Aeropress Metal Filter v's Paper Filter, which is best?

In this video Luke dives in deep to compare the Metal Filter versus the Paper Filter in the AeroPress Coffee Maker. He discusses his experience using each of the filters and he also brews up an AeroPress Coffee using each filter. Luke also talks through the pro's and cons of each one and lets you know what his preferred option is.

New to the Aeropress and had no clue about the inverted method. This was not explained in the Aeropress instructions. The metal filter now makes sense. Thank you.

Stainless Steel Filter with the Flow Control Filter as well is the one!! Smoooooth coffees!!

Use both! It's awesome. The screen gives a good support for paper filter and much finer yet strong coffee

Amazin. I have used paper filters for many years. I think to increase the flavour of my morning coffees I will acquire the metal filter

It’s a very different taste profile, the oils will bring a great body and complexity to your cup. Cheers luke

I bought the metal filter when I got my aeropress and it is great. I still have most of my paper filters sitting there untouched. Metal all the way!!

I have the same metal filter, and after trying both the paper and the metal many times I prefer the paper one. There's something about it, the purity and the refinement of coffee with a paper filter is amazing. The taste of coffee with a metal filter is a bit "rough around the edges" when compared to the paper one, at least in my experience.

Yes we would agree, it’s the coffee oils and a little fine grind getting into the cup giving more body with the metal. If it’s a nice single use the paper for a crisp clean taste.🤙🏻

Very good presentation. I will need to try the metal screen in the future. I personally find the coffee oils pleasant.

I like the oils too and am of the belief that a lot of oils are very healthy for us, however, I have heard that 2 oils the AeroPress filters manage to stop getting into your cup are known carcinogens or at least research being done on that... Would be nice to know more Also, I've heard the cloth filters or CoffeeSocks are a best-of-both-worlds product, eliminating fines in the cup but also allowing the oils through as well!

I’m happy with the paper filter, but would give the metals a go if there weren’t so many types available with various mesh sizes.

Sure, we like the able disk as it’s one flat surface, and won’t deteriorate, the gauze types that have the outer ss rim can seperate and also are a bit more coarse then we like

What is your view on putting an aeropress paper ontop of your portafilter at home for espresso. I have been doing it for a while now and like the results with the coffee and also the fact there is no grounds making their way back up into the E61 on my machine, which I should think less need to clean with detergents

Yes we have played with this with one on the top and bottom of the puck. It’s good for lower pressure extractions. Scott Rao has lots of tech on this

I have not tested the metal filter with my AeroPress. But have with my drip thru and it changes the taste a lot. Also, I have experimented with wetting the AeroPress filter versus not. And can tell no difference. A box of filters lasts me almost a year. And usually always order in advance. I see this as a non-issue for a smoother better cup of coffee.

Can you explain how you would make more than one coffee at a time? You mentioned it in the context of camping (this is how I mostly use my aeropress) but I couldn’t work out how you would do it. Thx!

You make a stronger recipe, then brew into a cup and split it into multiple cups . As it’s stronger then you top up each cup with hot water

One of the best things about the filter is it's one less item to clean. Just dump it w/ the puck after brewing.

Paper is supposed to be healthier because the reduction of oil in the coffee.

Sure, it would reduce oil for sure, not sure if coffee oil is considered bad health wise?

@@ArtistiCoffeeRoasters There were studies in Sweden or the Netherlands that have said that the oils in the coffee can be bad for people with heart issues. But if you eat a balanced diet and stay active, it's not a huge deal.

Looks like I've been doing it wrong. I wet the paper. Screw it on the bottom. Put over cup. Add the ground. Pour water in tube. Give it a few stirs. Put plunger in and press down. Your video is to far away. Looks like you had plunger already in. Add coffee and water. Put filter in. Invert onto cup. Naw. I like my way.

It's called the reverse aeropress method. It stops water from flowing through prematurely. I like it a bit better, but to each their own.
