Scientists at the University of Waterloo in Canada have come up with a new design for an artificial leaf. Not only is this technology 10 times more efficient than plant photosynthesis, it might help us move away from the fossil fuels that are getting us into so much trouble.
Since the 1970s, research groups from around the world have been vying to create the first fully-functioning, commercially viable artificial leaf. As a result, various iterations of artificial leaf technologies have unfurled across the world, with each new design building on the success of its predecessors. But the latest breakthrough comes from a Waterloo University-based team.
Instead of producing glucose and oxygen like plants do, this artificial leaf tech is capable of producing methanol, which is a cleaner burning fuel than gasoline, while also scrubbing carbon dioxide from the air and producing oxygen.

10x my ass. prior to this video a search for "artificial leaf" pulled up results from at least 11 months ago and all narrated by people with some pretty thick accents. also the only actual "footage" you used of this fuel was something featured in one of those previous videos, nothing but a still image in which we don't even know exactly what we're looking at. I'm gonna go ahead and safely say, pics or it didn't happen.

With the population increasing exponentially, the demand on aggriculture is also rising exponentially, so we need to increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to help crops grow. It's a scientifically proven fact that the recent rise in CO2 has made the planet greener. If there actually was a problem with the climate and not a problem with the climate chuch's priests being hungry for power and wealth, then all we would have to do is paint everything white to reflect solar energy back into space, like when the Earth was a snowball for 6 million years. That's how long it took for the carbon dioxide from volcanic activity to build up in the atmosphere enough to cause the global warming that saved the world. A global respray just focussing on buildings for a start would be thousands of times more cost effective than trying to control the climate by reducing our life-giving miracle gas carbon dioxide which we depend on to live.

@@taj4137 Increasing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is no risk, there isn't enough of it for plant life to reach its normal growth potential. Extreme weather is usually caused deliberately by people using cloud-seeding techniques, it's nothing to do with CO2. Most commercial greenhouses already do use higher CO2 concentration anyway, which is a good idea, I agree.

Okay wait hold the phone, you’re leaving something out. There’s no way this is as good as it sounds but only gets a 4 minute video. My question is what’s the catch? Maybe I’m misunderstanding the point, which is just that this is an informative bit and not a comprehensive report about a newly emerging technology. How difficult is it to synthesize and handle Cuprous Oxide? What’s your cost/result margin? How controlled must the environment be for this technology to be viable? You pointed out that artificial leaves are 10x better at converting sunlight to glucose than actual plants, but you didn’t specify what plants or how critical this one interaction is to the synthesis of alternative fuel (because glucose is not methanol, which is the target substance, not sugar). I want to be excited about this, but it just seems too good to be true with only a 4 minute video and no headlines or mainstream buzz about it.

Why would you even want a flying car? If you wanna fly get a plane and if you wanna drive get a car. There are vehicles already in existence which can do both. They are nothing but unnecessary burden since if you prefer to fly then it's parts as a car is useless and if you prefer to drive then vice versa.

There actually are flying cars, they came out with them in 2018, but the FFA hasn't approved any of their licensing because it's too dangerous to let regular people fly around. The death toll would be insane. So right now their work around is to make them completely automated and have them replace UBER and cabs.

Artificial Leaf: (I found a local one from our regional news column about a years ago while preparing for exams) • It is also known as Quantum Leaf which was developed by Indian Institute of Sciences’ researchers. (based on works of biophysicists from the University of California, Berkeley.) • It uses water, sunlight and carbon dioxide to produce a widely-used gas syngas (mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide) without releasing any carbon dioxide into the air. This will help in reducing carbon footprint. • It is composed of completely bio-compatible, earth abundant, semiconductor nano crystals called Quantum dots which act as catalyst to convert absorbed CO2 into bicarbonate and then ‘formate’ (derivative of formic acid) that can be used as bio fuel.

Dude As a university student studying agriculture i can tell u this is 100% a HOAX. In order to turn carbon into a vesolic ring a huge amount of energy is required. Even if the experiment a these universities work what they DIDNT mention is that the amount of methanol produced is way to low to be further processed. This is nothing more than an experiment .

