When Melvin described Carol's character so accurately its when you realize these 2 are soulmates.

It's a love of respect, understanding, trust and acceptance. A bond formed from both seeing each other past pretenses and vulnerabilities. When you find someone who makes you feel free, makes you feel safe, makes life feel easy and effortless... it's just one of the many treasures life has for us. Classic ending to a classic movie.

The VERY last 10 seconds, I was waiting for that "last step," where Jack steps on a sidewalk crack holding the door for his woman and a stranger, and he noticed that stopped being OCD for just that one moment. The scene where both characters conclude their kiss by almost ignoring and walking past the bakery after Melvin finally let's go of his obsession and steps onto the bricks is so suggestive and epic. Melvin is on the clean un-broken concrete while she is walking on the complicated and numerous bricks. So suggestive of the feminine and the masculine energy flowing throughout the scene, so natural and instinctive. The bakery turns on the lights and our couple remember what silly contrived excuse they made for strolling together so awkwardly at such an un-godly hour. Both stray from their individual paths and walk hand in hand together unconcerned over which steps they take, or on what ground. Mevin holds the door; realizes he has one foot squarely on familiar solid ground and the other in chaos and un-certainty, yet he chooses to follow Helen Hunt's character into whatever future awaits them both. This movie has always left me wanting more.. Hollywood at its finest.

Very well stated and observed. The entire movie examines the inherent and wonderful differences between women and men (can we even say this in 2023?). When Melvin corrects her son about saying hello, when he chastises Carol for being emotional when he is holding it together. How he does to his therapist and just screams "HELP!" as many men do to their friends/inner circle when they feel overwhelmed and emotional trying to protect the woman in their life. Just a wonderfully crafted story. When Carol cannot contain her emotion with Harold Ramis's MD character. The "you make me want to be a better man" harkening back to the stereotypical behind every great man is a great woman. Just a great study of the human experience masterfully written and acted out. Well done all around.

A great story and movie. As an actor I think Jack Nickolson is one of the best ever but he is 26 years older than Helen Hunt and looks it in the movie. I know it's "just a movie" but I believe in real life the age difference would be too much for these charters, especially with his condition. They made it work and it's a great movie.

Whether it’s implicitly intentional here I cannot say, but the scene seems to express the general concept that true love requires true engagement; surrendering our compulsive auto-pilot mechanisms for the effort and reward of conscientiousness. That wake up call we always return to and the nightmare we are always waking from(if we’re lucky)… as well as a reminder that’s it’s never too late to right the ship. Love is not merely habit. You cannot really care without awareness… if we’re lucky it doesn’t even feel like work; the keeping each other cognizant. That’s about as good as it gets.

It's a good movie for twenty-something young adults to see, because it captures the point you've made. As good as this final scene is, I'm not convinced that Carol is going to be able to talk herself into a relationship with Melvin.
@blueblur23293 ай бұрын
@@vivianpowell1732 I can easily see it happen because she doesn't have any better prospects. She's a single mom with a sick kid that requires all of her attention and gets in the way of her having a life outside of work. Yeah Melvin is extremely flawed but there is no denying that he has positively impacted her life and without him it would go back to being crappy again. The relationship has a shot of working out because she needs Melvin every bit as much as he needs her.
