Loved the piece. I lived 3 doors away on the opposite side of Cedarhurst Circle from 1963-1965 and I remember it well. Our parents whispered, "I think some hippie band moved into the castle house." I was 12 or 13 and just thought they were cool, had no idea it was Love.

They really fizzled out by 1967 during the making of Forever Changes. In fact, Jac Holzman offered MacLean a solo contract - apparently to lure him back to the Forever Changes sessions because they were fracturing - and when Arthur found out, he canned Bryan. That was pretty much it. Those MacLean demos are available on iTunes and are raw and beautiful at times. Including two acoustic versions of Alone Again Or.

Great video about such a great band! Makes me happy they're getting so much respectful recognition. Forever changes is an album I played constantly when it came out. Bummer in the Summer was my song. This video is testament to that old cliche, "Only in L.A." Looking back on that time, it's amazing how many earth-shaking groundbreaking bands were associated with L.A. in the sixties: Love, Doors, Buffalo Springfield, Captain Beefheart, and others. Joni Mitchell, also.

fascinating stuff. I did see Love live once at the Valley Music Theater. They launched into Revelation and Arthur sang his parts and went and layed down behind the amps. The stage rotated so you'd see him just laying on the floor back there. Then for the end, he came back out and sang his bit. They were badasses.

I thought I recognized "The Cedars", "Norma Talmadge Estate", as it was also called. I think it's the same Castle home. Madge Bellamy also lived there just after it was built , among many more stars. I also believe it was restored between 2004-2006, It's absolutely beautiful inside. I watched the unveiling on tv and remember the documentary they showed about the restoration. Thanks again for your fantastic posts. There's a lot I missed when I lived near Los Angeles.

Very true, but New Orleans is in it's own universe, which we love down here! Dr. John played with every Black musician he knew, and he knew them all. Sly Stone's band, and Little Feat were integrated also.

@@theAxehound I think Satchmo and King Oliver played with White musicians and Louis Prima fronted Sam Butera's band. Times Picayune writer John Wirt did Huey "Piano" Smith's autobiography: Huey "Piano" Smith and the Rocking Pneumonia Blues. There's a lot of insights into the music scene in New Orleans during the late 40's, 50's and early 60's. Huey is one of those underrated genius' who never got full credit for his songwriting and performing. Rock In Peace - Huey

if you look at the "Castle" from an overhead view you can see the street is in the form of a circle...when the estate was first built it consumed the whole circle, it was one vast property parcel...later the parcel was divided up into several sub parcels, which are the other properties you see within the circle of the estate now...it went from I believe 5 acres of property to 1 acre

Wow, I am amazed at the accuracy of your Da Capo Castle Vlog. What a great job you did giving us more insight about Arthur Lee and his story. I was 14 in 1967 and my band covered many Love songs of that time. We played Love's version of "Hey Joe", which came out before Jimi Hendrix's "Hey Joe", which was fast and snappy, much like Ooh bip bip, Ooh bip bip, yeah. Much to my amazement was the bit you mentioned that Jimmy James played with Arthur Lee in those days. Maybe Love's version of Hey Joe was really from J. Hendrix. Who knew??. I sure didn't.

Would love it if you could find Arthur Lee's house with the inside/outside pool that was used in the movie The Trip circa 1967. You have to drive to the top of Kirkwood and walk up Oak Court to find it. Not sure if it was renovated to the point of being unrecognizable or not. You cannot see Oak Court on Google Maps, just where Kirkwood ends. I guess it is a private road. House is also featured in the Love promo clip for "Your Mind And We Belong Together" which you can find on KZfaq.

Daze with Jordan the Lion Great, thank you. I have asked Johnny Echols and several others on the scene back then where the house was and all they could say was "it was at the very top of Kirkwood." If you want the address of the house that Arthur Lee lived in between The Castle and The Trip House, I have it. It is in Laurel Canyon.

8563 Brier Drive is the address of Arthur's house right after he moved out of The Castle so he must have lived there from 1966 to 1967. He moved into The Trip house in summer 1967. Another group member lived with him on Brier; I think it was Ken Forssi.

The Trip house is 1885 Blue Heights Drive and a second house numbered 1817 is attached to it. You can see the outdoor part of the indoor/outdoor pool it if you look on Google Maps and set it to look above the house (I guess that is called an “eagle eye view”).

Thank you for this tour, Jordan! I loved hearing you tell the stories and seeing the "castle". You have so much knowledge. I didn't know that Butterfield Blues Band played those Dylan shows in 65. I was listening to this Johnny Echols interview yesterday on Vinyl Rewind's channel and he mentioned that their reluctance to tour was also due to not being able to play in the segregated South to integrated audiences. He said they made as much money touring in California with lower overhead. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y5ioh8eJntrHaH0.html. There's also a good interview with Johnny Echols on Pamela Des Barres' podcast. I got to see Love in 2002 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. What a dream come true! It sounded amazing and was something I never thought I'd get to experience.

I am a fan of Love since Forever Changes in the late 60’s. Moved to LA and saw Arthur Lee at the Whiskey one night in about 1980. Arthur was SPACED on drugs. Bryan MacLean was in the crowd down front. I don’t know if Arthur played ANY songs, but he went and threw a glass of water or something in Bryan’s face!! Then Spaced Out Arthur lied down on the stage and just kept repeating something about Jesus. After 20 minutes or so, most of the crowd left. I was among those last to leave. About 25 years later , I saw a sobered up Arthur Lee and band perform an exemplary set of Forever changes at House of Blues, Disneyland. It was GREAT!! He died a year or two later. RIP Arthur Lee.
