Florida woman Ashley Britt McArthur, 42, stands trial in Pensacola, Florida for first-degree murder in the death of private investigator Taylor Wright, 33. If convicted, she is expected to get an automatic life sentence without parole. You can watch court in the player above.
The defendant was sentenced in February to seven years in prison for cheating clients of her family’s business. That was unrelated to the murder allegation, but they do have something in common besides the defendant: money. Wright was in the middle of a divorce and is said to have put $34,000 in McArthur’s safe deposit box, according to court records obtained by Law&Crime. She tried to get that cash back to no avail, authorities said. Investigators claim that she met up with McArthur on September 8, 2017, to retrieve it. That was the last anyone heard from her.
Authorities say the victim’s girlfriend reported her missing the following 14th. She told cops that she and Wright had been texting back and forth until about 11:20 a.m. on the 8th. Wright stopped replying. The girlfriend called McArthur, who said that Wright couldn’t come to the phone because she was riding a horse, according to the probable cause statement. Then, at 7:58 p.m., the girlfriend got a text from Wright’s phone. The text said she needed time to think and get life on track, according to authorities.
The defendant spoke with detectives on the 18th. She claimed to have driven Wright around on the morning of the 8th until the victim asked to ride horses on a property belonging to McArthur’s family. In this story, they were there for an hour and headed back to McArthur’s home. According to the statement, she said she went inside her residence, but Wright was gone when she stepped out again later.
Investigators claim this story didn’t stand up to scrutiny. The defendant’s phone records didn’t place her at the area she claimed to be. It showed her by a property her family owned in another area, authorities said. Investigators said they checked it out and found Wright’s secret grave just west of that property. She had been covered in concrete, they said.
According to officials, McArthur’s cousin said she had contacted him on September 8, and asked if he was going to be there that day. He said that he wasn’t there because he was at a funeral.
The defendant’s bank records allegedly showed that she deposited $34,000 in her bank account the month before. It was a cashier’s check in Wright’s name. The funds had been spent, investigators said.

Let me get this straight. Taylor, the victim, asked her friend, Ashley, the suspect, to hide money for her. Taylor was divorcing her husband. Ok. Ashley said, she'd hide the money, but instead, spent it on the guy she was seeing. So instead of giving Taylor her money back, Ashley killed her, and is now on trial for her friend's murder. Wow.

They are actually told by their lawyers to be taking notes. helps keep their mind off of their personal emotional reaction to the ongoing testimony and prevents involuntary reactions that the jury may pick up on. Also it supposedly makes them look more professional and like they are actually active in the trial which an innocent person would obviously do to keep themselves out of prison.

@@butch4butch I completely agree! She could have simply said the decedent sent the defendant x number of texts over x number of days, requesting access to the safe deposit box. They're going to show the texts later anyway, which is always more compelling. She went in far too much detail about several issues. For example, who cares about the size of the warehouse at this point! I don't know how long this woman has been practicing, but that's a rookie move!

I thought it could have been improved. Reading the texts while continually saying full names along with "this defendant" about 900 times was not what I would call concise. It seemed average to me, but at least it wasn't a Hollywood production like some of them are. The blatant grammatical errors didn't help either. I know, I'm a critic, but those details stand out to me.

I watched a few videos of Ashley McArthur and there was no sign of remorse, even in court, there was no sign of discomfort, you could see her demeanour "just as calm and as normal" as could be. There was some make-up she put on and other than that, as charming and as "graceful" as what the editor said. We are seeing a "pyschopath" and she is one of them.

While listening to the texts between the victim and her trusted "friend", I just keep thinking of the complete audacity of the defendant blowing Taylor off when the urgency and importance of getting her money were both made perfectly clear. Pretty sure she did this on purpose, possibly not just buying time, but perhaps purposefully utilized in crafting her evil plan to lead Taylor toward her own demise.

Here's what i think happened. Ashley spent Taylor's money. She was worried about getting caught and tried to stall meeting up at the bank. Taylor was about to be put in jail so she didn't have much time to wait and chase Ashley around. She wanted that money and probably was getting tired of Ashley. They meet up, Ashley convinced her to go to Britt Rd. Taylor is getting impatient, either Ashley told her she spent the money or Taylor figured it out. An argument ensued, Ashley knew she was going to get her ass kicked, sued or maybe Taylor knew about her frauding and killed her.

@@K9_Queen19 I don't know about "fair to say" but I think its a trick way to get a yes answer. I KNOW that using the contraction 'NT when you ask a question is DEFINITELY a way to get a yes answer, even if the following sentence will be the person explaining why the answer isn't yes. For example: "The evidence against Ashley is quite compelling but she could still be innocent, COULDN'T she?" In the flow of conversation, people will say "yes" and they will either pause at a loss for words or will then explain why its not a yes. It just works!
