Another video proving that Ashley is the best content creator in this section of youtube. No over the top reactions, not just blaming one party and leaving it at that. Instead he's actually looking at the clips fairly, encouraging people to think about how the situations could have been handled differently, what both parties could have done to avoid the problem from happening and taking a few moments to give people tips and knowledge that can help them be a safer, more considerate driver themselves. I always thought I was a good driver because I'd never been in an accident and I always paid attention to other road users, but since finding this channel a year or so ago I've made so many small changes to how I drive that have made a big difference. They've made me a calmer driver, less frustrated because I'm reacting to others earlier, thinking more about how to keep traffic flowing for everybody, and better able to spot situations developing before they become a problem that requires an urgent reaction. Keep up the good work!

I understand that some people do this when the roundabout is empty and it doesn't affect anyone. But letting it become habit results in situations like this.
@Cream147player
@Cream147player Жыл бұрын
I mostly do this when there is no one around me and therefore it affects no one. The problem is the majority of people are not at all situational with their driving - they drive the same when the roads are completely empty as they do in rush hour. And so any habits that creep into their driving they will do literally no matter what (including the one in this video where someone has straight lined a roundabout while someone is to their right)
@tin2001
@tin2001 Жыл бұрын
I do it when I'm pedal powered to make my intent clearer - I'm not leaning to make the move, so hopefully look like I'm going straight through. When I'm in the car, the only time I do that is where the roundabout is literally too small - ones added into small suburban streets decades after the houses were built, for example.

For me, the clip with the lorry, the car and the queue for petrol, I think the lorry could’ve been more positive in moving to lane 2 and slowing a bit more to avoid the queue rather than play “follow the leader” and expecting the vehicle in front to not hesitate. One thing you have mentioned before and it has helped me many times, if you see a small mistake from a driver in front expect another to follow
@46rrodriguez
@46rrodriguez Жыл бұрын
I would disagree. The lorry driver did well. First of all it's not easy for the lorry the change the lanes suddenly. Secondly the driver in front could swerve into the lorry path after realising the mistake. It's not wise if in the front is some kind of hazard on the road and the vehicles behind unaware of danger will blast around it. The lorry driver blocked the right lane to sort out the issues in the front then all could process safely
@samsara3694
@samsara3694 Жыл бұрын
@@46rrodriguez Exactly this, when you have a vehicle in front that looks indecisive you have to modify your actions accordingly. If I were on my motorcycle I would have slowed down, taken stock of my escape route vs their further potential action, then accelerated past keeping to the right. Can't do that in a big lorry!
@smilerbob
@smilerbob Жыл бұрын
@@46rrodriguez Apologies, my brain quite often thinks faster than my fingers can type. Of course it is difficult for the lorry to change lane’s suddenly which is what I was trying to allude towards but it seems to have come across wrong. I was talking about moving to lane 2 sooner on the roundabout but also keeping a distance so the stop wasn’t as harsh or sudden. This would, in my humblest of opinions, possibly caused less “rabbit in headlights” response from the vehicle in front but also preventing the situation getting worse by a sudden lane change from the vehicle in front. I dislike my brain when it does this but something I have got used to over the years and apologies for the confusion Take it easy out there 👍

@David-sw2fn
@David-sw2fn Жыл бұрын
I also worry that it’s a mentality embedded by the company. So many jobs to do, so much stress, that the drivers don’t give an inch and it leads to this behaviour. I think it’s come to the point where companies should automatically receive a separate fine for any offences committed by one of their drivers - and be banned from passing this onto the driver. Companies need to start taking responsibility. This law would also apply to any “self-employed” staff operating in the company name. Of course the driver might just be a four letter word representing a feature of the male anatomy.

That is a terrible, and dangerous overtake from the ambulance! Our friend Chris Martin would have something to say about that one 😂
@douglasreid699
@douglasreid699 Жыл бұрын
from the ambulance point of view, the car in front of them has slowed and is stopping to let them by. for the ambulance to stop behind that car and then make the decision to overtake or wait for them to move more out the way so its safe to pass them is dangerous as it takes them time to get back up to speed as a heavy van. they choose to make the overtake with the momentum they had and hoped the sirens would warn who is round the bend they are there. Chris Martin has said that they must not pass on solid white lines but when a car panics and pulls over they dont have the time to explain to the driver why they cant overtake them so he himself will overtake as safely as he can even though its in a dangerous position crossing a solid white line. the ambulance did its overtake before the solid white line. what would you have done if you were in the driving seat of the ambulance?

