Managing risk and using the road accordingly is the main skill we need to utilise to keep a safe. If we're really good at this, we can stop collisions from happening, even though it might not be our fault whatsoever.

To be fair to the van driver, it is actually a good idea to go to the motorcycle first and hit the kill switch to turn the engine off, when a motorcycle is on its side it can leak petrol that could be ignited by the spark plug and cause an even worse situation. For information the kill switch is a red switch usually on the right hand side of the handlebars and will instantly switch off the engine and all electrics.

Maybe the van driver is biker too. We all know that any biker's first question is "Is the bike okay?". Good advice from wigan er. If you're not familiar with bikes, it's probably best to just hit the kill switch then leave the bike alone. They're often heavier than they look and can be tricky to lift after a fall. They can roll away as the front wheel contacts the road, or worse if the engine it still running and the rear wheel touches down.

Yup, rule number one is to always switch the bike off first, not just because it could combust, but it'll most certainly be in gear, if anybody catches that moving wheel, they're losing limbs. Or decide to take it's own ride away, lol. Getting to the biker a few seconds earlier isn't going to help them in the slightest, unless you're a fully trained medical professional of course.

To be fair with that van driver right at the end, that crash was at pretty low speed and getting to the bike first is pretty important. If it's still running and on its side like that, there's a fairly decent chance fuel could leak out and catch on fire, which would have made that situation far worse.

Lesson for bikers that I learnt the hard way, it’s vital to keep on practicing emergency stops rather than experiencing them on the road. Practicing the squeeze technique rather than the grab (a natural instinctive response) makes it far safer with great results.

Right off the bat with that very first clip, before anything happened I immediately thought the cammer is driving way too fast down that empty left lane. There could also have been pedestrians crossing between stationary vehicles, rightly or wrongly and it's up to car drivers to take this into consideration. Basic principle: Any time you are merrily cruising down an empty lane and you have an adjacent lane that is much slower or stationary, be very aware and keep your speed down no matter how "chuffed" you feel cruising past everyone. This also applies when the other lane is oncoming slow / stationary and not only traffic in your direction.

Saw a similar video yesterday, with the title '' Who's at fault''. I suggested that they should have slowed and approached with cation given the lane of stationary traffic at a junction, with a van creating a blind spot. Got instead numerous commenters lecturing me about the ''highway code'' and ''right of way'', ''the incident was entirely the turning cars fault''. So, lets throw caution to the wind and read the Highway Code... Not the road.

@@mikewade777 But you forget that having the dashcam gives the driver immediate right of way and absolves all responsibility for their own actions 😉 In all seriousness though I really do feel in situations like this the insurance companies should give some responsibility to the cammer for not slowing down. Last clip: As a biker myself, one thing you never do is panic and pull the front brake hard! Especially in wet conditions. If he'd just let off the front brake he could have easily steered around the van and this would have been a non-event. I know it's easy to say from my armchair but like I say I'm a biker and have actually done this so I'm not just talking out of my arse, it's from 20 years experience. He should have two hands on the handlebars at all times, no matter the weather conditions. You never know when you're going to hit a pot hole or anything that could turn the bars suddenly, always use two hands. Also, when passing parked cars, junctions or anything that can suddenly pull out/door open etc always cover the front brake ready to stop. In this scenario I would have been decreasing speed for two reasons, firstly the car parked on the left with brake lights on, what's it going to do? Secondly the van to the left, is it parked and unloading etc or does it want to pull out and if so, has it seen me? If you're already decreasing speed then braking is made that much easier, a dab of the brake and steer around the van and all is good. Let's hope he's learnt a lesson from this.

you are right a panic braking caused him to fall. Every biker should be familiar with own bike and practising every kind of scenario in every conditions in advance to avoid any incidents . If you look at many dash cam footage videos the empty lane at a junction crash is common. It is the speed differential to zone of vision which tends to create the situation and you cannot suddenly brake hard to avoid the collision as rear end collision then occurs. If you gradually slow down on approach to very slow you this sccenario accident never happens to you.

