As an artist (I feel pretentious about describing myself as such) and an African American woman, I needed to see this representation of myself in this historic institution. I’ve been to the Guggenheim, and even named my son Solomon, but I never considered, during the many hours I’ve spent in museums, how little I see myself reflected in the art. Who decides what “art” is, and what is worthy of analysis and display, are essential to understanding culture, and hence, humanity. As Ms. Weems “speaks truth to power”, and describes her audience as “enemies”, I smiled inside. I applaud her for her work, and choosing not to end her installation with a false sense of hope. Just to present the truth as a mirror in which we must all reflect. And I applaud the Guggenheim for presenting work by Ms. Weems as a way to correct the institutional failures of museums as a whole to present diverse art and artists. Brava. My hat is off to your museum for posting this.
