*cries in spice and wolf as well* I hope to the holy anime studios that be that this doesn't become another spice in wolf in terms of its run. They're very similar in terms of both of them being based off of a long running book, I believe ascendance of a bookworm is 20 vol in and They both have medieval economics. I just hope it doesn't follow in spice and wolfs footsteps and dies after 3 seasons.

@@runakovacs4759 uh no. It takes a lot of digging to find good japanese animation these days. anime as an industry has been ruined by fanboys. they just give us the same crap i.e. annoying fanservice , harems, screaming little boys as main characters, boring story and total lack of plot and character development Etc. This is one of the rare gems in anime right now . No fanservice . A female MC who is competent but clearly flawed. Serious topics like being poor , struggling with an incurable illness, dealing with classism, corrupt religious leaders and nobility, even touches on issues like pedophilia and rape (though the more innocent viewers might not notice it, which is good cause kids might be watching)

the manga is so fucking bittersweet i love it and hate it at the same time. every scrap of good you get comes with an equal amount of bad. myne finds a chance to make books but she cant do it alone. she finds the best resource to make paper with but it destroys the natural resources around it in order to make it. she gets a job that will help her but her disease is growing and shes forced to make a choice that could result in her both never achieving her dream or ever even seeing her new family shes come to love again. its so good and every single chapter im just praying that this girl doesnt succumb to the devouring or whatever its actually called i just want her to succeed and get that book and live her life. god this manga is so good.

the reason why I love this is because it feels like an adventure and the characters actively develop. the growth of the story is amazing. it has great "realism," it has a great protagonist vs society where society is just an "anti-hero" and not a "villian." I would purpose the alternate names of "peasant simulator," harry potter nerd goes on an adventure, and OP book dork isn't Mary sue. it feels natural because the word builds slowly as the character literally matures, it has a very "closed off" feeling like there is a lot of wonderment in the world and an unknown created by the lack of information that makes this fantastical.

@maximeteppe7627 3 жыл бұрын
while I like the story, I think I could nitpick a good while about things that could be more immersive or consistent, but it's such a relaxing and heartwarming watch overall! However, for the sake of my nerdiness: Wooden buildings that high seem pretty much impossible. Rome had basically concrete building 5/6 levels high, but most medieval cities had mostly individual homes of stone, dirt and brick. If there were particularly tall and robust trees in the nearby forest though, that could have been a clever wrinkle. mostly I lament the lack of visual variety and color, materials and shapes in the downtown area. but the amount of detail that goes in background art is also an issue of budget. Overall the show has an 17th century aesthetic (architecture and clothing), a time when printing presses were around. one can imagine a world evolving tech differently, especially is there's magic around, so more of a remark than anything else. You can be damn sure that working class people in a scarce society aren't going to throw anything away if they can help it. reusing cooking water isn't going to be revolutionary to them, unless there is a cultural taboo around it... or if local vegetables can leave toxic elements in said water. Or if the water itelf is prone to being contaminated-pretty likely in a town without proper sewage and no running water. If people don't have access to washing water and shampoo, they're gonna protect their hair with hats and clothes. The mother does it, you'd expect pretty much everyone else to do the same. Personal hygiene products wee relatively simple to make and were available in almost all cultures, so it's unlikely that Myne would have come up with shampoo first. However she might have a better framework to create different flavors and find substitute ingredients. And most hygiene issues would come from lack of access to clean water and/or cultural stigma - for instance, during the renaissance and for centuries after, people in europe thought that bathing brought illnesses and vermin, but Gauls and other antique European cultures had a pretty good sense of hygiene.
@fuge74
@fuge74 3 жыл бұрын
@@maximeteppe7627 there are a lot of fantastical elements, but you can make a wood structure up to about five stories, in fact the limit of structures was 10 stories until the use of steel. the reason for 2-3 story buildings was ease of use. and the ability to expand, but they did get taller and more concentrated as time went on. a lot of your complaints are actually explained via the use of magical plants and magical taboo. you also seem to have a warped perspective of how medieval people operated. but basically the answer to the question is yes they do and so did medieval societies.

bear in mind that she becomes a concubine after the coming of age ceremony, so it's after she turns 15-16. It's an arranged marriage, sure, which wasn't rare for children in the medieval period, but the age at which they're allowed to marry/ considered adult is actually fairly higher than what it was in our own medieval period, so it's not that bad. Furthermore, a year over there has more days (a bit above 400 IIRC), which means that the marriable age is actually very, very close of 18 in term of how many days the peoples have lived already.

Thank you for this recommendation. I couldn't really get through Dr Stone (got to about chapter 60) because it felt like an amazing premise that got Shonened into silliness. This is so heartfelt, earnest and subtle in how she uses her modern knowledge. I'm absolutely loving this take on the "nerd gets sent back in time" subgenre. Also, like you mentioned briefly, I love that her family isn't just like "oh, well I guess our daughter is just a crazy genius, how bout that." That, and her transition to the new world are handled really well.

The anime is great but The light novel is wayyyy better. One of the best light novel I have read in a long time. The anime is moving at a neck breaking pace. I think it will go past the 130+ chapter in the ln. it skip many fun and touching moments in the LN. Give it a try, you might like it too

So I just binged all the available episodes last night, and if I had thought your praise was probably at least a bit of an overestimation, then boy did I think wrong. I adored every second of it! And I was particularly floored when crochet was depicted correctly. Most shows don't even know the difference between crochet and knitting, let alone how to draw actual techniques. I'm also considering cosplaying as Main, since I would have fun making the pieces and can mix them into my own wardrobe. I will definitely be using that discount code you gave us - thank you for that, by the way!

When the show first started I was thinking that someone needs to make a meme of: "Don't judge a book by it's cover and don't judge a person by their name." Then have a pic of Myne from Shield Hero next to a of Myne from Bookworm. (With name tags)

I love Bookworm!! Main is adorable, especially when we get those cute little thoughts animations and I just love how real all the characters feel. The world just draws me in and I appreciate that the show doesn't just wave away the fact that life as a peasant in the medieval era wasn't as grungy as we tend to think it was, but that it also wasn't the cleanest either. Private bathrooms did not exist back then and it's addressed without going so far into it that it's obnoxious. I'm so glad that it exists, as someone who both loves books and desperately craves more good quality fantasy content in anime.

As so.eone who plans on becoming a novelist, this anime really intrigues me - it seems like an excellent case study of building a believable fantasy world, and how eastern storytellers use settings and scenarios for the sake of delivering character-driven stories. Anime and manga have had an enormous influence on me and my taste, and I want to show my respect by representing that influence properly in my writing rather than merely grafting eastern tropes onto my work for the sake of it.

Ahh, the struggles of the peasantry and a realistic depiction of a fantasy european isekai without having to rely on tits, blood, gore, action, and magic was one of the reasons why I loved this series. Of course this changes later on, but regardless it's still a great series. It took the series 6 years since the first book was published to get an anime. I hope that its good enough to continue to the end. Because shit gets heart breaking.
