This is a lecture on these two texts for Arts One at the University of British Columbia-Vancouver (Canada).
Derek Gladwin begins this lecture by talking about the various "waves" of feminism in the West, then discusses how woman has become the "other," according to Beauvoir. He then gives some background on S. Weir Mitchell, the doctor who treated Gilman (and whom she mentions in "The Yellow Wall-Paper"), and his approach to treating neurasthenia. Gladwin also discusses various styles of narration and how we might think about the narrator in Gilman's story, as well as the "feminist gothic" and how we can see elements of that in "the Yellow Wall-paper" as well.

cool lecture! Weird, but theres another lecture by Wes Cecil on Beauvoir where big chunks of the wording used here in this lecture, are almost verbatim repeated in Cecil's lecture. Great info!

It's 'de Beauvoir', not 'Beauvoir'. Palpable laziness in not naming her correctly. There is in all probability an author somewhere name 'Beauvoir'.

'Beauvoir' is more grammatically correct when referencing her by her family name, as the subscript 'de' simply means of, however saying 'de Beauvoir' in English, is not incorrect either (I think). When speaking about Simone de Beauvoir in french and you want to mention something that belongs to her while referencing her only by her family name, if you were to include the subscript 'de' you would get something such as "de de Beauvoir" which sounds odd, thus when referencing her by her last name, the 'de' is not included. And besides one could argue that in all probability there also exists some author somewhere named 'de Beauvoir', thus the last argument you made is futile.
