Thank you for this short but important episode! Despite its very long history, unfortunately today there is still a lack of education about the possible uses of asbestos in many parts of the world. Whether in floors, screeds and leveling compounds, electrical installations, in tile adhesives and joint compounds, the mastic of windows and doors, as well as in many other materials in and around the house - there are countless possible areas of application of asbestos that surprise even experts again and again. Particularly in the case of renovation and refurbishment work, the following therefore applies: Exercise the greatest caution and play it safe! Even a small material sample is sufficient to determine in a professional test procedure whether a suspicious material contains asbestos. If the commissioned analysis confirms the suspicion of asbestos, have any work on it carried out exclusively by service providers with the necessary certificate of competence. This is the only way you can be sure that there will be no accidental contamination of your living space, clothing or workshops with asbestos fibers. Stay healthy!

As long as your not causing fibers of asbestos to float in the air your fine. But if you drill or or drive nails into the tiles you could be releasing fibers. You could use heavy duty construction glue to hold the base of the wall to the floor.

That's a huge help. I have brown 9x9 tiles in my bedroom under the carpet, they look like they are brand new. I have 1x1 ceiling tiles that seem to be constructed with a light brown fiber similar to the color of pressed wood. How do I determine if my ceiling tiles are asbestos. The reason I ask is that I would rather it be drywall, which is what is underneath. It might be best to drywall over the top of the ceiling tiles. What are your thoughts?

Thanks Colin! Actually very helpful. I just bought a house from 1963 and definitely have some 9 x 9 tiles in the basement. This was underneath two layers of rug. I have removed the rug I have a little bit of padding to get up because it’s now stuck so I’m gonna scrape it very carefully using a respirator and then I plan to use the self leveling concrete to encapsulate it and maybe put some tile or vinyl flooring over that. Thanks for the info I feel more confident going into this project.

Hi Luba, any asbestos floor tiles are potentially releasing fibers into the air if they crack or are otherwise damaged.

Hi Jim! About a year ago we were putting in new flooring in our kitchen, and saw there was asbestos tileing underneath our old floor when we ripped it out. We didn't know it was asbestos and tried ripping out a tile and the tile broke. This is when we realized that it was asbestos tiles and we decided to just put the new laminate wood flooring over the tiles to encapsulate it. That one tile was the only tile that we broke apart and we immediately discarded the rest of the tile. Does the new flooring we layed over keep the us safe from the asbestos dust, or does it still let dust come out and become airborne?
@collinruppert48752 жыл бұрын
There really should not be too much asbestos dust created from breaking the tiles since these types of tiles are a non-friable material. That means that they need to be drilled or cut in order to create dust.

I have a question. I have a house from 1954. I found out that I have radon, so I got it mitigated. Though, when they tested the flow they pulled the carpet back drilled through the tile before I could mention anything. What do I do to ensure this room is safe? It's where my workout bike is, but now I'm not sure I want to ride in there. I'm not trying to remove the tile. But what do I do since the guy just drilled right through it? He placed the carpet back and filled the whole so that is covered, but I worry about whatever dust he made and spread out from doing that.

Hi Jim, We definitely know that there are asbestos floor tiles under our carpeting throughout our house. However, we'd like to update and take all that carpeting out and put down some kind new flooring. Won't those tiles come up upon pulling carpeting out from the edges? Do those tiles need to come out in order to put new flooring in....and if so...won't that just make it higher than the other flooring areas like in the kitchen and bathrooms? thanks, Jim. I'm grateful for any advice. 😊
@collinruppert48752 жыл бұрын
It depends on what type of flooring you are going to put back down after you remove the carpets and wat the flooring specialist suggests. Some flooring material can be laid over other floors without any issues, for some its better to remove any old flooring layers.

I took a sledge hammer to a concrete bathroom floor that possibly had asbestos tiles on it. The tiles were already removed but I am worried about residue from the tiles on the concrete. I would have created plenty of dust and was on my hands and knees breaking pieces away and installing plumbing pipes. What are the chances there was asbestos on the concrete? Does the glue holding the tiles to the floor contain asbestos? I'll be getting samples tested.

I have these tiles in our 1950 ranch home, in my 3 season porch, which is a damp environment due to some neglected mx issues from prior owner. We are working on cleaning them up, which brings me to my question. The tiles are cracking here and there along the wall edge, into pieces which are about two inches, The tiles appear to have been installed directly onto to concrete. Can I cover them with a self leveling compound such as concrete? 90% of them are secure to the floor.
@JimRuppert3 жыл бұрын
Hi Angela, covering the floor tiles with cement is considered encapsulation. As long as it can be done without disturbing the tiles (which can release the fibers) applying a layer of concrete thick enough to not crack should be acceptable. We recommend getting an asbestos professional to assess and evaluate what you've got prior to taking any action.

