I was encouraged when I saw that this was a guy working out of his suburban home. I thought that it might not be so involved after all. Watching the video brought me back to reality. It is really involved. I'm glad there are people doing this work but there is no way I'm trying this, at least not before I retire.

Thank you Bob and Shibu. Up here we import many many thousands of Cali queens each spring to replace winter losses. You can well imagine how many millions of drones are flying annually with southern genetics. This video adds to a very limited list of instructional vids on II. Thank you.

Thank you Bob and Shibu for posting this. I have debated going down this road because it’s a lot of extra work and hassle moving my mating nucs to an isolated yard which is a 35 minute drive from home. What you folks have taught me with this video is that I am blessed to have a location only a half hour away that is 20 miles from the nearest other bees.

Bob, I want to thank you for all the time you devote to passing yours and others beekeeping knowledge. I have attempted to raise some queens this season here in Australia. I have used the method you described about a year ago and have just reversed the starter box into the finisher. I grafted 20 cells and decided not to disturb the frame but was able to see that at least 12 cells are being developed. To say I am delighted is an understatement - reversing the boxes was like Christmas seeing the cells that the bees have started. You are a great mentor to so many including me - even from a distance. Regards and thank you. Jak, Narooma Australia.

Hello Mr. Binnie, Enjoyed the video. I bet Laidlaw and Mackensen would have been impressed. Most ii queens are just dropped among the bees. Mr. Raj retrieves his virgins from a cloister nuc. No problem as long as the same queen goes back. Banking virgins and banking inseminated queens. The detail is tremendous. A queen is bred at a distance, flies back to the hive with a sperm nodule hanging from the tip of her abdomen. If the nodule is not broken during the retrieval process, then the workers will begin to dry the gut portion of spermal nodule all the way up to the node which will bust. The sperm will then go through the receiving tube to the spermatheca. Apparently she will fly till the s'theca is full. Mr. Raj has a unique method for the eversion process. He apparently wants to control the sperm and the mucus. So he does a double "push". The conventional way is to pinch the head of the drone off. In one fell swoop the abdomen contracts to a hard marble. It is so severe that those with good hearing can hear it. This is the moment of death for the drone. This intense contraction puts the sperm, mucus and water together. These fluids are a medium for the sperm to swim, go into the receiving tube and fill the spermatheca. Mr. Raj has really put forth an effort. I applaud his efforts.

I have pretty much zero interest in doing AI, but at the same time, I am fascinated by his setup and procedures, and I think I would enjoy doing it. He really seems like he understands what he's doing. Thank you for the video Bob! I do have one concern/suggestion, and that is using the non sterile distilled water in a sterile system. My dad used to drink a lot of distilled water (don't do it, it causes long term health issues because it dissolves the minerals from your body to equalize the osmotic pressure, and leaves you depleted..), and I remember it wasn't infrequent that he would complain about getting a batch that was contaminated, tasted like cleaning chemicals,, etc. If you are getting it from a consumer supplier, they have reletively low standards, and no guarantee it's sterile. So I would want to at least boil it and store it in a sterile flask before using it here, which doesn't add much work, but ensures that you don't throw away the alcohol wash by putting non sterile water in next. Small chance of contamination, but why risk it? Other than that assumption of the sterility of the water, I find his procedures meticulous and I would have guessed he was in the medical field, or at least a lab scientist by watching him! If he ever wants to change careers... Lol

Interesting to hear that he's never had a problem with newly hatched virgin queens slipping through the queen excluder. I call those Houdini queens. I've seen it happen many times with my own two eyes over the years. It gets very interesting when you look down and see a virgin queen crawling up your arm, and then flies up like a helicopter taking off. Btw......yeah, I like my carni / cauc crossed mutts as well. Hello Bob. Very informative indeed. Always fascinated from the content provided by you as a person and your crew. Very objective and simple. You are creating a legacy far beyond the physical borders of your country. Regarding the above video do you have any opinion if this method affects the quality, endurance of the F0 queen created? What about the required sperm amount putt into the queen, will it survive the environmental impact outside the body of the male without destroying the spermatozoon's life during the exchange? A big applause!
