Good people go to heaven when they die, right?
Well, according to the Gospels, not exactly. Fr. Mike Schmitz points to at least four things Christ says we need for salvation:
1. Baptism (John 3)
2. The Eucharist (John 6)
3. Faith (Romans 10:9)
4. Doing the Father’s will (Matthew 25:31-46)
None of them are “be a good person”; and it’s probably better that way because, especially today, everyone has a different idea of what is good.
Christ has given us everything we need to achieve salvation.
He wants us all to be at his wedding feast, including you; but unless you do what is necessary to get to the wedding, you won’t be there.
Considering what Fr. Mike is saying, these words of Christ make much more sense:
“Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few” (Matthew 7:13-14).
Fr. Mike also quotes the Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 847. Below is the paragraph in full:
"This affirmation is not aimed at those who, through no fault of their own, do not know Christ and his Church:
Those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the Gospel of Christ or his Church, but who nevertheless seek God with a sincere heart, and, moved by grace, try in their actions to do his will as they know it through the dictates of their conscience - those too may achieve eternal salvation."
Check out Fr. Mike’s newest project, Quick Catholic Lessons with Fr. Mike (bit.ly/2PmpYzw), a feature-packed teacher’s guide designed to accompany Fr. Mike’s most popular videos, presented on a convenient DVD. Teachers, catechists, and youth ministers can supplement USCCB curriculum, prompt small-group discussion, and answer students’ questions easily and powerfully with this teacher’s guide and DVD.
Fr. Mike is also a presenter in these faith formation programs from Ascension:

@@natanaellizama6559 not heresy in the least. Christ laid down many conditions for entering the kingdom. Doesn't mean he loves less, just that part of "knowing" Our Lord is following what he teaches ... doing the Father's will, repenting from sin, being prepared for his coming, etc. He's very clear in Scripture on this. And in Scripture he never says "I do not love you" but he does offer conditions in which he will say, "I do not know you." (parable of the ten virgins, parable of the wedding feast) ... He makes us free to condition our response (our relationship) to his unconditional love.

Father Mike, I am an Evangelical Protestant but have always been captivated and grateful for teachings of The Catholic Faith. It seems to address issues my own ministers simply don't care to yalk about or don't know. My personal study, though I am sure very lacking, has surprisingly shown me Catholicism is fearless, it is afraid of no questions, nothing is left to the darkness, it always shines a light on the path ❤❤❤! Please accept my love and admiration ,even though I be of Protestant faith.

God bless you. I have lots of Protestant friends, God always points me to this verse: Mark 9:40. I always pray for unity among all Christians. Hey dude, all you must do to be saved is to repent, put your faith in jesus christ, and make him lord. This means you truly want to completely and totally turn away from sin because once your are saved christ takes your sin and it is nailed on the christ with him, however, it says that since we are now relieved of the burden of sin there is no point to go back to our sinful ways. We must follow christ in our day to day lives and read our bible to strengthen our relationship with God and draw closer to him.

God bless you. I have lots of Protestant friends, God always points me to this verse: Mark 9:40. I always pray for unity among all Christians. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teach in Paragraph 818: "All who have been justified by faith in Baptism are incorporated into Christ; they therefore have a right to be called Christians, and with good reason are accepted as brothers in the Lord by the children of the Catholic Church."

Big problem is, people look at God as another human. They think that He would think and act like us. He is not human and He does not think or act like us. His ways are much higher than ours. We cannot think that the Creator of the Universe is just like us. The whole verse is, “Enter in through the narrow gate! Because the gate is wide - and the way is broad - that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter in through it. 14“Because the gate is narrow and the way is hard pressed which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

Yes, but there is only 1 action that will make you righteous: faith in Christ. Let me tell you a secret the Catholic Church won’t tell you. The broad road that leads to destruction are those who are trying to enter heaven through their works. That is why the world thinks you can get into heaven by “being good.” Here’s what the Catholic Church doesn’t want you to know: Many Catholics & Protestants are guilty of doing the same thing. Anyone who is attempting to get into heaven by ANY MEANS other than by FAITH IN CHRIST, will not be counted righteous. So if you believe your righteousness is by faith in Christ AND baptism AND Eucharist AND good works you are not putting all of your faith in the work of Christ. You’re declaring what Christ did was not enough, but requires your help. “But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith.” - Philippians 3:7-9 93% of the world is religious. The biggest religion of all is Christianity. 57% of Christians are Catholic. Does that sound like a narrow road to you? I am NOT saying don’t get baptized, don’t take communion, don’t do anything good. What I am saying is these things DO NOT MAKE YOU RIGHTEOUS. Real faith is letting go of your works & allowing Christ alone to be your righteousness.

"faith without works is dead." James 2:26 It's undeserved kindness that God provided a way out through his son but that doesn't mean we don't have to obey. We could never do enough to deserve life by our own actions however by having accurate knowledge of God and exercising (requires action i.e. work) faith we can come under Jesus ransom. Paul was not saying "you don't have to do anything" he's saying we can't do enough to deserve life by ourselves. We need God's gift of his son. "This means everlasting life, their coming to know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ." John 17:3 Taking action to learn about God and his son means our life. It's a gift to be sure but we are still required to obey and we need to know God to know what he wants us to do. By extension what we learn needs to be accurate or it doesn't help us, we could offend him by worshipping in a way he doesn't like.

