That's because it originally was a chick but they were told to make it a dude at the last minute so that's why his design is a girl in XI. If you look at the intro of 13 they drew him the way the higher ups intended.

One notable dick thing Ash does that kinda gets glossed over since he does a lotta stuff to mainstays is that Ash pretty much sets up his own teammates to fight each other, which is potentially lethal given one of them is a professional assassin. Even with knowing both Oswald and Shen Woo survived their duel, it’s still probably the biggest dick move Ash pulls.

He's controversial here because this whole story is his fault. This plot is pretty much Ash Saga Part 2

Lore is the main reason. Ash is not that strong in KoF 13 really, you will rarely see him in competitive play compared to like Kim or Mr Karate.

Because if you care enough about the story that you would be mad of Ash stealing the powers, then you would know that all of those characters are very protected in defeat, being after fighting a big boss or between them, and Ash just coming and taking what's left

Those From The Past don't serve Orochi, they are there to harvest his powers, and use it for timetravel to rewrite history. This is why hakkeshus Mature and Vice returned in KOFXIII, so they can protect Orochi from Saiki's group.

Orochi was killed at the end of KoF 14 though. TST took him out right after he revived.

I did some question in the KOF reddit, and they told me that Ash can be considered a zoner in KOF standards, because other would be zoners like King, Heidern and Athene can also pull of long combos (Athena even has a god dam command grab!). So I am aware that I won't win just by hitting fireballs, but that's fine to me, I'm the ones who belive you can't zone forever and that you have to finish the job anyways

ash was not a commonly used character in 13 at all, he is mid tier at best. If you wanted level your health bar with one jump in, many characters were much better at it