I think the ambulance driver made the best of things. It's hard when you need to get around quickly and everyone is getting in your way by slowing down in front of you in stupid places. Coming to a stop on a no-overtaking section before a blind bend is spectacular stupidity by the car driver. Drivers need better education on assisting emergency vehicles. If there is an emergency vehicle behind you, you should stay at speed until you find an obvious overtaking opportunity. Then, AND ONLY THEN, you slow to permit the overtake.
@RushfanUK

People panic or because they are terrible at observation don't even see the emergency vehicles behind them, over the years I've had I think 5 times where I've pulled in having seen an emergency vehicle on blues and twos coming up behind and the vehicle behind me has overtaken me and by doing so gone right into the patch of the emergency vehicle, 3 of them were van drivers, it's a testament to the driving skills of the emergency services that none of them ended in a crash.

At 9:44 with the lorry pulling out of the layby on the dual carriageway. 1.This is one reason why when approaching a similar situation, I will consider moving to Lane 2, just for an extra safety margin 2. If a vehicle in the layby wishes to pull out, my move to Lane 2 can create that opportunity for them. Dependent on other traffic in Lane 1 of course. 3. Same technique for vehicles waiting to emerge onto a dual carriageway from a side road with little or no acceleration lane. If I can move to Lane 2 on approach, it can make the emerging vehicle's life so much easier. Often when I do this, drivers behind will also pick up on this and do the same 4. It's as well to remember that dual carriageways have extra hazards compared to motorways, even though they are often both with the same 70 mph speed limit. 5. Wish they would build proper rest areas off dual carriageways and not just some short little layby a mere inches away from a live lane.

Hi Ashley, I am quite certain the driver of the first car, passing the cyclist did not 'think' they were overtaking anybody!, if they thought at all it was that they were avoiding an obstacle. This concept is consistent with my general understanding of human behaviour in the most people's perceptions are preconditioned by their attitudes and opinions, in particular the failure to observe all other road users just as fragile humans worthy of the same consideration offered to ones own family. Such attitude simply become automatic and habitual and as such are very difficult to correct. It is much harder to unlearn a 'bad' habit than it is to learn a new one!. Cheers, Richard.

I'm not sure I agree with that assessment, because the overtake they did only put themselves in danger, not the cyclist. You can see that they actually were leaving the cyclist a decent amount of space before they had to move back over when they went over the ridge. I think the problem is actually much simpler than that. Too many drivers simply don't think. They handle situations on autopilot and because they don't think, they don't change their behaviour to the specifics of the present situation. This drivers default response to a cyclist will have been "if I cannot see a car coming towards me, I overtake the cyclist". They couldn't see a car approaching, so they overtook the cyclist. The fact that there was a crest approaching wouldn't have even crossed their mind. I've ridden motorbikes for most of my life, and the first thing I was ever taught was to watch the driver and the car, and you see this kind of autopilot behaviour all the time. You watch somebody make a lane change and you see that they turn their head towards their mirror, flick the indicator on as they start to move, and go in to the new lane. They've performed the action of mirror, signal, maneuver but it's on autopilot. They've turned towards the mirror, but haven't actually looked in it, they've indicated not because they're thinking about telling other motorists what they're about to do, but because it's their default response, and then they change lane whether it was safe to do so or not. Too many drivers go through all sorts of maneuvers on autopilot, only reacting to the most obvious stimuli, the kind of things that are so common that they don't require any conscious thought. Perfect example for me is the SMIDSY at junctions. For years I've ridden a BMW1200GS, this is a big bike, with an upright riding position. Mine is painted in bright red, my riding gear is canary yellow, and I'm 6'3" tall, so I'm very visible, both because for a motorbike I have a big profile from every angle, and because the colours stand out against any background. At least once every couple of months I'll have somebody pull out infront of me at a junction, when I've been watching them and have seen them turn their head in both directions and look right towards me. Every time it's the same response, "Sorry Mate I Didn't See You". I'm certain it's because their autopilot reaction when pulling up to a junction is "turn your head left and right, look for approaching cars, and pull out if no cars are seen". It doesn't matter how visible the motorbike is, because it's not what they're looking for, because their autopilot response is only checking for cars because cars are the most common thing they see. Too many drivers simply don't change their behaviour in response to anything that is unexpected, or different, or less common.

