What is a human being? What happens when we die? Why do we visit cemeteries? And why do Catholics bury the dead instead of scattering their ashes?
Today, Fr. Mike connects the dignity of the human person to the dignity of the body in death-and beyond.

My wife and I will be cremated, and our ashes will be in a columbarium in a military cemetery. As Catholics, we consider that ground as consecrated. While I know that no one will visit our "graves", we will still be remembered. And as to scattering, I wouldn't do it, but in my heart I know that God can resurrect us regardless of what happened to our mortal bodies. Those souls lost at sea, those disintegrated by explosion, those of whom no trace can be found will still be raised up by the glory of God, for Whom nothing is impossible.

Thank you for your service. Your military *pride* preceives your motive. The difference is, you are doing it on puopse. Not an accident. That you will be held accountable for. Military ground is not consecrated ground. Dont fool yourself. You belong resting in full body, in a Catholic cemetery. In your finale you have one option... to do God's Will, or Satan's free will.

Why will you be cremated? Our bodies are Temples of the Holy Ghost. Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Orders, Matrimony, Holy Eucharist, Extreme Unction all have their indelible mark on your body to the very marrow of your bones. Cremation is a Masonic practice. Whatever happens to bodies by happenstance isn't usual, and yes God will bring us back to wholeness at the Resurrection, but why would you do that to a body which has died a natural death?

If she was a believer in Christ , she is at home in the heavenly realm with Jesus Eph 2:6 If she was a believer in Christ she does not need your prayers and if she was unrepentant it is sadly too late to pray for her. My best friend passed away and was buried . On the last day of Hospice were the last words I said to her. Knowing she loved the Lord and had led an exemplary life in Christ there is no reason for me to pray to or talk to her.

Acts 17:11 is relevant for today and the roman Catholic church does not want you to read God's written word for yourself . In the entire new testament no one prays to the dead for anything , in all 73 books in the bible no one prays to anyone but God! My parents and one brother are buried about a mile from where I USED TO LIVE. Consequently, since my dad died suddenly in 1989 and my mom in 2008, I was able to visit them often. I would place a rose on mom’s grave on her birthday and Mothers Day. Dad was a WWII Vet and his grave always had a flag….flash forward to 2014….my wife and I relocated a thousand miles away. One of the most difficult things about that move is that I no longer can visit the folks. I get home when I can and the first stop I make is at their graves. My grandma taught me to make the Sign of the Cross when I pass a cemetery. I hope someone does that when they pass my parent’s resting place.

When he holds up the CCC, instead of God's word the bible, you know that he is not speaking the truth of the scriptures . Still wanna believe what he says then compare what is taught with the scriptures that Jesus used . Acts 17:11 Paul teaches something and what do the listeners do? That example is for us as well.

unscriptural tradition and does no good for the dead in the grave, as they do not and can not hear you. Luke 16:19-31 The Rich Man and Lazarus 19 “There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. 20 And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21 who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side.6 The rich man also died and was buried, 23 and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. 24 And he called out, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’ 27 And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house- 28 for I have five brothers-so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ 29 But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; ret them hear them.’ 30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31 He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’ ” Jesus is telling this story to you , will you hear Him?

There is only ONE Gospel: The Gospel of Reconciliation. All other gospels are accursed. Jesus Christ came into THEIR kingdom to reconcile fallen angels unto Himself. We are the fallen angels kept in DNA chains of darkness. If you do not confess being a fallen angel in Lucifer's kingdom, then you are an unbeliever. Unbeliever = those that claim to be made in the image of God.

So, so, expensive to bury a loved one. I don't want to be a burden to no one financially. I am poor and not ashamed to mention it. I got no money for a one day funeral. I will do with my body with how much I can afford, and that is cremation and no burial service. I believe in God. I love God. I know he loves me no matter how I leave this Earth. Cremating my mother (her wishes as a Roman Catholic, despite what this guy claims AND nobody on the church staff made any fuss whatsoever) cost less than $3000, including the cost of cremation, the funeral service, the wake, and the 3D printed acorns that let us place some of her ashes with her parents, grandparents, two of her brothers, several aunts and her beloved pups (pups are actually buried in the back yard).

I grew up visiting the cemetery weekly with my Nan. We would clean my grandads gravestone, place flowers and sit for a while listening to the birds chirp. Afterwards we’d go for tea and scones. My grandad died of cancer when I was 5, so I don’t have many strong memories that weren’t him lying emaciated in a hospital bed. The weekly visits helped me bond with my grandad after his death on a new level, and make up some of my favorite memories. As an adult I absolutely love cemeteries. They are the most peaceful place to be as far as I’m concerned.