I wanted to continue the hardwood floor in the common areas to my bedrooms where I have old carpet. The carpet has already been ripped out (last week) and it looks like asbestos tile underneath. Looks like the wood installed in 2010 was done after removing the same tile. I suspect with total disregard for asbestos (I had to move out for 5 days). So now we have been exposed twice (after reading your comments about exposure from ripping out carpet). One of the tiles has received damage from water (bathroom on other side of wall). Totally dry now. The tile is 1/2 intact but otherwise a few pieces 2x2 inches. Maybe the carpet installer (decades ago) removed other pieces. I have covered up with plastic for now and sent off 2 pieces (one with glue)for asbestos testing. I’m so concerned about my exposure. Want to put a floating wood floor in but need to repair that one tile. Also may need to level, but have not measured that yet. Is it worth getting a remediation company if the tile carefully removed and replaced with a VCT tile? Am I being exposed every day since carpet removed. I’m pretty upset right now.
@mitchell3331002 жыл бұрын
I really wouldn't be too concerned about exposure. Remember that the asbestos fibers that are potentially in the tile are not easily released. They tile has to be drilled or cut. Just breaking the tile has a very low chance of releasing a significant amount of fibers.

@JimRuppert2 жыл бұрын
Hi John, I doubt it will affect value of the home unless it becomes a real buyers market. You may want to talk to your real estate agent about it. Very often, people don't even realize that there is asbestos underneath the carpet. I hope this helps, Jim

@JimRuppert4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can cover the asbestos floor tiles with anything you would like. In a basement, it's a good thing to install waterproof materials because basements are usually humid or moist or wet locations. These days they make beautiful ceramic tiles that look like wood yet can withstand humidity moisture and water. But the point is yes you can cover tiles. I hope this helps, Jim Ruppert

@collinruppert48752 жыл бұрын
yes some floor coverings can be used to encapsulate the tiles.
@collinruppert48754 ай бұрын
It is possible for the glue or mastic that was used for the tiles to contain asbestos. The tiles themselves would not leave a residue so I think you can rule that out. The dust you could see was from the concrete, not the asbestos. With that being said, you really shouldn't be breathing in concrete dust either. You should always use proper respiratory protection when performing demolition of any material that might create dust.

I have asbestos tile it’s coming up and many have broken. I cut some stick on vinyl tiles smaller to fill in the gaps were the older tile is gone. How can I get a company to put a floor over it to encapsulate it? Home Depot’s came out and said they won’t lay anything because you would need to staple or nail into it? One side of my basement the tiles are in good shape but covered in a carpeting with padding. The carpeting is trashed now and needs to be replaced? I’m worried a company is going to refuse to replace it because of the asbestos tiling? I guess they have to at least staple to the edging pieces on the floor? A remediation company wanted to charge me 6,000 dollars to take it out.
@JimRuppert3 жыл бұрын
Hi LLC, I wish I had a better answer for you. But when the tiles are cracked/broken I don't think you'll find any responsible contractor try to encapsulate them because they will continue to crack as you walk on them. I recommend that you contact an asbestos removal company. It may not be as expensive as you are envisioning.

Just to be clear, asbestos was and is still used in floor tile and not just 9 X 9. Although the USA no longer makes asbestos flooring, it could still make it in to the retailers from other countries like Canada, Russia, etc. The only way to know for sure is laboratory analysis.

Hi Collin, I'm a musician but life went a bit cruel on me and I had to change my profession for labouring. As English isn't my first language, I misunderstood the task from my manager. When he asked me to take the "floors" off, he asked me to take the panels that were in one bathroom, what I did however was taking of vinyl tiles like these on your video from the other one. When I was told I had to leave them because they may contain asbestos I got into panic and can't stop thinking of it. I need to underline that they were sticking to the floor very well and I wasn't able to take them off in one piece. Do you think is there a high possibility that I got exposed for its fibres? Thanks
@collinruppert48752 жыл бұрын
What I can tell you is that these tiles are a non-friable type of asbestos containing material which means that you can't really release fibers from this material unless it is drilled, cut or pulverized. As such you were probably not exposed to too many fibers. But you should really check with a physician if you want more clarification on the health impacts of potential exposure.

Hi Ryan, sorry for the delay in responding. The problem with carpet is what happens when it gets removed. It would be releasing a lot of fiber more than likely. If you decide to cover it, it should be covered with a permanent material. To be safe, we recommend getting an asbestos professional to evaluate which of God and give you specific advice.
