Hi Gareth, we`ve had a few tins of Just Essentials rice pudding now and thoroughly agree with you in all you say. We don`t use sugar in our house but we do use sweetener so we add just a teaspoon of Silver Spoon powdered sweetener per tin and it`s just fabulous, especially with a spoonful of Strawberry jam in also. While speaking to you, I must mention that I`ve just had a tin of Just Essentials Stewed Steak...£1.75, my wife said "It`ll be rough and chewy at that price". Totally wrong, it was so so delicious, the steak was very tender and tasty but the gravy it was in a class of it`s own, unbelievable, the most flavoursome gravy to accompany anything in a tin I`ve ever had in my life and believe me I`ve had plenty, I ain`t no spring chicken anymore. So, next time you`re in Asda, pick yourself a tin up and give us your expert opinion on the steak and especially the gravy, I think you could be impressed.

I was brought up on Ambrosia creamed rice and I still love it - straight out of the fridge with a dollop of strawberry jam. But, with a bit of jam, that Essentials has got to be the best option. As an aside, I also love Ambrosia custard.

Recalling the last few months of your comparisons, it seems the branded ones seem to generally have more salt, sugar and fat than the essentials/own-brands. Those are the things which add to the flavour but equally are less healthy. The essentials look great on both price and are that little bit healthier (or as healthy as processed food can be). I've only recently found your channel, and am liking these comparisons, so thank you. I don't buy rice pudding because of the relatively high sugar content (I'm diabetic), and have now got out of the habit of liking things too sweet. But the Asda one falls within the range of sugar that I could actually have occasionally, so I might well go and buy a can to try it.

I do my own rice pudding in the slow cooker,but very interesting to see the difference in taste and price. Just shows you don’t need to pay for the dearest you can always add a little more sugar or some jam to the cheaper one.

Milk puddings every Monday and Thursday for primary school dinners in the sixties. Rice pudding came with rose-hip syrup and semolina came with red jam. We also had tapioca (frogspawn)-can’t remember what came with that because I hated the texture so much I could never eat it. Friday was chocolate sponge with chocolate custard- highlight of the week!

Not getting bored of these videos at all. You provide a great service for people like myself, who don't have much money. I especially appreciate the Asda cheapo brand.

I get that Asda one all the time. It's decent even when cold, over a slice of cake, or even straight from the tin, with a dash of flavouring extract. I've got salted caramel, coconut, vanilla, almond & a few others. It never gets boring.

Such fond memories of tinned rice pudding, heated in the tin, during camping trips. Makes the icy feet, damp clothes and toileting anxiety all worthwhile.

The label on the Ambrosia did say it was made with full cream milk as it's first ingredient, while the Asda said skim milk. As a growing child or an adult with a high activity job the Ambrosia used to make better sense. Most of our jobs now don't need as many calories. I could see a dollop of honey and cinnamon bringing up the taste bar, or dried fruit and ginger.

This brought back memories of school dinners, I loved rice pudding with a dash of jam, likewise semolina, or tapioca and sago (frog spawn, lol). But the point is well made in this video, if a spoon of sugar or sweetener were to be added to the Asda product (and perhaps heated slightly longer in the pan to reduce it), then the Asda product is a no brainer.

Hi Gareth. Good to see another comparison. Here's just a bit of general info. Here in Thailand a big crop is Tapioca. It grows underground like sweet potatoes but has a long woody stem nearly 2 metres long. Sugar cane and Tapioca are fermented to make Ethanol which is part of the mix for Gasohol ( 91 grade car fuel) and obviously goes to make Tapioca pearls for milk puddings as well. I've tried both of these I admittedly preferred the ambrosia one. But the just essentials was perfectly acceptable and of course cheaper

Best tinned rice, by far. is M&S. Best I've tasted and 75p a can

I grew up on Fine fayre yellow pack foods, My dad always bought bashed tins ect from bejam as they gave the best reduction. His moto was if you don't eat it you can do without. I still buy cheap brands and don't know any better.

I usually buy Marks and Spencer rice pudding, by far the best in my opinion. But the price has recently gone up from 55p to £1. Ambrosia used to be frequently on offer in most supermarkets 2 for £1 or 2 for £1.20, but now over a pound for 1 tin. You expect to pay a bit more for Ambrosia and M&S, but how can they justify such massive increases when Asda can sell it for 25p?

