GRAMMY, CMA and ACM award winner Ashley McBryde cut her teeth playing country songs in biker bars - and it shows. The Grand Ole Opry member’s 2018 major label debut Girl Going Nowhere (Warner Music Nashville) charmed The New York Times, NPR, Rolling Stone, Paste, The Washington Post and more, all en route to landing a GRAMMY nomination for Best Country Album. McBryde closed out 2019 with ACM New Female Artist, CMT Breakout Artist, a New Artist of the Year win at the 53rd Annual CMA Awards and two nominations for the 2020 GRAMMYs for Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance for “Girl Goin’ Nowhere.” Her follow-up Never Will was tagged by Rolling Stone as one of the most anticipated of the year alongside NPR, who also ranked her Top 10 RIAA Platinum-Certified single “One Night Standards” as one of the best songs of 2019. The album earned McBryde a 2021 GRAMMY nomination for Best Country Album, making Never Will the only album nominated for Country Album of the Year by the ACMs, CMAs and the Recording Academy in the same award season. Her GRAMMY-winning duet with Carly Pearce, “Never Wanted To Be That Girl,” went all the way to No. 1 and earned McBryde and Pearce the ACM and CMA award for Musical Event of the Year. McBryde was also honored with the 2022 CMA International Artist Achievement Award for the most significant creative growth, development and promotion of the country music industry outside of the United States. I love this song because it reminds me of all those people who said 21 years ago that I'd never get sober or stay sober... 21 years this October without one drop. Why Is the line 'as I step Into this circle with a Gibson In my hand' not in any other version of Girl goin nowhere. - Jacqueline We put that’s line in the lyrics for one special night only. My debut. To keep that special, that’s the only time I’ll do it. Only when I’m playing my Gibson and I’m in the circle.

I've been away from country music for years. I'm another '90s country fan, so Ashley is fairly new to me as I bring myself back to "modern" country. Describe what it feels like to you to be standing in the circle. - Raelene You’d think standing in that circle would feel Iike all the Opry members from all of history are piled on your shoulders... but but it doesn’t. It is an eerie feeling but in a really good way. Maybe eerie isn’t the right word...reverent might be better. It feels like all the Opry members of all the years gone by are standing behind you encouraging you and saying “ we’re glad you’re here with us.”

I know there’s a special dressing room artists get to use only once, on their Opry debut. What can you remember about that room? - Lesley I’ll never forget that room. Room 4. You only get to be in that room on your debut night. The only other time I’ve even poked my head in was to congratulate another artist on their debut. And I didn’t step all the way in. I just poked my head in to keep that tradition alive and pure.

What advice would you give to a girl who’s dream is to make it to that stage? - Kelli First of all, if I can stand on that stage... you can stand on that stage. That’s part of the beauty of country music. You can be from anywhere and be of any status. The only thing you have to do is put in all the work. And if you love performing and writing and singing that isn’t too much to ask for. Hell, it’s hard to shut us up , those of us that have the bug. Just know this, The Opry wants you there. Country Music wants you there. Anyone whose dream is to help carry on the tradition of country music is welcome. The work isn’t easy and it can be really frustrating but it’s worth it to hear “We’re happy you’re here with us tonight“ on your debut.

It helps that you have a good voice, and your song-writing skills are excellent, Ashley. However, this song is an extra special example of your talents. It is so powerful, and tells your story well, kind of like Janice Ian’s At Seventeen, which touched me back in the ‘70s and I still love going back to that song when I need to feel, and enjoy a melody. I’ve watched you play this song at least 50 times, mostly from this Opry performance. I suspect I’ll keep coming back to this video for many more decades, Lord willing.

I got to experience it in HS Basketball. We played in front of 500- 1,000 - 2,000 fans a game. Some of our crowds were bigger and louder than others. When it was loud and a lot of people were cheering LOUDLY it was cool. Got you jacked up playing in front of a big crowd cheering hard when you make a basket or a dunk. So cool to thrill the crowd as a former athlete.

Of ALL the emotions you had to be experiencing that night, what was the single strongest emotion or thought that kept running through you? - Merritt Out of all the things I felt... Nervous, excited and everything between, the most overwhelming feeling was that it felt like coming home after being homesick for a long long time. That choked-up, finally here feeling.

