Interestingly enough, I failed my test last week for looking through the back mirror whilst reversing after pulling up. After the test the examer explained that I should've been looking over my right shoulder to watch for any pedestrians emerging onto the road from the path (which makes perfect sense). I know this video is 4 years old and possibly slightly outdated, but I just thought I should mention that for anyone reading through the comments prepping for their own test.

Majority of the time reversing needs to be spent looking back behind so you can see through more at once and into the undistorted uncropped distance

my instructor only told me to turn left or right within two seconds before reaching the turn and he criticized me for being hesitant, he said that was been instructed in plenty of time already! some instructors just clueless! arent they?
@pineapplepenumbra5 ай бұрын
Sadly, yes. I've taught a lot of people who had previous instructors. Some obviously changed because they were unhappy with the instructor, some because they had moved around a bit, or their instructor had moved, changed jobs or retired. One thing I noticed was that very few of those pupils had been taught how to properly deal with parked cars and meeting situations. Some said that their previous instructor hadn't explained a situation, and then had blamed them when they cocked it up. One, on his first lesson, was asked if he knew how to do an emergency stop. He said that he thought he did and, rather than ask him to explain what he thought he should do, the instructor asked him to show him. So, he drove down the road and then yanked on the parking brake. The instructor, whose fault it was, then had a go out him for doing something so dangerous!

Parking on the right should not be tought. The bias of the headlight in nighttime conditions and the increased blind spot both front and rear for pulling out makes this manouver dangerous. I will certainly never park on the wrong side of the road.
@ThBlueSalamander Жыл бұрын
Will you if the only parking space available is on the wrong side of the road? Or would you just take the long way and make a U-turn? A use case for this manouvure probably is too niche though at best yeah. I don't understand why they replace three-point turning with this which is actually needed a lot of the time and can be done on most roads when not busy and a quicker method isn't being used.

Always signal . It is the first thing that an on coming vehicle will see . You are also signalling you intention to travel across the centre line . On a test you will not be asked to deliberately park behind another vehicle .
@ashley_neal6 жыл бұрын
If you signal and an oncoming vehicle is approaching you must take you indicator off as soon as possible so they don't think you're going. DON'T always signal, look and see whether it will help or hinder anyone first. On a test a vehicle can park in front of you after you've parked. Sorry for correcting you but people read comments with their tests coming up and your information may be misinterpreted. Thanks for watching, Ashley

mousehouse People think your going to move when you're not. If a car then slows to let you out it could fail the driving test. Exactly the same as if you were moving off from the left normally. Thanks for watching and your comments. Ashley

Hmm. I'm with you but your last point ".. tell me when you get there"?? I get frustrated with drivers who signal late and I'm thinking "tell me where you're going, not where you been!!" Mirror - Signal - Manoeuvre. Not S*d the Mirror - Manoeuvre aaaannnddd Signal 8)

@@ashley_neal Isn't a car slowing to let you out down to them slowing out of courtesy rather than you forcing them to out of dangerous driving? They could continue and ignore your signal. There's no pressure on them to stop just because your signal is on? Also, can you be failed if you're pulling out from the left and they do the same? What if they just want to help you?

Hi Ashley I thought part of your Adi test when reversing on the Wright you do a right to left blind spot check. That's what I was told by my tutor. You looked left to right. Or dose it not matter.

Since when was parking on the WRONG side of the road allowed?
@VespaT52 жыл бұрын
Well, it is allowed but wrong in my view. I'm in two minds about teaching it, it's obviously good to know how to deal with it correctly but I don't think it should be encouraged. Big crashes will occur, I reckon.
@radishpea66152 жыл бұрын
And if you cant reverse because someone has pulled up behind you? For the life of me I cannot understand why this would be part of the driving test and drivers "encouraged" to park on the wrong side of the road.

Hi. I have my test on the 14th December and I read online that in Huddersfield some examiners want this manoeuvre removed from the test, as it is not safe for the learners and they might also cancel your test or postpone it. Do you know any where else this is happening in the UK? I've been trying to contact and ask my instructor but she hasn't replied back. This is my 4th time n I really want to pass it. Thanks.

The safety concerns over the test are part of the reason for the strikes on 4th and 5th. It's happening around the country also.

Hi Ashley, I hope you can help. My lad is having pro driving lessons as well as myself taking him out. Two things are bothering me. His instructor has just asked for an extra £50 to cover insurance on the driving test. My Father ran a driving school and I have never heard of this before. I appreciate that you pay for an extra hour lesson whilst on test but that, plus another £50 seems strange to me. I know things change but is this normal? The second thing, his instructor tells him he is not to indicate when pulling away from a parked position at the side of the road. He did NOT state that this is the case only if there are no cars around. Keep safe and thanks for any info you mat be able to give me.

@@ashley_neal Thank you for getting back to me. I've just watched the video and left positive comment. Whilst I may not "always" agree with you regarding signals, in my view, that video is spot on. Thanks again.
@um021226 жыл бұрын
I would add that you need to make sure first that you're allowed to park on the right side. I would think that if the road markings prevent you to go over the road midline (continous lines etc.), than you are making an illegal manouver. Than you need to indicate right, slow down and make sure that it is safe to park, checking your mirrors and looking over your right shoulder to check the blind spot. When leaving, you could further back if your vision is impaired, but signaling should be the first thing to do before the car is set in motion. The second thing is to check if it is safe to move. Signaling is showing people around you your intentions, how can that be misleading?
@um021226 жыл бұрын
Once sure you can safely leave (checking mirrors and looking over your left shoulder), you can set the car in motion. Signaling should be on from the moment you decide to leave until joining the lane you intend to use after leaving.

It is also illegal after lights on time in virtually all case....so YES most UK drivers park illegally overnight...and instead of tackling this we are teaching a whole generation to do the same....only in the UK - i dispair

If you are signalling when stationary, the cars coming towards you don't know if you are saying 'let me out' or 'I'm going when you have passed'. If you are going to go when they have passed, why tell them.
@Bangandthedirtisgone2 жыл бұрын
@@Grahamvfr So, if you're not supposed to tell them you going to go once they've passed and then there's a good gap and no-one would benefit then do you apply the signal at all? What about cars coming up from behind? I also don't get why it's a fail if the other driver sees your signal and chooses to stop out of courtesy. No-one is forcing them and it's upto them.
@Grahamvfr2 жыл бұрын
@@Bangandthedirtisgone I understand your point. Yes I do apply and teach to apply the signal because you 'are' actually going, even if it appears no one will benefit. If someone stops to let you out, no you won't fail, but that's fine if you intended to signal to ask to be let out. But why tell someone who's coming up behind you that your pulling out, if your not pulling out. I've witnessed learners on test put on a signal willy nilly, then a car has slowed, this now confuses the learner because they think "oh is he stopping for me" the stopping car thinks "well come on then pull out"... Then gets bored and speeds up again just as the learner decides to go and it gets sooooo messy. Hope that makes sense.
@Bangandthedirtisgone2 жыл бұрын
@@Grahamvfr So signal but cancel it if a car comes from either direction? I guess you'd tell someone who's coming up behind you you're wanting to pull out for the same reason you'd apply it pulling out from the left? just cos it's the way you're taught to do things? to let others know where you want to go?
@Grahamvfr2 жыл бұрын
@@Bangandthedirtisgone yes sort of, but you don't need to cancel signal for oncoming traffic, as they need to know your moving from a parked to a driving position. My technique is, as my hand releases the handbrake it moves up to the indicator to put it on, as I'm moving off. If you can picture that.
