When you said about L plates an people wanting to get past, that is one of my pet hates, I always give learners more space so they don’t feel pressured.. everyone was a learner once!

I got lost in Liverpool many years ago. Pulled up next to a pedestrian to ask for directions. Not only did they give me directions, they offered me the use of their mobile phone(didn't own own one at the time) to call ahead and let the firm i was visiting know I was on my way albeit a tad late. What a great advertisement for the people of Liverpool.

The driver too impatient to hold back behind a learner car for a few extra seconds is the same type of person who sits in a Macdonald's drive through for thirty minutes. All angry and frustrated at the little things, and too narrow-minded to see things in proportion.

A cyclist fell onto the road today in Southampton in front of my car after hitting a bin. It was on a 30mph dual carriageway and the cyclist was cycling around the ending of a lay-by which meant the path angled towards the road before being parallel. However, the cyclist caught his handle bar on a bin and fell onto the road with his head almost hitting the centre of my lane in the road. I think it might be to your videos that I prepared for the worst and braked as the cyclist turned towards the road following the path before he fell off. This meant I had enough distance to break and avoid what could have been something a lot worst. The cyclist was thankfully OK and cycled away, id like to give you credit though Ashley as creating a channel like this and putting all of the time into it as it may not benefit you particularly, but is benefitting for many other people, and preparing them for the worst. My parents were pretty thankful with the way I prepared and slowed down slightly before the incident, especially as I’m 17 and i have 6 months driving experience.

Love the 'I bet that car is going to do that' game. I play it myself. Some drivers and vehicles are wonderfully predictable.

12:12 One of the things my dad got me doing when I started learning was simply going up and down through the gears on a straight country road until it was second nature. Once you can do that confidently it makes driving in busier areas so much easier as you can concentrate on more important things.

There used to be a panopticism around red lights, where people would feel as though proscecution for running one was a foregone conclusion. After years of police cuts and a few people taking chances, most people have realised that they are no being watched, they are unlikely to be caught, and there is no penalty to stopping. This is why everyone that can afford to should have a dashcam and report any inicidents they record, no matter how small it may seem. We need to get people thinking that they are always being watched and there's a high probability they will get caught.

That's also an unmarked police vehicle behind you (lights in grill, deep front reg plate mount to allow for side-facing lights, uniformed driver) in the first clip. Would've been nice for them to have a friendly chat with the driver with 'must-get-infront' syndrome about how to merge in turn.

Had a HGV job for a while working nights running out from a depot in Bradford. I soon realised things are different there. Traffic lights are just different pretty colours, Speed limits are doubled, Roundabouts can be taken clockwise or anticlockwise & Private hire have an additional set of own rules. So yep . A great learning experience.

Clip 17 was a superb example of how to support, instruct and encourage a learner driver - I wish my first driving instructor had been that good! (He wasn’t! - I passed third time around, with a second instructor!).

Thank you for driving by the police van carefully. You won't believe how many people go above the speed limit past an ambulance with lights on and paramedics loading a patient or working around the vehicle, so I imagine the boys in blue have similar nightmares.

I’ll be driving in the uk for the first time next January, I’ve got about ten years of driving in Australia and the USA but nothing like uk winter weather. These videos are mighty helpful for me.

Fantastic stuff - your face on the in-car camera is a picture Ashley when these things happen! 4:54 - it's a really interesting point about straight ahead at multi-lane roundabouts. I think it's really easy as the car looking to join not to look far enough over to your right - almost like a blind spot check - and miss a car where you are. I've almost found myself being guilty of that a few times but just caught it. When someone rectifies a mistake like that I do like to make a point of saying thank you if I can and it's safe - having been the person having the 'oops I've effed up there' moment myself enough times.

Generally I've found that the further south you go, the worse it gets for aggressive driving. I had to drive from Scotland all the way down to Kent one time, the first half of the journey was pretty relaxed, few issues and most people gave plenty space etc. Once I got to within about 50 miles of the Dartford crossing, the motorway was like a total dogfight, you'd be lucky to have anything more than a half second gap behind you, and if you left more than a half second gap in front of you, people just shoved into the space. Nasty stuff.