I am old enough to remember when cremation was considered a sin. Then I was told that the Church approved it because especially in Europe, there wasn't enough land. I know in New Orleans; people are buried above ground in cemeteries and I understand that after a certain amount of time, their remains are pushed to the back of the crypt and other bodies placed in it. I don't understand how Church laws are so flexible. I remember when a marriage couldn't be annulled if it had been "consummated". Then, I was told that if the person you marry is not the person you thought they would be, you qualified for an annulment! In this scenario, almost everyone I know would qualify for an annulment but my observation is that it usually a man who wants to dump his 1st wife and marry a much younger woman with whom he can have more children. And the Church apparently is okay with that. How times have changed.
@suzannejane1035
@suzannejane1035 Жыл бұрын
@@joanschilleci7564 It's utterly untrue that you can have an annulment because the person you married wasn't the person you thought they were. Whoever told you that is wrong. There are set rules for an annulment, I am going through one at the moment and my brother who is a priest is advising me. We have the paperwork and it has to go to a canon law tribunal which then decides if the reasons stipulated in the Catholic church for the annulment have been met. The church is not 'ok' with dumping your spouse for nothing.

Your cousin isn't the cremated body. He left when he died. If you believe in heaven, the only concern you should have is seeing him when you get there. That's what should really matter to you. Your dead body will be completely unaware if part of your cousin is in there with you or not. Maybe she's scattering him in places that had meaning for him. That's what I did with my parents. They both asked to be spread in the back yard, so part of them are there, and the rest of them ended up in Michigan where they met. I think they would have liked that had I ever brought it up to them. I think they just didn't want anyone to be troubled by disposing of them. It wasn't a problem. I wanted to visit there eventually, anyway. I feel that was a honor to them to "spread their ashes". They were put in places that had meaning in their lives.

Her ashes were interred at a VA cemetery out in Long Island along with my father’s body in his grave. I was sorely tempted to scatter her ashes off Harvey's Beach, Northport, also in Suffolk County on the Long Island Sound. She LOVED this beach back in the ‘30s when she was a kid; she was a very good looking little girl and have a particular picture I have of Mom along with my Aunts and Grandmother -all taken on Harvey’s Beach, 1936. Long story short, I did not, because of the Church’s teaching, but I'm not going to lie-i wanted to. Thank you again.. -

Do you not know that the Creator of Heaven and Earth can do anything? Amos 5:8 "seek him that maketh the Pleiades and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night; that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth (Jehovah is his name);" Who are you looking to for eternal life? The Son of God or what man says. Here is some Good News no matter what happens at death. Romans 5:8-11 "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life; and not only so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation." Mark 1:15 “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” 🙏

Do what your heart tells you. If you're afraid to break some religious rule, to which you give a lot of weight and power, don't scatter them or your guilt will punish you. But if you truly believe that scattering ashes in a place that your mother loved truly honors her, then do that. You see, your personal beliefs must honored. Not religious beliefs. When humanity passes on, there will be no religion -- no need for it. Religions are man-made concepts that were intended to service humans with Earthly bodies by giving them guidance while they are alive in material form. Religions were spiritually inspired, but (as mankind always does) humans corrupted religion. When you still your mind and get quiet and breathe deeply ("life is in the breath") and focus on the center of your heart, there you will meet God. It's as if there is a doorway to the Divine in center of the heart. Gently place your hand over your heart and/or very lightly and slowly tap that area as you focus your attention there. You'll FEEL the presence of Spirit. For me it works instantly. God is always with us.

I am so sad hearing this. 😢 My mama passed away years ago, in a house fire. We couldn’t view her during her funeral process, only her casket. I was born at the beginning of the 70’s, the only girl of triplets, with two identical brothers. I was born last, so I was always considered and treated as the youngest. We have a sister who is 4 years older. I had little to no say in the funeral plans. I do know that my mother said if she were to die, she wanted cremation. I never liked the idea, and when she did pass away, it felt so traumatizing, all of it. Two of my siblings met with a funeral director who brought up the idea of each one of us siblings having our own urn with my mom’s ashes being split up in four urns or containers of our choice. Other unique ideas were brought up, I guess, and they decided to split up her ashes. My mother was what I describe as an angel on earth.. a Roman Catholic who had a very strong faith in God. As her children, we were blessed to have such a wonderful mother, who not only made sure we were all children of God, but truly lived Gods way. My mom and all four of us went through abuse and trauma from our chronic alcoholic father, yet, she handled things with grace, got help for us kids when we needed it, never lost faith in adversity, and the toll on her mental health. She always managed to shine this light that never dimmed in all the pain. A remarkable woman who always gave more than she ever had. I have many memories of her bringing us kids along with her, visiting the elderly who lived in the neighborhood, dropping off meals for them, clothing, and just random, thoughtful gifts. She touched anyone she met with her “light up a room smile” and caring nature. A gentle, warm soul. I could go on.. but, the gist of it, is that she served God here on earth, and I have yet to meet anyone so beautiful, kind, and God loving. The ability to find strength even when she was worn down is something to be said. In explaining the situation with her funeral plans, and how she lived her life.. I believe she is in heaven with God, regardless of the way my siblings handled her ashes.