@@mackemforever There's a lot to agree with there but regarding whether the cyclist was at risk or not, two points: the driver may have instinctively swerved to avoid a head-on, thus taking out the cyclist; also, as a cyclist, you really don't want to be right next to a high-speed head-on collision - physics is likely to get you involved in some way or another.
@jameshoward2738
@jameshoward2738 Жыл бұрын
Yep, I've said the same thing before. They passed the cyclist there because that's where the cyclist (obstacle) was when they got to it. They wouldn't consider an "overtake" there, because they can't see well enough. The hardest part is getting drivers to realise that passing a cyclist is an overtake.

@@mackemforever Hi Mack, thank you for such an observant and thoughtful response, you are clearly one of the more sensible cohort of road users and your reference to what you observe is cogent. Much of it alludes to our habits of perception, when I stared riding motorbikes on the road I was so afraid of getting hurt and so suspicious of car drivers I could not stop watching them, every open crossroads with a car waiting I would come up with my heart in my mouth, until I could actually see the driver looking at me!. Luckily very few of them stuffed me up!, always because they did not see me. There is a subtle difference I find between looking and seeing, what I learned to do was just keep my eyes open and keep looking around not for anything not at anything, just pick up on what is there. It seem that a lot of other people for one reason or another only look for things that they have thought of, behaviour directed by prescription not by description. This habitual mind-set can cause significant problems and incapacitate a person when confronted by any unfamiliar situation they are not prepared for. I do agree that not actually thinking at all is far too common!. Now that I am quite a lot older if not any wiser I still operate an observe first then think then act, hoping all the while that my autopilot will know when to stamp on the brakes, this has saved me a couple of times in the last year or so when I have started to pull out of a junction when a car was coming, I only saw it the second time I looked left as I started to move, the last time I actually stopped before I was really aware of what I had seen!. I still won't take that for granted though, I am always waiting to stuff up!, just because I have driven nearly one million miles without hurting anybody else does not mean it cannot happen. The learner jumping the lights reminded me of a time i was supervising a learner who did just that but by tailing the car in front across (when that car should have stopped as well). Not being a driving school car i didn't have the physical capability of braking. So when i realised she was going for joining in the the beat-the-lights game i told her to stop. By the time she responded we were in the junction, and by braking belatedly she opened a gap that made the situation worse It seemed to me at the time that I had made the situation worse. In hindsight i should have given her earlier advance prompting to be ready to stop. Given my mistake on early approach, I have wondered since what I should have done upon realising her intention only after it was to late to stop. How would you handle such a situation? At some point it maybe it actually becomes safer to carry on...

I think given the circumstances you did the right thing, telling her to stop as soon as it was clear she was going to run the red light, even if it resulted in her stopping in the middle of the junction, it's only in hindsight you can see that stopping her earlier or later would result in a 'better' outcome. On the plus side it's taught you to be more aware of your students approaching lights so you can try tell if they're in follow the leader mode or are actually paying attention. IME most drivers aren't aware that we have no more exemptions than any other road users when it comes to solid lines, we can only cross them in the same circumstances as other road users. We are trained to hold back when approaching vehicles where there are solid white lines and turn off sirens, however some cars (albeit well meaning) will stop in the most inappropriate places, then we have to make a decision on how best to make progress. It's never ideal, which is why we all wish there was more education for drivers on how best to respond when seeing blue lights behind you.