With the final clip, the van driver did the best thing: dealt with the biggest danger, it's the first thing to be done in any first aid situation relating to any vehicle, especially a bike. The killswitch is made easy to access for a reason and he dealt with it. First rule of first aid, make the scene safe. But absolutely, in an urban environment, always both hands on, especially since the risk is a lot higher due to the abundance of hazards. I've done something similar in my 125 days, didn't come off but DEFINITELY nearly did, a pure miracle I saved it

It's clips from viewers and Ash like these that have made me (I think) a safer road user. Risk management is a big factor to the way I ride my bicycle. Safety over speed. I still make the odd error in judgement, missing a pedestrian that is crossing, target fixating etc. But these happen less often than before. As Ash says, "you can read the story" a lot of times tell tale signs happen before an increase in risk which can help you avoid it being an incident.

On the last clip, what van driver did with the bike, was what he should do first. A bike on the ground, with the engine on, is a risk of fire or if it is still on gear, it may start rollind around and injure everybody on the scene. That is what we learned on ADR and first aid courses to do, eliminate other hazards first, before we focus on the injured people. They already have what they have, one or two minutes won't make a differrence. We don't want more injuries.

I feel that the postie was holding back due to the black van waiting to turn off the road To roll forward would also have encouraged those behind to do likewise and result in blocking the crossing. It’s quite possible that he could see more vehicles behind the cammer. If I was the cammer I would also have held back to allow the van to clear the road as I had seen the lights changing and possibly the build up of traffic behind me.

At 4:04: It's also very common for pedestrians to start crossing as soon as they see vehicles stopping at a crossing and not wait for their green man pedestrian light. Combined with the fact that such pedestrians also don't bother checking all round for any other traffic that might not be stopping (including filtering two wheelers between the lanes) and you have the recipe for an accident similar to the one with the mobility scooter...or worse. Personally I always look all round and between the lanes even when I'm crossing with the green man signal in my favour. I even check for the possibility of vehicles coming the wrong way on a one way street.

Seeing a few people have a go at the mobility scooter and yeah, he is off the mark quick, but the amber light on the traffic lights comes on well before the driver of the car makes the decision to run the red light. For those needing a brush up on their Highway Code, Amber means “prepare to stop unless it’s unsafe to do so”. The cammer was keeping a safe distance, so upon seeing the amber light, the driver of the car who hit the mobility scooter should have checked his mirrors and prepared to stop; not run the light!

I agree that the postal van in that mobility scooter clip really played a part in that collision. It reminds me a lot of behaviour see on my walk to work where I have to cross at a roundabout. When I'm on the middle island, it's amazing how many people in lane 2 will put themselves into a position where I can't see past them (fair enough, if their intent is to get onto the roundabout quickly) and then wave me across, sometimes even as traffic is whizzing past them to their left! Someone less patient or more susceptible to pressure could easily get killed by this behaviour. Note to drivers: if you want to let a pedestrian across, stay far back enough that they have a view of both/all of the lanes. And if that feels disruptive, carry on to your give way line and DON'T wave them across at all. Stopping 5ft from the give way line, then waving the pedestrian across - particularly if you're in lane 2 - is absurdly dangerous.

A couple of other things I noticed with that clip: The post office van was not giving way to the mobility scooter. The car in front of them was indicating to turn right & waiting for the cammer (& maybe cars behind) to pass before they could make their turn. The post office van had stopped to leave the crossing clear. That usually gets spotted & acknowledged with a 'well done' on this channel. The lights did not stay amber for very long but the car which went through them on red was not easing off in preparation for them to change. If lights are green when you first see them, they could change to amber at any moment.

I understand the frustration of the black car behind the tractor, that roundabout was wide enough for two vehicles side by side, but additionally a tractor should pull over and let traffic by rather than just hold everyone up. I had a similar situation today, a car driving at 70 in a 100kmph area, holding up a whole lot of traffic, then when it turned onto the motorway slip road, it took a position across both lanes determined to not let anyone pass.

A couple of things to note on the first clip: - That pedestrian crossing and the position of the vehicles in the centre may have confused the viewer, making them think it was a traffic light controlled junction. If that was the case there are other clues that would have helped them work out it was not. - It looks like the queued traffic is changing the priority, letting the two side roads go. Whenever anyone does that we should always be wary. Definitely slow down until passed, and pay more attention when taking the opportunity. - The position of the car on the left might have helped. It’s got it’s nose stuck out. My thoughts would have been “why hasn’t it gone?”

