Wow! These collage are the MOST GORGEOUS I have ever seen! I am truly inspired to start making some of my own paper bits and bobs

This is basically what I thought collage was; creating new vistas or images from coloured paper or cut out images from other sources. Most of the collage I usually see depicted under this term *is* collage, technically, but it's more for non-intrusive or neutral backgrounds then cut up again for junk journaling, art journals, mixed media usage. The way you're using everything makes more sense to me. Love the quick method for creating as many colour combos as possible on the copy paper. Thank you for sharing your steps and processes. Very inspirational!

I love seeing it all come together, I like doing a fabric kind of collage thing with my sewing and adding stitches, patterns and textures in a similar way to yours, I keep every sacred little scrap too. I appreciate the time and the zen you get from collage too. The results are 👌!

I saw this video 1 year ago when it came out and i still think about it a lot. You showed so well how you can make your own paper, your own colors and shapes, the big and detailled shapes... It was so incredible and beautiful it inspired me so much and it still does one year latee. Thank you for this video.

It's really interesting to see how other people work with paper collages. You kind of treat it like paint and you take advantage of the unique textures. I do the actual painting first, and THEN add texture and details with scrap paper.

I found this video after someone recommended it on a Melanie Chadwick video... and I have to say it is the most helpful video I have seen on collaging! I studied fashion design at Uni, was constantly told I couldn't draw and that I should use collage for my fashion illustrations, but was never given any guidance at all on how to really do it properly. Just waved away, and to this day I have issues showing my drawings. You have inspired me Emily. I've already saved this video to come back to if I ever feel stuck again, and I will be ordering this print in September when I'm back in the UK! Thank you SO much! 😘

That was lovely, thank you. I think the bit I haven't grasped with collage is the trial and error bit. I'm more accustomed to the process of having a vision for what I want to do, and executing it with pens usually. Pens are a medium that doesn't have the kind of uncertainty that paint and random bits of paper do. With collage, it seems that it's more about responding to the material of the paper as you go along - a sort of conversation, rather than having the sort of control one can have with pens. What makes the conversation even harder is that I feel under confident with composition. I'm not sure I naturally have a feel for what looks good with collage. Another challenge is that I don't have a particular thing I want to say with collage art. When I draw, I draw people I love, or what I see. With collage, I have a load of images from magazines, so the subject matter can't be people I love or what I see around me in my space. They're found images, which require me putting meaning on to, to create a story with. But it's not really my natural style to respond to papers/images/material in that way. I'm currently collecting bits of packaging from food I'm eating as a sort of snapshot into what I've been eating in this time period. But I really don't know how I want to collage them together. Do I tear them up into little pieces? Do I try to form a particular outline with them, making another image out of the papers? Do I make it quite literal and not tear them up much at all, almost like a scrapbook of packaging? I really, really don't know. So that's where I get stuck. I know one way forward is to try using collage on my normal subject matters of people I love and what I see around me, but it would be really difficult to get a likeness of faces and what I see using collage. Maybe the challenge is to let go of trying to get a likeness, and embrace the abstraction that will come with using a medium that can't be so controlled?