So, we had the funeral, the cremation, his cremains were put into a nice stone urn, and stayed in our home with us for 8 years until mom died. Then we honored his wishes and they are together in the cemetery. For those 8 years, it was comforting to in a sense, have him around to talk to, even though we knew it was only his ashes and his soul was in purgatory or heaven.

I also lost my spouse to suicide 4 years ago and I have a necklace shaped like a cross with a little bit of his ashes that I wear. After hearing this I too will take that necklace over to his grave and have it buried there. It seems really difficult to do though. As you know everything is another day without your spouse and having to let go. I am sure when I take my necklace to my husband's grave it will be a very very emotional moment. May God bless you and protect you as you walk through your life. May God carry you all the times that you can't walk and just can't breathe.

Serious question- how do we reconcile this with the fact that bits and pieces of Saints' bodies are all over the world?

I was literally thinking the same thing! A question I’ve had for awhile.
@Xanaseb
@Xanaseb 2 жыл бұрын
A piece of the saint's body is treated by the Church as equally worthy of veneration as the whole. See the discourse of Vitricius of Rouen 'In Praise of the Saints'. Some Christians however do not tend to venerate relic pieces but the whole body must be there in order to do so, namely, the Ethiopian Orthodox. Cremation causes our bodies to turn into fine dust and therefore not very easy to venerate or identify. That is why I believe the Church was wrong to start permitting cremation in the 20thC, and the traditional teaching should be upheld. In conservative Catholic countries such as Poland, it was unheard of until very recently to cremate the dead. With the Covid pandemic, the state enforced cremation for a certain time, much to the horror of the people. There was no good justification for this and it goes right against traditional Catholic practice. Let's pray for a return of bodily burial!
@Xanaseb
@Xanaseb 2 жыл бұрын
@@annesmith6582 there are two questions you are posing here. Q1. Why are saints' relics worthy of veneration and a non-saint not? Q2. Why are cremated remains not worthy of veneration? A1. They are worthy to be venerated in a special way because they have been known and proven to perform miracles and answer our prayers. One can of course, and should, venerate the body of a relative or friend or honoured member of your community, etc. but that is different to the purpose of a public 'cultus' of a saint. A2. One could technically venerate ashes, just not very easily. St.Maximillian Kolbe was killed in Auschwitz. His body was cremated and scattered on the heaps of thousands of other peoples' ashes. We can't make particular veneration to his remains therefore. Only his beard survived, apparently, cut off and saved by his fellow brothers before his arrest.

This comes back to the answer to every question. We are creatures of the Father. Created to live by His will, not the whims of society or the individual. Burying the dead and praying for them is what we are told to do. Pray for the souls in purgatory, no prayer is ever wasted. If the soul has made it to Heaven our prayer will be applied to another soul. And all this in great hopes that our passed loved ones are praying for us, cuz man, we need it!

@@Lunnalee100 Amanda, there is some validity to your statement regarding “remains of others mixed in”. Because there is always going to be a distance for visiting their graves - Prayer is all I have and do daily. So other things I do to remember them is to have a Mass for them on each of their anniversaries. On Christmas day I send them a balloon from my garden with a personal message and pray they will catch it and also share it.

It is a sacred task. I pour Holy Water that I bring home from Easter Vigil on his grave each Holy Saturday night right after Mass. I also always pray for others there, visiting graves of pioneers buried there, so many families that lost children, and are now buried next to their children. I never realized until maybe a few years ago how I as a Catholic, Celebrate similar as to The Day of the Dead. We celebrate my grandma’s birthday by having her favorite meal and listening to Spanish music. When I lived in Florida, and when we visit, we visit my grandma and grandpa, my stepdad and my great uncle. It’s good to keep their memory alive with my daughter and my cousins kids. And it’s good to pray for them. When I lived closer, we would visit all the time. I will have a talk with my grandpa and grandma. Tell them what’s going on in my life. Do some prayers. And we bring Holy Water and sprinkle it around on all the graves as we pass by to visit our loved ones. I feel my loved ones presence as we pray and talk to them and visit. I think it’s good and healthy to keep that spiritual connection with our loved ones. That’s me but that’s how I feel. ♥️

Does anyone consider that most of us can't afford to pay thousands of dollars for a funeral, nor do we have loving children that would want us to have a proper burial and make sure we are taken care of as a final request. We all took care of my parents, they both wanted a funeral, and we made sure it happened, it was very important to them, but it has never been important for me and I wouldn't expect anyone I know to pitch in a few thousand to give me a proper funeral. I understand where most people plan their funeral and they have already paid for most of it, but I personally don't want to think about it until the time comes, and even then, just give the money that I would receive to animal shelters and St. Jude or Shriners for Children where it will be used for a good cause and not a funeral parlor that doesn't care about the dead, it is merely a business to them. I am a Catholic, but final rights has always bothered me. If anything, a celebration of life would be the closest thing to a funeral and that's why so many people I know have chosen that route.