It was amazing, when you showed the overhead shot of the rice puddings cooking, I could have sworn blind that I actually smelled the rice pudding cooking just as if i was standing there inhaling the steam from the pots. I'm 73 years old and this video brought back fond memories of when I was a kid and my mum used to make rice pudding on cold winter's days. (She didn't buy it in a can either, she made it with rice, milk and sugar). We also used to have jam with our rice pudding. (And I can remember my mum making semolina too.) Thanks for the memories Gareth.

You can make your own with 200g pudding rice, 800ml milk, a little butter and a couple of spoons of sugar. Makes at least 8 servings and costs approx £1.

Loving these reviews Gareth, they have opened my eyes and being on a budget is helping me, so thanks, my normal shopping bill is around 80 a week, last week shopped just essential only it was 31 pound that is one hell of a difference, plus eating better food a chicken, mince , fish etc proves how these big brands are ripping us off , bet there not happy with these saving ranges , lol

My mum used to make a massive one on Sundays in a big pan in the oven… Used to have it whilst my kid brother watched Fraggle Rock Inthink it was?!? Used to have a skin on the rice, but tasted lovely….

Devon knows how they make it so costly. Personally I don't mind it less sweet but as you say, a teaspoon of sugar is all you need. I put some nutmeg and a handful of raisins in mine before I heated it. Lovely!

This comment is actually about the rice puddings! I prefer Ambrosia Traditional Rice Pudding in the tin with the brown label. It contains sultanas. I bake it in a small Pyrex dish in the mini oven and it gets a nice golden brown crust on top. The rice is too stodgy straight out of the tin, so I add a little milk, even single cream if I have any, and that makes it taste super delicious. Finally, notwithstanding my earlier comment on restricting sugar, I do drizzle a tablespoon of genuine maple syrup (from Aldi) over the pudding 5 minutes before the end of cooking time. It's a treat I allow myself once in a while.

The Lidle rice puddings are lovely both full and low fat they tasted sweet to me.Great review Gareth and we'll never get bored of saving money.Take care mate.

Ahh yes, rice pudding. Lot's of childhood memories of mum making this. She always used canned evaporated milk and condensed milk and a pinch of salt. A light dusting of nutmeg when served. I think your spot on although the Ambrosia is better tasting it just don't justify the price difference I love the Ambrosia tapioca but I'm not paying £1.60 a tin for it on principle but no one does a cheaper version of that.

You threw in that comment about no alcohol right at the end, and i have not drunk any alcohol for about three years. There are several reasons why. First, i used to drink quite a bit, especially when I was living in Germany where alcohol in the 1970s was really cheap. It just became a habit. Second, nowadays I have achieved remission of my type II diabetes by cutting out a lot of sugar, and alcohol is not good when one has diabetes. Third, about three years ago I found I would buy a bottle of wine and drink a glass, and then the bottle would be open for two weeks without drinking any more of it. Sometimes I fancied a glass, mostly not, so the wine would just go stale and I'd end up pouring it away. Over time, I just stopped buying alcohol and now I never think it's something I'm missing out on. It's like smoking. I gave up 25 years ago. For the first few years I'd smell someone's smoke and I could feel the urge to smoke coming on again. But after 25 years i no longer have any hankering after ciggies at all. Yes, it took that long!

I usually buy Ambrosia when it's on offer but a lot of the named brands are going a bit silly on price now. I will try an Asda one when next shopping as I usually put a blob of strawberry jam on the top anyway, or even a cheeky squeeze of Aldis honey. Thanks for the upload mate.

Sugar, Honey or Syrup, or Jam, Lemon Curd or Fruit, lovely! Easy to make your own in the oven, little knows of butter on top and freshly ground nutmeg, really lovely. A packet of pudding rice will last you ages. Milk and sugar is ample, some folk add cream but there's really no need. My old Mum used to make Semolina, Rice or Sago puds when she had milk to use up. It's good to make your own if someone in the family is Dairy milk intolerant. XXX

Another great video. The thing that worries me a little is when products, especially ready meals, pies, sauces etc, are very cheap. As a keen home cook I usually make everything from scratch but do occasionally use pre made stuff for convenience and I know about ingredient quality. I do wonder how many products are so relatively cheap and especially those containing meat rely on enhancing chemicals to give them flavour and what meat is actually being used. Yes the big companies have economies of scale and most brands are actually produced in the same factories. For example a chicken nugget may contain 100% breast meat but it is all probably mechanically reclaimed using a pressure wash which will include cartilage, sinew and possibly bone fragments which is them pressed into the required shape for processing. Imagine how turkey dinosaurs are made! However paying a premium for a leading brand does not guarantee a higher quality ingredient product. Obviously at this time many people are under financial pressure and need to prioritise their spending and I think you are probably helping them make choices. 😁