Several times a year he would get to the end of the hedge, look behind to reverse and there would be a car in the middle of the road with the bonnet touching the windscreen. I have to disagree on the ambulance overtake. He was out ready for an overtake, still behind the vehicle to be overtaken, but he held back in that position and didn't begin to move move past the car he was overtaking until his view of the road opened out and he could see the cam car reacting to him. If he had found that he couldn't pass he'd preserved space to his left to move back into. That's actually a pretty standard 'blues and twos' technique - stay out so that vehicles ahead can see you and your intent, but don't commit to the move until you know that it can be executed safely. Note, he didn't begin the actual overtake until he could see lateral movement of the oncoming cam car moving to the side. If the cam car had been a bit slower on the uptake my bet is that we would have seen him slide back behind the car ahead.

[there is a large works depot on the other side of the road, so exiting traffic turn left onto the dual carriage, then immediately turns right [the same as the the turning car in this vid] It is just as dangerous trying to join the road from the works depot because it is on a bend and on the brow of a hill [when you pull out you need to go from a standstill to join motorway speed traffic within about 50ft where you cannot see the traffic coming on the dual carriageway] Then it is dangerous again to do the u-turn [as shown in this clip] via the right turn filter lane because you are trying to cross the main trunk road across the South-coast of England At rush hr it is possible to have to wait up to 15 minutes in the filter lane for a gap to do the u turn. [the next junction to turn around is 14 miles away] The story goes that this large company moved into the site about 60years ago because the highways agency reported that they were going to build a roundabout on the dual carriage to make this are safe, Then after they moved in and set up their depot the highways then refused to build the roundabout unless the company paid them to do it. ….. The company couldn’t afford it, the roundabout never got built and there has been a 60year history of bad accidents here ever since.

Pretty sure the "UFO" at 5:30 is a drone being controlled by the guys in one of the two cars. Are there drones that can travel that fast or keep close to the cars in some way?

I thought it might be drone at first but it's moving very oddly and then it just disappears off to the side. It looks like it's been added on top of the video for whatever reason.
@gunnern1

There are drones capable of keeping up with F1 cars, so normal highway speeds should be easy with the correct drone. It seems the "disappearing" moment is simply the drone changing direction out towards the forest, quickly becoming "too small" (too far away) for the camera to see.

World record speed for a drone: 179 mph. An off the shelf DJI Inspire II drone that you could go out and easily buy tomorrow: 70 mph. Drones specifically built for racing commonly hit 90 - 100 mph, some more.

I've seen a van halfway up a traffic sign on a pedestrian refuge. Same old story: rising gradient, low sun, wet road, parked vehicles just before the island meaning cars have to slalom round the obstacle, and driver probably going too fast and not paying attention.

In the first clip for dead ground, I wonder if these should always be marked with double solid white lines? Of course I realise that sight lines will be better the higher you sit but surely better to err on the side of caution? Signs warning of dead ground aren't always enough.

s, that should be double whites (or yellows, here) amusingly, both US and UK put the yellow lines on the driver's left and the white lines on the driver's right.

@@kenbrown2808 Ah yes, when I wrote my post, I was actually thinking about the North American equivalent of double yellow lines down the centre (center) of a two way road as compared to the UK's double white lines. And yes, every time I see the UK's double yellow lines for parking restrictions, I think of the centre double yellow lines in the USA and Canada. I do like the North American system of using yellow lines for two way roads and white lines to mark lanes going in the same direction, such as on freeways and one way streets.

With regards to the ambulance at 6:51, I am split on this one and as you can tell by the post being a day late, something I have been thinking about before posting It appears the car has slowed right down to let the ambulance pass (personally I would have stopped further back if I was allowing an ambulance to pass there or carry on faster until a better section of road) and it also appears the ambulance wasn’t committing fully and ready to stop if needed. Obviously the further into the overtake the risk increases but given the speed of the other car it was the lesser of the worst situations. It does highlight of course the necessity of everyone to drive to the speed you can see as you never know what is around the bend in front of you…vehicle, animal or fallen tree I wonder if Chris Martin has a view on this?

