Arthur Duncan (born September 25, 1933) is an American tap dancer, known for his stint as a performer on The Lawrence Welk Show from 1964 to 1982, which, along with his earlier inclusion (despite Southern objections) on the 1954 Betty White Show, made him the first African-American regular on variety television programs.
Born in Pasadena, California, Duncan entered show business at age 13, when he was a member of a dance quartet that performed at McKinley Junior High School in Pasadena, California.
He later entered Pasadena City College to study pharmacy, but left to pursue a career in show business, touring with The Jimmie Rodgers Show and The Betty White Show. In 1957, Duncan joined Bob Hope's troupe touring U.S. military bases, making him the first African American to be part of that 100-member group.[5]
After several years of appearances in Europe, Duncan was discovered by Lawrence Welk's personal manager Sam Lutz. After appearing as a guest on the show, Lawrence Welk offered Duncan a permanent spot as a member of his "musical family."
The 1989 film Tap featured Duncan in a cameo appearance with other famous tap dancers.
In 2004 Duncan was honored at the annual "Tap Extravaganza" in New York City.
In 2006, Duncan was honored for his contributions to tap dance at the 15th Annual St. Louis Tap Festival.
In 2017, Duncan appeared on the series premiere episode of the reality talent series Little Big Shots: Forever Young, where he performed a dance and reunited with actress Betty White.
In 2018, Duncan made an appearance on The Talk as part of a surprise for co-host Sheryl Underwood who performed a tap dance routine with Savion Glover as part of the show's New Year's Evolution. Underwood said Duncan was her inspiration for tap dancing. Duncan gave Underwood flowers to congratulate her return to tap dancing.
In 2020, Duncan was inducted into the International Tap Dance Hall of Fame of the American Tap Dance Foundation. - Wikipedia

In January 4, 2023, Arthur Duncan passed away. He was one of a kind tap dancer and entertainer that will be missed. However, I am happy that he is with Jesus in heaven, and that he is with Betty White and Lawrence Welk again. Arthur, thank you for the wonderful memories that you gave me. Rest in peace.

Looking forward to this being uploaded and share. I think it's too bad that Arthur Duncan isn't really mentioned a lot along with other well known, orchestrated, household figures like Jimmy Slyde, Bill Robinson, Nicholas Brothers, etc. It's also too bad for Betty White especially knowing that her life was well lived and that she lived a great life of her own as many of us still mourn and grief her last presence on earth at 99 before reaching a milestone age. Rest In Paradise in the Heavens Betty!

She didn’t live a good life being famous is an evil game and you probably need to open your eyes on how depressed they really are it’s sad what they have to do to get their and what they have to do while they’re where they thought they wanted to be and what they have to do too keep their spot o feel bad for them really. All famous people cause you don’t understand the physical and mental abuse they have to go through jusg because they are made to smile and act like their life is perfect doesn’t mean it really is look up gematria and figure out how to cypher the numbers to their death dates and their ages after you do your own research on how evil the whole music, sports acting and all of those industries are
@TimeStepsandParallels
@TimeStepsandParallels 2 жыл бұрын
@@finnesskid2815 I didn't think she was that kind of celebrity that most people in general wanted her to be, but that didn't mean that she didn't stop doing what she loved regardless of whether she was happy or not. You certainly didn't see her out in the spotlight a lot of times unlike most celebs that were on the spot 24/7, so I understand completely what you are saying and I respect your opinion. I agree that the music and the sports industry, referring to the NFL have dealt with a lot of conflict with racism which is why I feel like some people are afraid to treat them equally, not disclude them just because of their skin color or where they came from, but this post alone is about betty. Again, I respect your own opinion and glad you said your piece, but Betty was more than just what most people called a "celebrity", but an actual person.

@@TimeStepsandParallels they all are and I feel bad for them because they have to go through more than what people know not saying any of them are bad people they’re innocent people who are made to do bad things like there’s no way out of the contracts and they like to get them when they are young. A lot of them real young and they’re all out through mk ultra programming then they have to make real life sacrifices to keep their spot and if they break the oath stuff happens to them like being sent to jail or getting killed off. There’s a lot more darker things that happen where I don’t think you’re understanding you just gotta rally peep the stuff and be open minded about it like this world is a stage and it’s all a game. It’s way deeper than racism

I love the story with Betty White's response to all the networks in the south demanding they remove Arthur from the show. She replied, "well.. live with it" and proceeded to feature Arthur in as many shows as she possibly could and then the show was eventually cancelled. Betty was helping to integrate TV, one year before: the Emmett Till tragedy......the Montgomery Bus Boycott....the Civil Rights Movement....the emergence of Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X. I LOVE people who are *genuine* and not "virtue-signaling" (like modern, so-called "Progressives").....or, jumping on the latest "protest" to be trendy and appear righteous. It all comes down to: What are you willing to sacrifice, for your convictions? Betty was willing to sacrifice her TV show. P.S.: Because of her soothing, inviting, TV-friendly personality....Betty could easily sell any product!! Damn, I was about to buy Geritol, myself!!🤣

Arthur Duncan has always been class. He didn't know how to Tom nor was he interested. He was a top tier entertainer on the Lawrence Welk show and was a regular feature of the Welk cast. Betty White was talented and classy... until they cheapened her by giving her roles where she was vulgar and foul. They exploited her as they do with a lot of senior citizens. When it comes down to it she let it happen. Its sad. R.I.P. Betty White.