This is a tricky one. I’d probably have been a little slower for sure, though it’s debatable whether this would have avoided a collision altogether. Utterly abysmal driving from the van driver. If they had wanted to force their way out, then go half way, look and creep - don’t just go across. I agree a key issue here is actually the jaguar from the left junction. In honesty that vehicle would have taken up a fair bit of my situational processing capacity here. The front is sticking out into the road and they’re giving off a strong vibe they will pull out. The speed of the cammer is probably a clear reflection that they are not giving way. Maybe even that’s a message that they’re trying to send out. I suspect that this could be distracting from what’s happening on the right. So I have a lot of sympathy with the cammer. The van driver, on the other hand, should not be on the roads.

Councils and the Highway Authority don't seem to have learned the lesson that crossings need to be put a decent distance from junctions. Aside from the possibility of a controlled crossing looking like a controlled junction, there's also the cognitive load associated with emerging from a side road and then immediately having to access a crossing - better to space the two tasks out.

The first one is very similar to the only accident I've ever had. A car pulled out of a car park right into the road i was on, and a row of parked cars blocked his sight of me. I approach situations like this with a lot more caution now, and a few years ago managed to brake in time to prevent a similar issue in a back street with parked cars on both sides.

Mobility scooters are a tricky one, since some are actually road legal or illegal to drive on the pavement depending on capability/settings. If said scooter can do over 4mph then its technically illegal to drive on a pavement unless said scooter is set to limit its top speed to 4mph. If a scooter/chair can do more then 4mph they need to be registered like any other road vehicle (they get givent a reg like a car, but do not need to display it) and the owner should have insurance, most do not and its never made clear to people that it should be taken out when buying these things or where you stand legally when it comes to there use. (insurance is usually about £70 a year and covers liability and your typical motor insurance stuff). by the way the scooter moved, i wouldn't be surpised if its was set above 4mph, meaning she shouldnt have been on the pavement and could be held accounable for the accident and possibly be done for dangerous driving.

Great video, on the first clip, I also wondered whether concetration was lacking a bit too, in any case, good one to keep thinking about when approaching busy intersections like this is C.O.A.S.T. I also particularly liked the point in the second clip about stopping adjacent to a passing place - I see this far too often where people seem to think they need to cross onto the opposite side of the road to enable vehicles to pass. Top draw video!

Opening clip - the Dashcam gave us a slightly different view to the driver as it was positioned further to the left. What we were able to see was, perhaps, at a better angle for us to take note of that White Taxi (?) before the Viewer could see it........ NOT that I'm defending the Cammer here as the Speed was a tad on the high side in this situation. Excellent analysis (all clips) as we've become accustomed to. Stay safe out there.

Some people just drive at one set speed. Not slowing for danger at all. I wonder if those insurance black boxes can pick this out by averaging it all out compared to others drivers. This could then be fed back to the drivers that never slow down much for certain junctions. And they could improve their driving or face higher insurance. This idea would save lives. Get the message out Ash if you approve. I would like to see a video on just how good the black boxes are and what improvements they could have. Such a vid would save lives and help the industry!

With all respect Ashley, you did not mention the dark van in the mobility scooter clip. It played an important part in this incident in my opinion. Your thoughts?

I don't know many bikers that ride one handed around town. Maybe OK on wide A roads, duals or motorways, but the place where you want maximum control is around town, especially when it's wet. One panic grab later and the laws of physics decide where you're going and if you're stopping before heading under a wheel.

I was interested in your comments on the tractor clip. I have a clip from a couple of days ago where an artic was approaching a roundabout and the following car was clearly planning to pass on its right at the roundabout. The lorry took up a position straddling the two lanes and blocked the car behind. That same car then moved over to the left clearly trying to get down the inside. I wasn't sure whether this was good practice by the lorry but you have cleared it up in my mind Ashley. Thanks.

