Even though we had been wanting to visit Arundel Castle for a while, we had no idea what a spectacular castle it was! It has it all… stunning architecture, pivotal history, prominent owners (the Dukes of Norfolk), and vast rooms full of so much to see! In the end, we decided it was one of our VERY FAVOURITE castles ever!
So come along with us as we tour this castle inside and out… and fall in love with it!

I live in the north and trained at St Richard`s Hospital, Chichester, in the south. Ergo, each time I came between hither and thither I`d see Arundel Castle from the approach to the train station. It was a rather beautiful and very attractive Sussex girl who finally drove me to visit Arundel Castlel ( she drove me there through mad enthusiasm - not by car ! ). Apart from the hot day walking along the none - descript straight road between the station and the town the castle was beautiful, as was and is the town. I knocked on the door which was as close as I could get to the castle and asked in a rather rambunctious fashion, if Arthuer was in ! No one took any notice...... It was all a rather long time ago.

This is Ian in the video. While I do agree with Chris that there are some seriously negative things about Britain, we do love it there and are grateful to be able to live there for part of the year. It certainly makes a difference that we are there in the summer. Winters there can be quite dismal. Also, where you live can really color your view of things. We love having a flat in Cheltenham but homes there are really expensive. If I didn't have the ties I have to Britain, I would probably chose a second home in a place like Portugal where it is more affordable and the weather is better. Despite my accent, I've been a British citizen all my life and that also makes it easier for us to be there. The UK has 70 million people living in an area the size of Oregon. That sort of overpopulation is going to cause problems. In my opinion the best thing they've done is carve out areas that are AONB's (the Cotswolds is one) and National Parks that are mostly unspoiled by development and are truly lovely. Unfortunately, 20th century planners made some really bad decisions that have negatively impacted the atmosphere of many towns and cities. There's a good example you will see in Cheltenham, Eagle Tower (I call it "evil tower). It's a 1960's brutalist monstrosity office tower that dominates the town. My ancestral home town of Birmingham has many of these that they tore down beautiful Victorian architecture to build. Despite this, I still love Cheltenham and enjoy visiting Birmingham. The number of beautiful places to visit in Britain seems endless. I've been there 30 - 40 times and yet the list of places we still want to visit grows beyond our capacity to see them. (sorry for the long-winded response).

Now there are a lot of comments I wanted to make...but one that can't be missed is of the young Earl who had his cadaver sculpted before death to prove a point many prominents today could learn from. Absolutely stunning- and yes it looked really like a castle one would draw as a child and keep that image as an adult. I've known about the Catholic and Anglican churches were 'close'. It makes me think of the human trait- "you aren't right, you aren't wrong, but we will do this our way". and a new 'strain' of a life's vision is born. A stunning castle, I really think this one will be hard to beat. Dara and Ian- fantastic documentation 👌. Thank you so much! 🙏 Have a great week. 🩷🇳🇱🙋‍♀🇳🇿

A tip for pronouncing British place-names: 9 times out of 10, we emphasise the first syllable of the name - LONdon, EDinburgh, BUCKingham PALace, ARundel, etc. I've noticed that Americans often emphasise the last syllable, like BuckingHAM Palace.

This is one very impressive castle! The castle 'chapel' is basically a small cathedral, it's fascinating that the family have been able to keep the castle and it wasn't given to the National Trust because of the huge inheritance taxes that need to be paid in the UK. As much as I love visiting National Trust properties I do like historic homes that are still lived in by the families are linked to those homes. I visited Holkham Hall in Norfolk this past northern summer and that belongs to the Earls of Leicester, and the rooms you see there are still used by the family. Looking into the guest bedrooms I could see bottles of water on the bedside cabinets, the guides said the rooms are used by the family when they have guests and each room has its own ensuite bathroom. It's nice that these places are lived in and not just museum pieces.

