Creating a living breathing dynamic world for an MMORPG is an extremely difficult task. Almost zero MMOs have even attempted it and the ones who have, failed in some form.
However, Ashes of Creation has decided to take on this monumental task to create a truly dynamic player driven ecology system using a plethera of lessons and talent from across the MMORPG genre. Can Intrepid succeed? Well, in today's video we'll be discussing what an ecology system is, how Ultima Online attempted and failed and how Ashes of Creation is changing things up to solve the problems of old.
Check out the original Ultima Online Ecology video:

Narc will get his own npc and quest, gather some copper residue for a alchemist who then makes cop.....ium in a vial, that allows you to breathe in a toxic cave where you are to obtain some epic loot, but it wasn't there for some reason. This is a daily quest that repeats forever.

So, regarding the ecology, It sounds like quite the undertaking to get it to function; but it sounds to me like a good system to force people to spread out over the world. Not stick to the most convinient place where most materials are abundant. We'll see how it actually plays out during Alpha.

You'd have to near on code for human existence/behaviour to get something to work that can be imitated with less effort and enough accuracy that most people wouldn't notice or care. I call it the Jurassic Park Concept: You're so preoccupied with whether or not you could that you didn't stop to think if you should.

i know how things went for ultima but personally i feel that flat out, if ashes succeeds than EVERY mmorpg going forward will NEED this simply because a dynamic world that reacts to what the players do rather than what new rollercoasters the devs add is EXACTLY how a true mmorpg should work as the whole point of mmos is to be a experience you have with your fellow community members and the entire story of the world is supposed to be written by the players and what interactions they have with eachother on all levels from a few guys making a solid dungeon run group together and become friends to massive guild conflicts that flat out, play out like real wars as caravans get hit to inhibit the flow of resources to enemies and enrich your own side and stratigic points of conflit get taken up as the guilds conflict goes on. really like ashes will be the first mmorpg with a world like this but i feel that really, this is what the standard always shoulda been.

I think Ecology system is good on paper but needs a lot of constraints to be available on a large population like the MMO crowd. Most people don't care about overfarming even if it is to their own detriment, like drying up their land of resources and create an imbalance in the ecosystem, because they want to simply do it without repercussions. I speak from personal experience that a lot of people I've played alongside in MMOs I've played don't care or want consequences of them playing a game because they want to do something, they'll do it and "future me" will deal with it eventually. When faced with a game like Ashes which has consequences (like having to travel to another node and risk being attacked to have resources stolen) they'll blame the game's design not suiting their needs and wants, it's not their fault because it's the game that was designed wrong, not the player's fault for making wrong choices. I'm sure Steven has great ideas and can pull a sustainable ecosystem with enough testing but I fear that without a firm stance and a good explanation on how it works, a bunch of people will just cry "the game didn't stop me from crashing at full speed on a wall" despite being told that you'll hurt yourself doing so. I might be pessimistic but that's what my experience playing with people has been so far.

I hope this system, if it is fully implemented, is highly transparent. I want the player base to be able to see these "land scores" and how they're affecting them. While I agree it would be immersive as hell to have to look around, without these scores being visible to players I doubt the average player will realize it exists. Like Narc said, out of sight out of mind. It would also be a form of reward to know that you're actually having a positive (or negative) impact if you're striving for one. Having this system tied into the world events is brilliant, but if it's going to be a big impact full system you and your nodemates need to know where the lines in the sand are so you don't go too far and screw your node up unintentionally.
@Hoto74
@Hoto74 Жыл бұрын
Sorry, but I don't like that transparency, I'm a fan of theory crafting. Players never should fully understand that background systems and only building theories how it maybe could work. That makes a world much more interesting than making everything transparent. If you know all there is nothing interesting left. Also if it would be all transparent players would know how they can trigger such world boss events and it would fast turn into players breaking the gameplay for farming world bosses. No, too much knowledge over an MMO world is nothing good, it ruins the game. A MMO world needs its secrets.

