I don't have Netflix so I wasn't paying much attention to the hype around Squid Games. Then I watched the trailer just now and was like "This feels familiar..." Down to the classical music in the trailer. It's quite funny how people are now losing their minds so much (though I am sure it must be a technically accomplished show as well). XD

I can definitely see the similarity in a couple of scenes from the first episode of the squid game. Regardless of the similarities, I think both do an excellent job at striking fear and shock in the audience.

The concept of squid game was developed way back in 2008, got rejected by 10 production houses. Then finally less than 3 years ago, netflix picked it.

I’d say Squid Game is more influenced by Battle Royale, because it’s somewhat similar concepts in some aspects just different in its own rite.

Just watched this yesterday. Absolutely insane! Kept me on the edge of my seat for two hours straight! I highly recommend it, but at this point, you'll need a Region 3 DVD player to watch. I hope there will be a US release soon.

+isaac cruz I'd love to read it, but haven't had the funds to check it out yet. If the difference between the film and manga are anything like the differences found in Takashi Miike's adaptation of "Ichi the Killer" then I'm sure this is probably substantially different from the manga in many ways.

this is what squid game wished it could be. lets be real this movie isnt that good, but it does the "child game but lethal" premise so much better than squid game, the characters are cliche but at least they are smart and proactive and dont just randomly get through the tests by sheer luck at the last second.

@@holden6104 we're talking about ATGW and SG here, keep it between the two. One has had more time and a plethora of "influences" and was also made into a series. The other was begging to be an anime, but got turned into a movie instead. But i do agree, Japan does not cater to a wider audience. But you can't belittle the execution of the other since it came first. Its like saying that Neil Tyson had better execution of a space show than Carl Sagan, which is BS considering that Carl Sagan was the first space science show host who was actually a scientist. I can't cite other examples, the one on top of my head is Chris Bumstead for some odd reason.

There is a « second part » of the manga, which explains what happens to students who skipped class that day. They don’t get killed, they are forced to participate in another series of games, which in my opinion are way scarier 😭

@Jenlisa제니와 리사 (Blink) I meant the daruma game from beginning. Both daruma game and 무궁화꽃이 피었습니다(red light green light whatever) have same rule. I didn't mean that whole squidgame ripped off from this original manga but using the same first game is obvious that director got idea from here.

I didn't say it's ripped off anything. Using same game in same way is just not creative and I'm talking about only first game not the whole show LOL

THIS FINALLY MAKE SENSE!!! In the first game, Shun and his brother were in the same classroom with the red Daruma (red daruma means Luck and good fortune). The other students were not in the same class with Shun and his brother. They must it have the other colored daruma which are not luck and fortune. At the end of the game, they all ate their ice cream. Each Popsicle sticks have a writing, you live or you die. Those Marry is his dolls said that each student must have, intelligence, endurance, imagination, and luck. Each and every student of five, who survived, all have these abilities, except three. They never had the red Daruma, which means they die of no luck in the first place. MAKES SENSE RIGHT!

I saw this movie about a month ago because it was on a list of "Must-see Japanese Horror Movies" and loved it. I must admit at first I thought "What the hell is this?" But as I kept watching, it became more compelling and intriguing. It's a surreal, weird, and wild ride, but one worth taking. Also another Japanese movie to watch within the same vein as this one is TAG from 2015. That movie was insane!

KissAsian is kinda problematic because of a lot of pop up ads but if you have something on your computer to combat them or if you just clear them all out whenever they pop up, you should be able to watch the movie. They both have English subs too. Let me know how you like it after you have watched it. I'm curious to know what you thought about it.

@@iprochan5701 That's something that the director said because in Korea they are accusing him to plagiarize Japan Lol Knetz even said that if it were the other way arround (Japan copying Korea) that would be "more scandalous" (bc Koreans will attack Japan). It's obvious that the director invented that excuse to protect himself from the accusations of plagiarism, but he has not shown evidence to prove what he said lol