I’m a HUGE fan of ppl who can stand up in front of a crowd, behind a guitar, and pour their hearts out. Ashley McBryde is my new most favorite artist of any genre by far!!! My question is why don’t I hear her songs played more often on the radio? I’m a strictly country music listener while using radio in my car. I’ve just recently discovered this completely authentic country music badass! I wish I would’ve heard her sooner! I mostly hear male artists playing. When you were up on stage and gazing out into the crowd did any face in particular jump out at you?- Miranda I saw so many faces I recognized. I didn’t realize I’d be able to see everyone to clearly. Still to this day when I play the Opry I can look in to the room, even when its empty and still remember who sat where... a lot of em anyway.

Do you think you will ever have the same feeling as you had when you first performed in the circle at the Opry? - Tracey What I’ve found each time I play the Opry is that that feeling never gets old or goes away. The first-time jitters may be a little less intense but the jitters are still there. The line up is so different each time that there’s always someone you’re over the moon to watch up close. There’s always someone you’re nervous to know is watching you and that reverent feeling of being part of country music history is always sitting in your throat. You know that that audience has travelled from all over to experience the Opry. Some for the first time! I reckon it’s always somebody’s first time... maybe that’s why that feeling stays in the building.

This was the most emotional thing I’ve ever witnessed...as a struggling singer I felt every single word of this song when I first heard it and even though I’m not no one big like Ashley has made it to be it just makes me feel something I can’t explain...she is my reason for wanting to keep pushing and my idle this girl deserves that spot on that stage and I cried right along with her because I felt her appreciation her pride and her nerves...keep it up Ashley you are absolutely amazing and you’ve taught me so much whether you realize that or not I hope to be a piece of the artist you are...country music should be proud to call you one of its own girl and damn right to that Gibson in your hand!!! Still wiping tears lol!!!!

It's finally coming back!!! Missed this video so much!! One of her best performances in my opinion. The way she changed the line to, "and I step into this circle with a Gibson in my hand", made me feel so proud of her for making it to where she is today, despite all the people who said she'd never make it. Much love Ashley, keep doing what you do best. Which is making music that makes people really feel something genuine. Thank you for being one of the best influences in my life! ❤️

I finally got to meet her on March 7th in Indy..literally a week before the pandemic hit..at 2am after the show..my gf and I had been waiting about 2 hours..she finally came off her bus to meet the 20 or so people who had gathered..she could not have been more down to earth and nicer to us and everyone else..I told her I absolutely loved her music and if I could give her a big hug..got my pic taken with her as well..by far my greatest highlight from 2020.Hope you get your chance to meet her someday..she is an angel on earth!

Ashley you did it!!! and I was that little girl wanting to see nashville with my name in lights be a musician like my daddy did in the 70's.. I wish I had never listened to all the times I was told I wasn't going nowhere, but you are a inspiration to all the girls out there with nothing, but a dream and a Gibson, so you keep on and keep pathing the way like the wonderful women of country before you and we'll keep watching and listening to the girl who went somewhere..

So happy this is coming back! Ashley, I know this song is about your deeply personal journey. But I have never related to a song like I relate to this performance. I fear and dread crying on stage so I was stunned when I saw how the crowd lifted you up during this performance and how you complimented them at the end. 'Look at you!' God, I love this and I love you for creating it. You are so special and I am so proud to have you in the country community. Your career is everything wonderful and special and singular about country music and country music culture.

I am not a big country fan, but i'm getting more and more open to it. I uncovered this song when Huntergirl sang a shorter version of it on idol this season and I thought she did the sing proud. Take a listen, it's on you tube with thousands of views. I have fallen for Huntergirls music, ESPECIALLY her new single Redbird that she wrote and went #1 on a couple charts. She is an AMAZING talent. Luke Bryan says shes the BEST female country voice he's heard on idol in his 5 years on the show. After hearing Ashley's original version here for the first time I wept. IMPOSSIBLE not to if you have half a heart. SO BEAUTIFUL. NOW I have two most favorite country female singers, Ashley and Hunter. I hope and pray Huntergirl gets her shining moment someday in the Grand ole Opry circle like Ashley did here. I GUARANTEE, I will weep again 😢😏😉 TY

George Stright,Allen Jackson, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Reba, Lee Ann Womack, my beautiful woman in jeans do you have brought back true country music. They may have committed murder on Music Row but baby you brought it back. I cannot imagine all the people in country music before you that are pure country dial not love your music. I am not a country music fan. I was raised in the heavy metal era of the 1980s, but I think I just heard the most beautiful female voice in my lifetime. I am a new fan of this lady whose lived experiences have so many tales to tell -- I can't wait to go along for the ride!