@@Henry-eh2jk Your point is unclear, are you saying James and the apostles were wrong? That under inspiration from God's holy spirit they wrote down incorrect information? False information that God had preserved for two thousand years to benefit us? Would you deny plain text that is in the Bible to excuse yourself of having to DO anything to qualify for God's promises? "All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness" 2 Timothy 3:16 That includes the two times James said plainly "faith without works is dead". Listen to Jesus himself about the sheep and the goats. He lays out many physical things that we need to do to qualify for salvation. Do you also not believe Jesus words? Not if it's a different Christ - if you worship idols and Mary and throw Jesus in there too - you don't know Jesus, He's the way - and the ONLY way. If he's not, then it's a different Jesus.

@@kristophstjames4143 Kris, evidently someone has told you we worship idols, we do not. Do you have a picture of your loved one? By looking at it, do you worship it? The statues put a picture of the person we are praying to in our minds and help us focus. Catholics venerate Mary because she is Jesus's Mom, He loved her and gave her special graces which we appreciate and ask (pray) to her for help. She caused Jesus' first miracle, all she had to say was "Listen to Him". That's all she has ever said, and we ask her to go to her son, and help us. She has special ability, and the prayers of a righteous person have special powers with God. You should call into Catholic Answers Live in your area on radio or online, they explain this beautifully and charitably, and they were mostly all Protestants until they researched Church history and studied what Catholicism teaches.

@@joepickett7084 I'm sorry Joe, but you just negated your response when you said a statue puts a picture of the one you are praying TO (emphasis added) ... That is the very definition of idol worship - praying to one other than the triune God. I trust that is not really what you meant to say. One other point, any religion that puts a 'formula' to salvation is not the same as the traditional mainline protestant denominations. Fortunately, this very good Catholic apologist gave the Churches' true position when he said the "Bible and the Church" teaches. It seems the Catholic Church teaches works man must do for salvation (baptism, Eucharist, etc.) The Bible doesn't teach this - it teaches faith alone. That is the difference between Catholicism and Protestantism. Just so you know, there is no doubt in my mind that I will get to discuss this, and many other points of diverging doctrines, with a multitude of born-again Catholics when I am called home by my Savior and join them in Heaven. God bless.

Get in to a bible based church and attend regularly in order to have fellowship with other believers and get baptised in order to make a public confession of ur faith just like Christ was baptised by his cousin John the Baptist in the Jordan river!! A true relationship entails communication that goes both ways. You can ask specific questions and get specific answers. For instance ask god how many stars exactly exist in the Milky Way. Get back to me when you get an answer. But you won't because there is never an answer to any question because you have no relationship with any god... it's just yourself.

I really needed to hear this tonight. I’ve been really worried about a certain family members who I believe to narcissistic and cold hearted. Even as sinners God still loves us even if some of us, who sin without apology. I’ve been praying to Him to help me love as He does unconditional to those who hurt me or those I care about as He loves unconditionally who sin and hurt against Him. What I struggle with though is by their actions and what I know about narcissists, is the odds of them changing are slim but I know God wants them in Heaven. I pray for them because I know it hurts our God to not have His children with Him in paradise, but it’s hard to have faith/hope they will make it to heaven. It wasn’t until the end of the video that I felt Father Mike was talking directly to me, or perhaps the Holy Spirit trying to say something to me through him. That I need to focus on my journey. What am I doing to get to Heaven, to love and please my God? I needed that reminder. I know I have parts of me that I need to work on so I am going to move my focus to how to deeper my relationship with God even more. Thank you!

@@sunflowerrayne8885- God is not bound by his sacraments but we are. So if for example someone is not Catholic or unable to get to confession before death then of course God can still give his mercy. But we have the sacrament of reconciliation which is the most sure way of receiving forgiveness. If the priest giving confession doesn't believe it , I doubt he would offer it, but even so, it would not make any difference. It is God giving forgiveness through the priest. So as soon as you hear "your sins are forgiven" know with certainty it is true

Repent and believe that Jesus Christ is Lord and you will receive the Holy Spirit. Then after that you can read the Gospel of John. This is the only way to be saved. Getting baptized and or praying the rosary is not going to do anything to save you. John 1:12-13 says: But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. We are saved by faith alone. God bless you.

From an intellectual perspective I believe that the majority of stories of near death experiences (NDE) affirm Father's teachings. The Christian teachings of God being an incredibly loving God are confirmed by thousands of NDE's. Which is awesome!

This was totally me. I have been a drifter in my Catholic faith my whole life, well since I was a kid anyway. I have found a renewed faith and I love it. I love Jesus. I am grateful that I now feel this way and I will try my best to live the right way. I was lucky enough to experience Jesus' presence and love but at the time I didn't even realise what it was. I know now and I hope that I will be good enough to be allowed into Heaven. Praise Jesus. Thank you for your simple explanations of things I would think at times.

This is encouraging to hear and I want to just share something with you out of love; I saw you said that you 'hope you are good enough to be allowed into heaven'. The fact is that nobody can be good enough, we can never fullfill the law. We always fail daily and our good works are always tainted by sin HOWEVER Jesus did it all for us and lived a perfect life. All we must do is repent and have faith in him for our salvation. Our good works are the fruit of our faith, as the Holy Spirit works in our hearts to sanctify us. Our good works do not contribute to our salvation. You may disagree with me as this is different from what the Catholic church teaches but it is what the bible teaches and it is so so wonderful and it fills us with assurance! Ephesians 2 8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. I would recommend listening to Core Christianity podcast which you find can everywhere (you can also send in your questions and they have great resources too on their website). Also the American Gospel documentary on Netflix has a fab illustration of Catholism and salvation. I hope this helps you!

Lord Jesus I know I'm a sinner. I know you died for my sins and rose 3 1/12 days later , I now ask you to live in me, I ask you to be my Lord and my Savior, I pray this in Jesus name , Amen .
