Hey theater students and aspring techies: Listen to a 73-year old IATSE stagehand who's played in the business since he was 12 and has worked "Wicked" three times as a local. Get well-acquainted with the whole picture. Start as soon as you can in local theater but only do it if you can also be a good student. Learn electricity. Learn sound. Learn carpentry and be able to weld. Be willing to work any department if only to broaden your knowledge of how we all work as a team. Study well in your sciences as they will all have a bearing on your ultimate success. Learn set and lighting design and learn how to run lighting consoles and sound boards. Be on time (and that doesn't mean when the curtain goes up!) and show up with the proper tools. ALWAYS. Work safely and healthy and most importantly, understand the benefits of union membership and the benefits of collective bargaining and working under a fair contract. And finally, take pride working in a business that employs some of the finest people in the world and can be damn fun, if you follow its rules.

Wow, I would love to learn more about your story! I really appreciate your advice, and how interesting do you know just how many different skills you need to know. It’s often a good reminder that anything can be possible, but it may not be the easiest road to get there!

@@artrageousnate There are limitless opportunities if you are willing to work hard for them but follow the common sense rules. The best advice I can offer you is never assume you know the answer and never fake it if you don't. There are no stupid questions in theater. If you don't know, ask and when you know the answer, always be willing to share it with those who don't know. And when and if you're shown the correct way to do something, don't respond with the traditional, "I know." Learn and learn again.

There is more money spent on LX than sets in most productions these days. More and more shows are being played to black tabs. Mostly in provincial theatres. It is so important to fight back and bring the set designer and construction artistes back into theatre. Otherwise it will be lost forever. Actors can only play in a space that transports the actors and the audience to that time, space, and place where they are supposed to be.

What experience led this set designer to choose this profession? What does he call the small set they look at, at the start of the video? What evidence is there that the set designer needs to know the script really well? Can you finish the following sentence at the time 4.03 in the video? "What's important in set design for the theatre, especially for musicals, is....." What does a designer need to think about to help focus the audience's sightlines and visual attention? Can you name one safety feature the designer needed to build into the set? Is research important to a designer?
@artrageousnate
@artrageousnate 4 жыл бұрын
These are all great questions! I will send these along to Edward and see if he can answer them for you. I know the small set they created at the beginning of the video was simply called a model or maquette. What I found fascinating was that the model was built precisely to scale so that they could reference it when building the final version. This is why they spent so much time on attention to detail. Thanks for watching and for the feedback!

Thank you Nate for clarifying. What really threw me off is the caption above - scenic designer Edward Pierce. Perhaps you could somehow make it clearer to audiences who may be mistaken eventually by both the video and the caption, that Edward was Eugene's collaborator but it was Eugene who is officially credited as scenic designer.

hahaha! If you are talking about my forehead (this is Nate btw,) then I have to agree! Unfortunately, I do have a huge forehead. I warn people when I'm on stage that I could potentially blind you;) Thanks for watching!

It took me until watching this just now to understand what all the cogs and things were incorporated in the set design for. Still don't care for the show.

@@loveletterz333 Of course there are no satanic rituals. They aren't that stupid ! Do you remember what happened at the Bataclan in Paris in 2015 during a show where "innocent" songs were performed ?