Okay, 3rd clip, mobility scooter time.. Firstly, the grey/black van infront of the Postie had stopped in order to turn right, Postie stops before the crossing to save getting stopped in the crossing if the lights change.. good job Postie. Van however, did not indicate until after he had stopped, tut tut, pointless :) So I don't think it is impatience that causes her to cross, or a wave from the Postie, I think she simply assumed the lights had changed and she could go.. Dumb thing to do, but people do dumb things.. Secondly, that model of scooter is a Kymco on the cusp of Cat 2 and 3, meaning it is small enough to fit in a car (with appropriate back saving hoist lol) but can also do up to 8mph instead of the standard Cat 2s' 6mph.. Odds are, she sped up to the maximum 8mph to cross the road, (which I am also guilty of but I look thoroughly and constantly) in order to lessen the time she was in the danger zone of being on the road. Also that scooter does come with a hand brake, but they don't work well, meaning the Deadmans switch is basically all the braking capabilities you have, which usually kick in between 1.2 and 1.6 seconds after 'throttle' release, with no instant 'emergency' brake to save the user being thrown out of their seat, or jarred forward at 5+mph. In short, braking is a slowing to under 2mph and then a stop.. so there was nothing she could have done to not hit the car, that was inevitable at that moment.. she could have swerved but that could have made issues worse.. but more likely she had tunnel vision fixation on the opposite kerb to ensure she could get onto it safely and quickly.

At around 7:34, I could be wrong but to me that roundabout does actually look wide enough to accommodate both the tractor and the black car. I'm not sure though which exit the tractor was intending to take and hence not sure which lane it should have actually been in. But as Ashley pointed out, the tractors positioning on the approach was very misleading. I also can't tell if the tractor had any indicators and I doubt the tractor driver was in a position to give hand signals whilst controlling such a big machine on a roundabout. However the black car would have been wise to hold back and just see what the tractor did next.

The first clip.....well, a queue could a clue that there's either an obstruction or the driver in front is letting someone out, plus an impatient driver in the queue could suddenly pull out in front of you. This is what happens when you bomb through a green light. Simply put, slow down until it's safe.

Tractors pulling huge trailers are a major issue in the area where I do most of my driving. The trailers are the same size as that of the largest lorry. Most of the encounters I have with them, they are not moving around the farm. These vehicles are being used for haulage. I regularly get stuck behind them for miles with no chance of overtaking. The longest being through four counties. I would rather have a lorry on the road than a farm tractor and trailer. The HMRC should be more proactive in stopping this, farmers get red diesel for use on the farm not running haulage businesses. The motorcyclist in the last clip was fully responsible for what happened after the van pulled out. Speed wasn't the issue because they never slid on the road after coming off. Had they had both hands on the handlebar they wouldn't have fallen over when they stopped, which they may not have had to. The van stopped leaving space for the bike to go around. It was a non-event that their bad riding turned into an incident. They never hit the van, they damaged the bike all by themselves.

Yeah the flat bed truck pulling out in front of the motorcyclist isn't exactly the smallest vehicle in the world, see how the vehicle can seriously blend into its background despite being large and not stand out depending on its colour and it's background especially through a parked vehicle.

The first clip is the prime example of an awful driver, just because you have right of way doesn't mean its safe to just plough on, slow down, stop yammering right at a busy junction and you would'nd have had a crash. Its the same as the idiots who think you only need your lights on when you need to see, its about being seen and I can guarantee this driver is exactly like that due to how oblivious you have to be to steam roll through a jammed junction

Motorcyclist was riding dreadfully. 100% his fault, he didn't make himself visible, wasn't in full control of the vehicle due to only one hand on the handlebars and was not driving for the road conditions. Yes technicially the van driver pulled out on him, but he did so cautiously and had little choice with the poor parking of the vehicle on the left. Had the motorcyclist been in full control and driving slower, he may have been able to either stop, or go round the front of the vehicle.

There was a little should I? shouldn't I ? from the car driver there but the white car is mostly through the lights when they turn red. (2.28) The last time that driver could see those lights they were amber. At that point the mobility scooter should still be on the pavement. Preparing to move off. She is not. She is in the centre of the road and hurtling towards the car apparently oblivious to its presence. There doesn't seem to be any attempt to stop by its operator either until she hits the car. I would go as far to suggest that the car was responsible for bringing the scooter to rest rather than the operator. This is not the driver's fault in my opinion.