Ecology. What Steven describes sounds interesting but it will depend on the systems we have to manage the environment. Do I know how many trees I can cut down before I have an impact? If I’m a mayor and I want to halt all lumberjacking in a mode to allow the environment to recover, what can I do? Etc. Otherwise the metropolis nodes will always look like a landfill and the healthy nodes will be the ones farthest away, which will already happen with simply having it take so long for resources to grow back.

If they could implement migrating npc types I'd be super impressed. Imagine a node having wolves around it and quests to kill them and you can forage their pelts for crafting. At update node times, if enough quests to kill wolves are achieved they disappear from that node. Then another nearby node that also migrated another npc can adopt those wolves. And if a node becomes more civilised, less wild animals spawn on nearby nodes... this ofc is just awesome on paper.

As someone who has taken part in a number of MMO Alfa and Beta tests ... including Ultima Online that had its first Alfa in 1995 and 8 month Beta in 1996 that rolled into the 1997 launch did any good to solve the problems of a games system that could not keep up to the players desire to level there skills and pillage the game of resources. The living world mechanics just got in the way of what players enjoyed the most ... progression. On one hand you had a game world trying to balance scarcity of resources with a living world system no one gave a shit about and on the other hand you had 350 thousand players frustrated they had nothing to chop, pick, mine or hit with their wooden sword to train there skill up.

Defo not saying that Ashes won't be a success , on the contrary , it will revolutionise the genre . But what worries me the most is this , the dynamic world . Yes , in today's mmorpgs ,doesn't matter which game , the open world doesn't feel alive and meaningful . FF14,Runescape,WoW,Lost Ark , even GW2 becomes a hub fiesta at some point . And it's sad . But on the other hand , when i want to go kill beasts and skin them for their leather , i want to go to area X fully knowing that the beasts will be there . When i want to gather resources of any kind , i want to go to area Y fully knowing that the resources will be there . The only thing i accept is having competition for these resources even if it means PvP . Seasons , weather etc should only affect immersion , not our ability to gather resources . And resources depleting if players play/gather/kill too much , may add realism but it's a big nono for me . The number one design pillar of game development is respecting the player's time . And this dynamic world achieves the exact opposite

Honestly I've loved games that has somewhat of an eco system. I do believe it gives off a certain polished vibe, knowing that the game is alive in a sense. (As long as I don't age and die and have to restart). I just hope certain aspects aren't too complicated. To make a legendary weapon or something... To have to wait for a certain season, I can see that. To have to wait for season... day time, maybe. To have to wait for season, day time, and control of node... idk Just to farm and craft certain things. If it is that hard to get things I really hope it is worth the time. I can see things getting out of hand with it. Hopefully it don't end up taking too much more time for that and the community isn't always straight up bloodlust.

I always have better memories of games that had systems like these in their games f.e. arx fatalis with its cooking and magic systems, FEAR with their communicative AI or even Alien isolation with their mic detection or the alien learning your habits. Its stuff like this that makes you love the game even if its something that goes actively against the player. Makes the games feel "real" and not 1 and 0s.

It'd be nice for you to take another swipe at asmon's shitty takes regarding pvp--drama = big ad revenue 'all pvp mmos are dead/dying' -- all mmos are dead'dying, also eve/runescape are/were great games, albion online has a steady population / growing currently

Guna say it now. Building systems that players have controll over that have 0 real world consequences won't work. Players will ruin the world ecology and not give a poop about maintaining it. And those who do try to fix/maintain it will quickly learn that other players will sit around. Wait for others to fix it then swoop in and steel the reward of the work ruining it again in the process. NW is a great example of this. It will be a poop show.

I'm pretty sure the surveying and land management systems are brand new and never before discussed. They may in the spirit of the game and its other systems but they are new. Is it scope creep? Depends on how you define it.

@@encouraginglyauthentic43 That's a ridiculous claim. SWG died before wow turned to crap. SWG was killed by wow when it was good. SWG tried to be a worse wow when wow was good. Comparing a dead mmo to what wow is today is absurd on the face of it.