I just went for a 2 week trip in Ireland, driving around the whole island, did 1378 miles in total. I found that the driver attitude in Ireland is so much better than in England, people were relaxed, no issues, let each other out and improve flow for all. Coincidently as soon as I got back in England on the way home, I got tailgated and flashed because I was overtaking a car on a 2 line dual carriageway and another car came up behind going way over the speed limit. Then when I had finished my overtake and returned the the left lane in front of the car I overtook, the speeding car behind came by and in front an brake checked me. No problems because I expected it as soon as he came in front, and didn’t use my horn as it would be a waste of time. Makes me laugh when they are in so much of a rush but have time to do that. Attitudes are definitely a lot worse in England. (This was on the A453 towards Nottingham)

Clip 9 4:58 I sometimes give a right signal once on the roundabout, essentially whilst passing the first exit, just to help it situations like this. If there is no car on your right, it is unlikely to confuse anyone. If there is a car on your right, there's no need to indicate as they are holding the waiting traffic for you.

Its disgusting that people would increase risk and potentially cause an accident all to try and save a few seconds behind a learner driver. But if another driver had put them or one of their family members in hospital for the same thing. They would see it as a problem then. That’s the problem nowadays. Nobody thinks, they act and deal with the consequences after someone gets hurt. Great video Ashley. Very informative

I worked in Bradford for 10yrs as a driving insturctor. IMHO, Only London was worse than Bradford. Believe or not, I used to see some sort of crash nearly every day.

I live in a village in the middle of nowhere in Denmark and it's a very small village, maybe 20 houses at most and a straight road through. We've had alot of problems with people speeding through at over 80 km/h, some likely in the hundreds when the speed limit should be 50 km/h. We've had mulitple much loved cats killed by traffic as well as tragically, one of the children in the village. It took that much plus many complains before the municipality finally set up temporary "your speed" signs and eventually added road slaloms, which seem to have helped abit but there are still problems. I don't know what it's like in the UK but apparently here you can send an application ask the police to set up a speed camera van, I've not been paying attention to the average speed but maybe it's worth seeing if they can get one of those out here.

The fact that a taxi running a red light is memorable to you just shows how much better Liverpool's driving standards are than South Africa's

Fortunately, my area of Scotland (near that Dundee clip you showed) has less competitive and aggressive drivers, but a lot more elderly people driving cars. I try to leave as much room for other people's mistakes as possible, as a lot of them don't seem to use their mirrors at all.

10:00 if that silver car turning out was turning left, most people's attention would be to their right and most people probably wouldn't even bother doing a proper look to the left before they started rolling out... "lethal" is correct. Just don't overtake near junctions.

Notwithstanding the shenanigans that pop up on DCOA videos (Australia), I feel a lot more comfortable driving here than mixing it up in Liverpool, based on your videos, Ashley. More belligerence is my main take-away from your experiences, even before I consider the contributions you receive from others. Conversely, I think I am more chill than before from watching you.

I have only recently found your videos. We have loads of Red light jumpers and pavement parking etc in Cheltenham too and I have seen them in various places in other parts of the UK too.

Pavement parking really frustrates me because all too often it leaves insufficient safe space for pedestrians who are disabled (e.g. a guide dog user) or parents with young children.

Regarding pavement parking, where I live they have put up bollards and placed big metal flower pots on the pavements to stop cars parking. So now people find a gap and park on the pavement behind the bollards!

"Is it any worse where you live?" (with pavement parking and red light jumpers) Well, I live in Brussels, Belgium and traffic lights are basically treated as decoration over here. Pedestrians don't cross if it's green, they only look if the road is clear or not.

I'm on the Wirral. As soon as I go over to Liverpool I notice a pretty obvious change for the worse in the general attitude of drivers. To be fair to Liverpool, it's pretty much the same in Manchester, London etc. The stressed city environment doesn't bring out the best in people.

1:57 That happened many years ago down here on the coast. Long line of traffic on the sea front, someone did something similar as motorbike with a passenger was coming out the side. Luckily both were going slow so when they got knocked off the bike (luckily both wearing leathers) they only slide a long a short distance.

The dopg was probably reacting to the high frequency sound from the inverters in your electric car rather than the colour.

Something you can often spot about cars with more aggressive drivers is that their front wheels tend to be noticeably darker than the rear ones. This is a build up of brake dust (and cars' front brakes usually do significantly more work than the rears) and indicates two things 1. The dust has had time to accumulate, they may not care about the car very much to wash it so they also may not care about trading paint. 2. The amount of dust accumulated hints they do a *lot* of heavy braking which likely means they are going at higher speeds and getting very close to other vehicles before they decide to slow down.

I learned to drive in, and live in a sleepy Suffolk town. we do have our share of bellends here, but I went to Liverpool for an event last year - it was my first time driving in a big city, and I found myself completely stunned by some of the reckless and mindless driving there

Red light jumping became such a problem in Dubai that they started impounding your car for 3 days instead of issuing fines, and that seems to have solved the problem lol.