I think I'm more sympathetic for the last one given it's a curve to the left. If they just defaulted to steering straight to go past the bus's last seen location, there was a risk they could have went offside into oncoming traffic, so they tried to keep a little left steering angle on, but too much to get around the bus. Some people can have heightened sensitivity to light and changes in light and still be perfectly safe and legal to drive the other 99.999% of the time, and the rarity of it catching them out may be why they don't have a rehearsed reaction to it, like having sunglasses pre-unfolded on the dash or muscle memory for lowering the sun visor, and of course it could be a new (to them) car so they didn't have it for long enough to be able to just put their hand to the sun visor without looking or know how much steering angle is needed to get around stuff without looking at it and adjusting accordingly, and it could be wider than their previous car too, all which would combine to this awful situation where they suddenly need to drive blind briefly, and only in the second pocket of sunlight if their interior mirror blocked the first as they came around the left hander towards the sun, when they won't have had time to acclimatise to the change in brightness before reaching the bus.

8:20 Not in this situation, because those are chevrons surrounded by a solid white line. However, if they're just about to cone it off but haven't quite succeeded in completely blocking entry to the carriageway, and it's safe for me to continue, I absolutely will take advantage of the little victory. I would be hyper aware of workers, although they shouldn't be anywhere near a carriageway that hasn't been completely shut, and verification has been received that no more vehicles are able to proceed.

The petrol station/McDonald’s combination there is notorious for that exact issue. Terribly designed junction, almost always over capacity. It’s also not clear to newcomers what lane they should be in, as most are unmarked. A little patience on it goes a long way.

8:35 Section 14 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 details how and why a traffic authority closes roads. Paragraph 1 of Section 16 of the same act reads "A person who contravenes, or who uses or permits the use of a vehicle in contravention of, a restriction or prohibition imposed under section 14 of this Act shall be guilty of an offence." So yeah, probably should do that when there's road closed signs out, like there are in the clip.

~1:00 - It you're in lane 2, to "let traffic in lane 1 out" you have to pretty much stop, thus delaying anyone following you, so there's a "greater good for a greater number" factor in whether you cede or use your priority. We can't see who, if anyone, is following the cammer here. ~6:55 - Yes, the ambulance driver presumed he would get deviations from other traffic in both directions. I'm pretty sure @ChrisMartinEMS will agree. ~10:00 - I saw that one coming before the cammer braked, never mind the crasher he caught on camera!

Looked to me like the car the ambulance was overtaking wasn't particularly cooperative until the situation forced it - though the ambulance driver possibly should have read the situation better but sometimes it is difficult when other people are late and unpredictable in reaction to emergency vehicles - I see far too many people who'll pull out of a junction for instance, when they should have seen the emergency vehicle coming from miles off, then panic brake when they notice it after pulling out often causing an obstruction for the emergency vehicle.

@@Rroff2 Agreed. That's one of the reasons why I am a big fan of wig-wags; they show up in mirrors from 2 miles away. That said, there was one time, whilst I was still learning, I was placed in a horrible situation, as I was passing the first exit on a roundabout just as a fire appliance on that road activated 2-tones. I actually cleared the junction, then held speed to see which way he was going. The situation was resolved as he took the exit that put us on reciprocal courses. As I say, I was still learning, and had no idea what my best action was.

Wow. What a collection. At 08:37 you can clearly see the cone-dodgers have driven over a chevron area bounded by a solid white line. It's not an emergency so that's illegal. And, as Ashley says, highly dangerous for any workers on the roadway. Hopefully a lesson learned for viewers: do what the cammer did instead!

The clip 8:37 where the traffic was being diverted. I work on the roads (at night) and there wouldn't be anybody working on the road up ahead. not until it is fully closed for safety reasons or an enclosed part of the road for people to work. Only then are the works traffic allowed on site and they have to get onto the closed part of the road through a works access put there by the TM (Traffic Management) as what they are doing here. Having said that, where they are pulling back onto the road, they are running over chevrons which they shouldn't be doing and also too close to the TM who are putting the cones out and which is making it dangerous to them, so yes they are wrong.

With the cones directing off the dual carriageway, I think many will have rejoined, as the cones stopped too early. We assume all traffic should leave, but it was not clear enough. Did they run out of cones? Or leave space for the construction vehicles to join? Buses, small, difficult to spot, especailly if distracted, perhaps with a phone?
