I've considered buying used Corvettes, but once I see they were once titled in NJ around the time of Hurricane Sandy and I gave them a hard pass. Will be doing the same for cars that were titled in Florida in 2022.

@@XX-166 His point is you can't use rusty rotors as a basis to determine flood damage. If you let a car sit long enough, the rotors will rust because most are made of cast iron.

I met a guy in a car wash who had a trailer with two flood damaged vehicles. For a living, he drove to areas that had experienced flash flooding, and be bought non-running flood damaged cars for cash and loaded them on his trailer. He did this while the cars were still wet, then he took them to the car wash, pulled the interiors out, and washed the cars inside and out, engine compartment, trunk space, everything. Then he dried the cars out and put them back together. He told me he avoided salt water damaged cars, but he said he got most of his purchases cleaned up, dried out, and running and then sold for a huge profit at the cost of a small cash investment, the transportation expenses, and 10 hours or less of labor for each vehicle. The cars he could not get running/sold he parted out and still made a little.

Thousands of people across the country make this their business. Many, if not most of these cars can be brought back to operating condition. You might not want to own one, but there are many who will take the chance on a salvage title to get the car they want for half the price.

The real issue is these cars sitting like this, if steps were taken with these cars immediately after IAN, more would be repairable, but not after they've been sitting in a hot field for over a month without someone as so much as rolling the windows down. Point out where I stated, as a fact, that most chose to ride out the storm so they lost their cars. I do know that most people interviewed, that didn't evacuate from the coast, chose to stay because they didn't pay attention to the reports and thought they could ride it out. Those people shouldn't be allowed to claim it on their insurance because that's their own fault and it drives up responsible people's rates.

If a car is flooded in any way it's just a total loss because literally everything from the antenna to the valve stems are electronic. The key is electric. That's why I refuse to own a vehicle that has an massive volume of computer crap. One can't help from owning a vehicle that has a computer in it, but in the last fifteen years they've (the manufacturers) have made it a priority to get as much computer chips and sensors in their products as possible. I've been saying for the last few years that the vehicles on the market today are way over engineered and unreliable and therefore not worth the money for the price you pay for them.

Let the dealer and the manufacture deal with the expense of the complex computer system. You have the benefits of getting a loner and you can buy out at the end of leasing or trade up. For those who like to and can afford a new car every few years, leasing is a good idea, especially with the complex computer system.