I live near Wolverhampton and the red light jumping is a complete JOKE. Not to mention the absolute lack of patience and discipline on the roads around here.

That last clip, I felt that the Discovery driver may have even tried to get in front of the Seat driver.

There's a spot near where I live where the double yellow line has rubbed out due to the sheer amount of people stopping on it. Makes it worse that it's right next to a very closed T junction.. I like to imagine people see the lines fading in and out and think 'Ooh! that's a spot!'

I'd be interested in your thoughts on the VW lane assist - I've recently started driving an ID3 which I assume has the same system as your Golf. I find it disconcerting at best, but mostly dangerous. Situations like the one in your video where you meet the tractor are the perfect example: I'd naturally take a position towards the left of the lane as I approached the blind corner and it complains. Then when you move right to the edge of the road to let the tractor past it actively tries to steer you towards it. If you don't stay perfectly centred in the lane on corners - often not the best road position - it changes the weight of the steering. I think it feels like hitting black ice. And in town driving it's actively tried to steer me into cycle lanes where the paint is worn or where it's identified by a different surface colour rather than white lines.

I live in the South West the general standard of driving is better than anywhere else i have been in the UK. When I drive in north of the M4 corridor I have to accept that i have to up my game as the roads are of a poorer condition and the other drivers seem to be very selfish and impatient. I also notice that traffic light phasing in the north can be different at cross roads, It tends to be green in only one direction at a time so the passing near side to nearside right turns blind spot never happens.

One of the things about One Pedal Driving with EVs is the ease of use. No braking, handbrake, clutch and hillstarts. Takes hassle out of letting people through and made me a bit more chill.

In Nottingham the trick is going into a right turn only lane and the gunning it at the green light to cut back into the forward lane in front of everyone else.

Encouraging the newbie to use more right foot when pulling out in traffic. Don't worry that won't take long. That right welly gets heavy very quickly. One minute you are encouraging your toddlers to walk holding onto the furniture the next you are barricading the foot of the stairs.😊

Dublin is pretty bad too. No idea here in London as I do 95% on cycle superhighways, take my time on main roads. People here seem more patient even at major junctions, rulebreakers seem to get punished by crashes more than police! Great stuff, be safe

Six of one and half a dozen of the other with the dog on the bike, Ashley. The fun part of me knows that some dogs love doing what their owners are doing but the killjoy road user in me says this is a potential distraction for both the rider and those around him "aww, look at the cute doggo riding that bike" they are watching him not watching the road.

Clip one was definitely a case of we must get ahead of the learner. Recently I spent sometime in Northumberland, driving around narrow lanes, going to small fishing villages. I was shocked, but tried to be prepared for the idiots overtaking cyclist, farm machinery, but worst of all the ones who cut corners on bends. Sometimes their face was an absolute picture when they then release there is a vehicle coming the other way.

clip 9: what we frequently have in US roundabout dashcam clips is a person seeing that the cammer is signaling to exit, so they emerge (safely) across their path, and the cammer pitches a fit because they want everybody to wait outside the roundabout until they are gone.

last night i left work in the countryside at 22h it was dark came across a car no lights on at all, the next one had front and rear fog lights on (no fog in this area for at least a month) driving at 20mph in a national speed limit. i over took them and they full beamed me. when i got closer to home i followed someone who might have been lost they stopped on a roundabout put their reversing lights on and turned to face the wrong way to get back to the exit they wanted but went down the in bound lane. The last bit i have two roundabouts i go straight on at the first and have to indication right to stop people from pulling out in front of me. the last one is a mini roundabout and i go right but all the oncoming think they have priority and go straight over the top of it forcing me to wait or get a dent. Yet it is holiday season in Dorset.

I used to live in Walthamstow, and now live much further away in Essex. I passed my license at the new house so my first roads I drove were those. when I went back to Walthamstow, I noticed the drivers comparably were so much more rude, cut off people so easily and driving with phones in hand

I’m noticing recently that the stereotype of the Audi/BMW driver is shifting to the Range Rover / Land Rover brand, impatient and pushy and oblivious to the size of their vehicle.

You wanted my thoughts on the cyclist carrying the dog. If the only brake he has access to is for the front brake, braking too sharply will cause him to go over the handlebars with the dog as the front wheel will lock and the rest of the bike, the dog and himself will continue to rotate over the wheel.

Its not only urban roads, its rural ones, the push and shove on our single track lanes are down right frightening!!! Sadly many folk can't reverse.

Question… do driving instructors in the UK need to have dual control vehicles? If not, do you have dual controls anyway? Here in Australia they are not re-edited, but when I learnt to drive (back in 1980), my instructor did have a dual control vehicle.
