Smh your the first person to tell me not to draw lines when trying to depict a realistic face and instead completely relie on shading, some of the best advice that NEEDS TO BE REPEATED MORE. Three art teachers and none of them though to mention that😬😐

OMG REALLY?! To be honest, I'm self taught but I've never heard an art teacher mention that either :( I just noticed that lines made it look more "cartoonish" while rendering facial features with shading alone just gives that illusion of a real face. I think it’s because to someone who draws a lot it seems like common sense, so they don’t think to mention it? Like it’s such basic advice maybe they just forget that and move on to the more advanced stuff I dunno haha. It definitely should be taught more to beginners because I do see people making this mistake a lot (including myself when I first started)

im really surprised no one mentioned he traced the drawing? i got nothing against tracing, i know so many amazing artists who trace, but he definitely tried to cover it up =// also im so glad i stumbled upon your channel! i really like your videos!

BrendaFOBRocks He did not trace, he used a reference photo and it was *clearly* placed next to his sketchbook while he was drawing. *Tracing* is when you put the reference sheet under your paper and trace (copy) detail for detail. James drew this by hand, he did not trace. *You are wrong*

like i said, its not a problem that he traced. turn up the brightness on the computer and you can see the faint lines are there before he draws them.

i can literally take a screenshot from before he put down any lines on camera, change the contrast on photoshop and see the traced lines =/ im not saying james isn't talented. he really is. im saying he isn't honest

you can barelyyy see the lines, not all of them are visible. you can see lines that form nose, the right eye, and the lips. like i said, they are barely visible but they are there.

He didn't sketch it. He traced it lightly and then filled in with shading. Wonder why he printed out the reference photo and it's the exact same size as the art. He didn't use any construction lines and went straight into drawing them without any erasing. He should have stated he traced it before.

Monrove He did not trace, he used a reference photo and it was *clearly* placed next to his sketchbook while he was drawing. *Tracing* is when you put the reference sheet under your paper and trace (copy) detail for detail. James drew this by hand, he did not trace. As an artist myself, you are wrong on so many levels. All artists are not the same when it comes to drawing. I make no guidelines when drawing. Artists that need more help use guidelines. I also go straight into drawing and erase halfway through my completed sketch.

Stephanie Hernandez Here's a little tip for you.... Why would he need a reference photo when he can use his phone/computer to look at? Because he can do whatever he wants......isn't that what you were going to say Stephanie? Lol, no because it's easier to make everyone think you're effortlessly talented by lightly laying down all the ground work, then pressing record and acting like you don't have to struggle. Also tracing does not mean you have to boldly draw in every single detail from your reference. You can trace one part of your image, and that is still considered tracing your image. You should know that if you're going to call yourself an 'artist'. It's like saying you made a cake from scratch but in all reality your frosting is from a can. But hey, I give you props for *making* *your* *comments* *bold* to make it seem like you know what you're talking about.

chaotic_gabby I disagree. There is usually a right way to call something. I think tortillions and blending stumps are two different tools. I'm holding one of each right now. A blending stump is bulkier and has to be cleaned using sand paper while a tortillion is thinner, has a more refined tip, and can be cleaned just by peeling off the paper.