I m currently studying agriculture so i know how photosynthesis works on a molecular level in and out.i can ensure u that those experiments done in america are pretty interesting though they're not the solution we are Searching for , for a variety of reasons .mainly cause creating a benzolic ring out of CO2 which first needs to be broken up, needs on a molecular lvl huge amounts of energy which sun light alone can not provide. So i dont think what they presented is gonna be used in the future. It could be used as a basis but the technology is gonna differ greatly. And my point is that everyone in the comments thinks that the technology has already been discovered and could be applied in the near future which couldn't be further from the truth

I don't believe this technology will be used soon and just with their video on nuclear fussion i think their videos are pretending something that might happen in 50 years in a different variety, can happen now, with what they are presenting, which i would call utterly sensationalistic. Calling it a 'hoax' seems too strong a wording although i agree with your points. A flatearther might call the heliocentric model a hoax. But sensationalising technology which is barely in their footsteps is not really a hoax. They also seem to lack production value to get their facts completely straight sometimes, still hoax is a strong accusation.

Long ago, a Indian science fiction writer wrote a fiction named 'हरी पीठ वाला आदमी' i.e. A Man With A Green Back'. The fiction tells a scientist's experiment to create a human specimen which could photosynthesize and produce glucose with the help of its chlorophyll infused back, just like plants do. The story was popular for a while since this could end world hunger in no time, but no one took this idea seriously and it faded with time.

There's a company called hypersolar that's been working on using solar energy to effectively clean dirty water and produce clean water and hydrogen using solar energy. They've made some pretty serious strides to doing this.

@@randybobandy9828 What you're talking about is destroying nature for fuel, not tapping into it. In fact one of the main reason we're this far along into the climate change cycle is because of burning of wood for fuel and the like. That's exactly what we need to be moving away from. Let me put it like this, instead of using a tree as lumber and burning the wood for energy we should instead think of a tree as a tiny power plant, and we need to find a way to tap into that powerplant and divert some of that power. It would be none destructive and also much better in terms of sustained energy.

This could be useful for Mars missions. SpaceX's StarShip uses methane as fuel. They want to create methane for the return trip from CO2 on Mars. Probably using a Sabatier reactor. But apparently it requires a lot of electric energy.

I've wondered if it would be possible to bio-engineer a microbial power cell like mitochondria, and housed them in some type of modified plant like a grass, moss or fungus with a beefed up mycelium network. To create an organic super efficient air scrubbing, photo-voltaic bio-solar network capable of rapid controlled growth in most environments and landscapes. Perhaps turn grey concrete smog filled jungles into clean green energy efficient habitats!.... I think the time, research and finances invested in machine leaf might be better used towards global climate and reforestation initiative's, and increasing effort's to obtain true fusion energy technology.

Why not do both? Make artificial leaves geared at methanol, while also making more effective oxygen leaves as well. Make fuel and help clean the atmosphere equally.

or we can just use a cow's poop to get the methanol. In India people do that, because they have a lot of cows.

I like the Solar Foods approach better. They use electricity and do abiotic electrolysis to make hydrogen and then use the hydrogen for feed stock for bacteria. The electricity is more practical, it can come from spare solar or wind or anything.

As far as what to power the world with the power grid, thorium reactors is an easy answer and we can do it now and it's very cheap and efficient. The start up cost to build the reactors is the only issues but would give power that costs us about 10 times cheaper than current. Thorium is in abundance too and a lot cleaner than uranium no issue with reactor melt downs or radiation leaks, and you cant make weapons out of it so no issue with everyone having it.

Even if it produce the same amount of emissions then it would still technically be munchkin greener then oil considering the fact that you don't have to dig it up out of the ground which produces a lot of pollution in in the first place

Well what do we do with all the oil when,it bubbles up? What all these residual oil pits get struck by lightning and people have to get away grom the toxic fumes. A future problem that could at least be thought about now.

Seriously seeker does a great job. Syntech Global already makes waste conversion with zero emissions possible, with all the additional chemical legos for the cleanest turbine sets. Or the best molten salts SOFCs...or the best nano materials...you want fertilizer? Boom raw sewage conversion. Rolling industrial environmental chemistry sets for all occasions...even hydrogen from your garbage.

As soon as you take CO2 out of the atmosphere to generate methanol, you will definitely push it back into the atmosphere as soon as you use it. The same problem is with trees, yes they take CO2... but the store it, and if you then chop the tree down and burn it, you release all the stored CO2 of the last 10, 20, 50 or 100 years back into the atmosphere... so it's not "clean"

Because of plant photosynthesis you eat food but due to this artificial photosynthesis you can't drink or eat methonol .. plants just don't absorb co2 they have a lot more useful purposes which this invention can't solve... But still hats off for science
