Many times you'll hear Lang tell you to accent the second note of a double. At first i don't think this makes a whole lot of sense because it'll result in uneven doubles. Reason why it works is that as you speed it up, you're forced to also accent the first note to get enough rebound for the second. And you end up basically doing push pull. So "accenting the second stroke", really is just another way to fool you into doing push pull doubles :). I practiced push pull for slower tempos as well, and it allows you to get more comfortable, even doubles at all sorts of dynamic ranges and tempos, so you don't rely on having to think about accenting the second stroke. I found push pull to be the best technique for me to do doubles. On very low rebound surfaces it has to come from the wrist though. You can't cheat physics.

Oh yeah I adore Lang and his methods too. It really does make you sound much cleaner and tighter. I won't recommend it for just anyone though, just from an educator's standpoint. But for anyone who wants to go for it, it's super! Love your perspective on this Freeze, cheers!

I’ve got to ask, first of all wonderfully said, but second of all what would a professional drummer do without pads and drums that a hobbyist wouldn’t?

A professional drummer sometimes shows up to a gig and has bad equipment, worn out heads that can't be tuned properly. Hence they don't have the best surfaces to play on. Or they're playing a very loud metal show and need to fight with guitarists to be heard. So both of those situations, being able to fortify the technique with more muscle rather than only rely on rebound helps. You never know what situation, or screw up is going to happen in the professional world. I've lived through a few disasters and learnt things the hard way😂. Also professionals want to sound more even and consistent in general. Hobbyists don't need to as they're playing for themselves :)