I'm hoping to get a new (used) drone in the next couple of months and hope it does a little better job with the videography. As I watch this I notice how "blown out" the castle looks. Wow, that was very informative and watchable. I didn't realise Arundel Castle was so impressive. It's amazing that they are a Roman Catholic family and yet so close to Charles and the Royal Family. A church divided into a Catholic section and an Anglican section, that's unheard of. The Anglican part struck me as perhaps looking High Anglican and so not too different from the Catholic bit! The scale and grandeur of the castle are astonishing and yet it is a family home. I know of other stately homes still owned by the family that are not so accessible or visitor-friendly. It's a bit far to go for a day trip, so I'll make do with your report, it's the next best thing to being there!

I was thinking the same thing! To be RC and be the "right hand man" doing all the planning for the coronation and funeral... which are very much Anglican events... it's interesting, innit?! It's so fascinating to visit castles like Alnwick and Bamburgh and Arundel which are still family homes (for the family who has lived there for centuries!)... they are all very grand, but I loved how Arundel seemed the most "accessible" of them all. If you find yourself in Sussex one of these years, hopefully you can stop in for a visit! Cheers for watching! Dara

It's even more extraordinary when you consider that the Dukes of Norfolk are the hereditary Earls Marshal of England, so this association has endured for centuries despite all the various religious disturbances in our history.

The Dukes of Norfolk have traditionally been the ones to organise royal funerals and coronations, the current Duke's father was involved in the planning of QEII's funeral but died long before her! A few months before Charles' coronation the current Duke was in traffic court as he was caught speeding too many times, he argued that he couldn't lose his licence as he had a coronation to organise!

The oddest thing about such a beautiful castle is it has been owned by the Dukes of Norfolk. Quite some way from their home turf. Dukes do seem to get around a bit though.

What a tour, what a castle! :o just AMAZING. We live maybe.. 40 minutes from Arundel and still haven't visited..but the amount of times we've driven through and like you mentioned, the town centre is so pretty and the visual of the castle is just so majestic. It was wonderful listening to your narrations, the host that spoke to you and also getting to see a glimpse of the grandeur inside the rooms, when we visit, i'll be spending my time in that library, what a gorgeous place! Absolutely loved your drone shots Ian and loved the kitchen garden, very beautiful. Thank you so much for another amazing video!

@@Nick_r no we didn't make it to Pevensey but it does look like a worthwhile place to visit. We mostly stayed away from the coast. Sadly the turrets and towers are a fake Victorian pastiche, which is why you don't see them on other UK castles. But it is lovely and a nice place to visit. I was there in December for my 4th visit. That hill from the town to the cathedral is quite a climb.
@ians3586

You make a good point. The exterior is an inferior imitation of medieval architecture (though better than anything that would have been done today) and is a bit jarring next to the original structure. Despite this I'm in awe of the place and love the Victorian interiors, grounds, and the appearance of the castle from a distance.

Wow! So beautiful. I lived in Sussex for 5 years and know the town and have obviously seen the castle from afar from below but never been inside. I'm usually too tight to pay the entrance fee! I lived in Woodstock too but have never been inside Blenheim Palace for the same reason. 😂 There's a famous Larkin poem called "An Arundel tomb" (I think) about one of the tombs in the old cathedral.

The Vicar of Bray is about a clergyman who changed religions to suit whoever was in power at the time. If there was a protestant king, he was protestant, but if a catholic came to power he swapped. 😁Here's a short snippet. 🎵1. In good King Charles' golden time, when loyalty no harm meant, A zealous high churchman was I, and so I gained preferment. To teach my flock, I never missed: Kings are by God appointed And damned are those who dare resist or touch the Lord's anointed. (Chorus): And this be law, that I'll maintain until my dying day, sir That whatsoever king may reign, Still I'll be the Vicar of Bray, sir. 4. When Royal Anne became our queen, the Church of England's glory, Another face of things was seen, and I became a Tory. Occasional conformists base; I blamed their moderation; And thought the Church in danger was from such prevarication..