I eat Essential Rice Pudding. It's just hit and miss, with Asda. Sometimes it's as good as Ambrosia. Other times it's slightly runnier. Just add a bit o jam. Yum yum

Hi Gareth, I tried the essentials fish fingers yesterday, spot on they were lovely. This morning I tried the essentials porridge 🤔 looking at it I thought it was going to taste like ready brek, but it didn’t , it was lovely, made with milk and added a bit of sugar, I was well impressed 👍

They taste quite nice cold, these tinned “milk puddings” - my mam insisted on heating them up - tried to “make it go further” by adding water to it, as she did with soup - and it made it all watery! Heated up, you couldn’t tell it from porridge! Rice, semolina, sago, tapioca and even macaroni (before it was merged with cheese to make macaroni cheese) were sold as (whatever) Milk Pudding! I like the homemade variety with all that lovely skin on the top! Westward Ho! The only place in the UK that ends with an exclamation mark! You could be wrong, you could be right - a Public Image Ltd song - it was called Rise!

Love rice pudding and love semolina. We would be given tapioca pudding at school and I and a few others would be only ones to eat it, the other kids would turn their noses up and would call it frog spawn lol! Mum though made a lovely huge homemade rice pudding, we would put strawberry or raspberry jam on top....lovely! 😋 these comparisons are great and we never get bored with them, you can always pimp up the cheaper brand to your liking and save lots of dosh!

The ASDA has only skimmed milk, the Ambrosia had both skimmed and full cream milk, which probably accounts for the creaminess. ASDA Tesco and Aldi all have a 25p pudding, they are a little less sweet and thinner than the Ambrosia. They also feel as if they have used long grain rice rather than the more expensive short grain pudding rice. However, add a spoonful of jam and you may not notice a lot of difference. They all stock a 60p version, which is thicker and sweeter, comparable to Ambrosia. I've not bothered to buy the Ambrosia for over twenty years. When I was riding long distance (12 hour) cycling time trials I survived on rice pudding handed up to me in plastic cups as I was riding. The cheaper ones were better as it slipped down easier, sometimes it would be mixed with tinned fruit cocktail to thin it and add interest. I'm still partial to rice pudding straight from the tin.

You can add sugar and powdered milk if it isn't as creamy !!!! I buy large bags of rice so I would make my own Rice pudding !!!! One nice thing I do is put strawberry jam in a bowl and pour rice puding on top !!! Then I have it cold !!!!

Thanks! Just bought the Tesco cheap rice pudding... was just as good as Ambrosia! Lower sugar is always better... you can add sugar but you can't take it away!

I always found Ambrosia too rich, and won't eat it. It always made me think it was full of evaporated milk. Comparison reviews are helpful for people with families and a low budget. Good job.

I’ve never had bought rice pudding, always made our own and it was Never eaten hot! Always ice cold with home grown and cooked stewed apricots. It does need sugar in it, and we used to add vanilla essence.

Thanks Gareth……I’m trying as many essentials products as I can; soups, beans, rice pudding, etc. etc. and mostly I have found little difference in quality between the top brands and the essentials. Saving a load of money though!

Thanks a spoon of sugar costs much less than 90 pence I like it with a spoon of jam also a lot less than 90 pence. I subbed about 2 weeks back and you have saved us lots of money again thanks we need to save as inflation is getting worse every day try the asda dark chocolate it's really good have a really good Christmas. My dad used to work in a food factory. Food products would get packed into 'branded' packaging and also into 'home; brand for the supermarkets. He said there was only minor changes to most recipes. But the price varied widely once in the shops.

You have taken me back many years to my childhood, my sister always had jam in hers, I never did, and when you mentioned semolina, it was one of my favourites, my sister's was tapioca, Mom used to make a pudding every Sunday, I loved her drainpipe pudding, (maccaroni pudding, with nutmeg on the top) also her cherry pie, and apple crumble were delicious. In the late 70s, I worked in a milk factory in Wales. We made rice pudding. About 6 or 7 different brands, all in the same facility. The only difference between the most expensive and the cheapest was the ratio of sugar to rice. Less rice and more sugar in the cheaper varieties. It might be different now, of course, but the price differential between these two brands seems to be somewhat excessive. Paying for the label, I suspect. Personally, I make my own rice pudding in the pressure cooker, as I don't have an oven. It takes minutes and is cheap and tasty. Great reviews, by the way!
