Because he's copying a photograph. This is not an original piece. You saw at the start that he's using a grid. That let's you know he's copying it.

It's not tricky when the background is made dark and all one has to do us rely on the white of the paper and soft rendering to create texture. It's easy to draw or paint pale or white fabric.

The white pencil crayon acts as a blender. Until actual blenders were available, all pencil crayon artists bought a excess of black and white crayons, because the white could be applied to blend other colours together and soften edges. Blenders do the same thing but they are mostly transparent so you end up with a less opaque effect, but in black and white drawings like this one, sometimes a white is better because you're looking for a smoother, opaque effect.

Except it's not an original drawing by hand. If you pay attention at the start you'll see he's using a grid. He's gridded it off because he's copying it from a photograph using a grid technique. That's why the drawing style is so unnatural. No original artist draws like this. Because it's a copying technique. He's probably copying a photo. That's why it looks so good.

This cannot be real!!! It is freakin amazing!! I can’t even come close to doing this, I would have to sketch the entire image first to make sure my proportions are accurate…I would never be able to just do section by section this amazingly. In awe.

Dude, this is extremely impressive! You've got to have a stupid amount of skill, talent and confidence to be able to draw and colour with coloured pencils section by section! I mean seriously, I have to complete the drawing process then colour it! This is next level awesome bro, well done!

"WE BECAME INTERNATIONAL" - Me when I was watching this (I'm Egyptian) They actually put Egyptian songs to this movie series, and they also putted Egyptian actors in this series. It's amazing how he works in this copy style. Like he does one square of the grid he's copying at a time. And each square looks perfect. But no original artist works this way. This is 100% a copy.
