in Home Depot for $2 million and Perot’s criticism of the Home Depot team’s cars, clothes and facial hair. Blank points out that the $2 million investment Perot declined would now be worth roughly $90 billion.

Re: the dress code, Ross made his bones as the best salesman IBM ever had and in those days IBM was either grey suits or navy blue suits with white shirts and ties with polished shoes., so little wonder he carried that over to his next ventures. It was pretty much the same when I started my first Engineering job at Martin Marietta in the early 80's; my first V.P. had a policy that the engineers could hang their jackets up when they arrived at work but if they left the department for any reason you had to put it back on (a Ph.D. Aerospace Engineer who works for a large American defense contractor's Missile Systems company).

Perot had no business in that election and them letting him participate in that ‘ three way debate ‘, something that had never, nor will likely ever be allowed again. It was only because he was a billionaire and would have been the worst choice ( until) this election for president. Another butt sucking from the elites. Glad he ‘lost out’ on the Home Depot investment.

I think If Ross Perot would have played his cards a little bit better and didn’t act weird toward the end of that presidential campaign, he could have won that election. Everyone was talking about Perot. Even My dad made up his mind to go and work on his campaign, then he started to show very bizarre behavior. He was right about the negative aspects of NAFTA and I think Trump learned a lot from Perot as to what not to do in campaigns. He was a very interesting guy.

Well Home Depot meant the death of small business hardware stores...so it's not surprising that Ross Perot wasn't interested in investing. Perot was against NAFTA, he wasn't for selling out U.S. jobs and community, which big box stores like Home Depot and Wal-Mart helped to do. Glad this guy and his family are doing well though. He seems well intentioned and worked hard, just not a big picture thinker.

@Victor Block I was simply stating that Ross Perot had investing principles and Home Depot didn't meet them. Just because you have wealth does not mean you have greed as well. Perot didn't need to invest in Home Depot and he wasn't a greedy individual.

I have a question Graham. I found you on KZfaq a few months ago, and I'm a big fan; but I just recently found out I could watch the full interviews by finding the local station and time on your website. I was wondering when you upload all the clips, does it include the full interview broken up into segments; or are there parts that you don't upload to KZfaq? The reason I'm asking is because if the full interviews have more content I'd like to watch be able to watch them, and I was wondering if they're is any way I could do that? Do you have the full length videos instead of clips somewhere, or could I purchase them somehow?

Your knowledge on this matter is quite shallow. First off, he did not "win" his fortune. If you know anything about EDS, you'd know how shrewd of a businessman he is. Secondly, the way you talk about his decision not to invest in Home Depot shows me that you know very little about the steps and considerations that go into the decision making process behind venture capital investing. It's not about trying to find every winner. If you do that, you'll go broke faster than you can blink.

Lance Hedges Firstly, that you object to my turn of a phrase shows me that you are limited in your ability to command the English language, at its height. Secondly, that you have the temerity to suggest how someone doesn't know about the various plays in venture capital because one doesn't follow your prescription, is utterly laughable. Save your bafflegab for someone else. I am intimately familiar with many things; including, but not limited to, running a company I built that's worth exactly 40% of Mr. Perot's. To be more blunt: Fuck off. If you don't like my opinion, be polite. Otherwise, oh yes, fuck off.
