Ashoka the Great, probably the one Indian king we all have studied in schools, How great he was, How he planted trees, How he converted to Buddhism after witnessing the cruelty of Kalinga war.
What if I tell you it’s all A BIG LIE?
The evidence Ashoka’s own inscriptions tell a completely different story. I think it’s time to dig out the facts and counter the lies we have been told for generations.
The story we have been told is Ashoka the great Emperor invaded a tiny kingdom Kalinga. But the people of Kalinga were not ready to surrender either. So the Kalinga war happened which resulted in the death of 1,00,000 people which is a huge number of population 2000 years back. So Ashoka felt really guilty and converted to Buddhism and practiced nonviolence for the rest of his life.
This is the story we have been told for years.
This is the story which is still being taught in schools.
We even have movies based on the story.
But how far it is TRUE?
It’s high time we uncover the actual story of Ashoka based on the inscriptions and evidence we have instead of making a fake story.

I am a Theravada Buddhist from Sri Lanka. According to Sri Lankan books, he became a Buddhist after the Kalinga War. He propagated Buddhism, so he was called Dharmashoka. Ashoka Chandashoka Dharmashoka .... It is mentioned in the books that Ashoka did not wars after becoming a Buddhist. I'm not saying I'm 100% right. .. I have little knowledge of Indian historical sources. Which Indian source mentions that Ashoka fought wars after the Kalinga war......................... Mahindra Thero, the son of Emperor Ashoka, brought Buddhism to our country. In ancient times, the people of Sri Lanka called India as Jambudhveepa. According to our books, Emperor Ashoka built 84000 Buddhist temples all over Jambudhveepa. Buddhism was given to many Buddhist countries in the world Emperor Ashoka. He is a hero to Theravada Buddhists.

Why did he have to destroy the Kalinga (BlackLinga) empire? Just to promote Buddhism and appease Bhikkus, He tried to destroy the Linga worship religion which is from Kalinga and Telinga (Trilinga) Desam. The Kalingas were a very rich empire with rich trade history with South East Asia for thousands of years. Any Indonesian and Malaysian always refer to dark or Indian-looking people as Keling. After the Kamboja/Saka/Aryan invasion into India everything changed. The Kalingas fleed to Southeast Asia or Bangladesh, some even migrated to the Hinterlands or South India to save themselves. You see alot of Shaivite temples in the south and also as far as Champa (Vietnam) as they brought the Linga culture with them. Every King was always power-hungry.@@animeworldixr5951

In the book Ashoka Vadan, Emperor Ashoka has been described as very cruel because by showing him cruelty, he wanted to prove that he was initially angry and later became a Buddhist. He gave up his anger. If you want to know the true history of Emperor Ashoka, then Know them from inscriptions not from books

I'm a Buddhist nun from Srilanka and our great historical chronical Mahavamsa has a several chapters dedicated to Ashoka. And I believe most of the historical facts the world know by now are either taken from Ashokan rock edicts or from Mahavamsa. If there are other sources I think you should better mention them in your narrative. It is true that a king has always limitaitons in following parama ahinsa and an emperor is even less capable. However Ashoka contributed a lot for Buddhism by holding the third sangha council since Lord Buddha's passing away and it is as a result of that council that he sent missionaries to seven areas including Srilanka. By this time both his son and daughter had enetered the order pf sangha and Srilanka received both of them, first Maha Mahinda thero his son, along with Buddhism and then hos daughter Sanghamiththa theri with a sapling of the Bodhi tree under which Lord Buddha attained Buddhahood. The countries which received Buddhism from Ashoka still remains Buddhist to this day so unlike the empire of Alexander the great which collapsed soon after his demise the dharma empire of Ashoka the great still remains well intact today. Making him quite close to a chakravarti raja mentioned in Buddhism. (But not completely). P. S - it's better if you include references to your information under the video description.

Hello ..I'm a srilankan and as you all know buddhism is the religion of majority here. Buddist monk called "Mahinda" The son of Ashoka the great came here and established buddhism as a result of 3rd 'dharma sangayana' which was conducted by king Ashoka. And dear Keerthi I think it's not that much fair to judge a great king by some information you collected from various types of resources. There could be so much untold , unwritten stories in history that you probably can't explain in a couple of minute youtube video. It's almost been 2000 years do you think people who had been lived through all those years didn't notice a single thing you say? Don't know whether stories we've been told true or a lie but forever greatfull for bringing buddhism here for the sake of politics or with the thought of spreading buddhism. ps. Be aware before beliving everything that random youtube historians say. This video is filled with lack of information and biased (why I say it's biased ; I've seen hefty amount of people's hate towards king Ashoka for the fact that he converted in to a buddhist. And most of them are hindu people. Can't help with that. Can't change history.Pleas don't hate someone just because they don't belong to the same religion as yours.) I'm amazed of amount of people that compliment these kind of videos without any kind of research . Hope people will do more quality contents.

You can know the history of Emperor Ashoka only from his inscriptions. If you know from Buddhist books then you will be very confused because in Buddhist books he was described as cruel because they want to show that he was cruel and later became Buddhist. In the inscription of Emperor Ashoka, there is mention of his living brothers. You can read in inscription number five which is the inscription of Kalsi.

There will be 2 earthquakes in Alaska ( 7.6 and 7.3) After that children will go missing. It will be Jesus who is coming with promised redemption! Our God has revealed all those details to his prophets right now and He is coming in promised redemption. But governments will say it was UFO. Now you have been told in advance, so do not be deceived. Only God knows the future. Jesus loves you, accept him as your Saviour and be safe! We are in the last pages of the Bible now. What saves us is the faith that Jesus He bled and died on the cross, and he was resurrected three days later. His blood cleansed us from our sins so that we can stand in front of God blamelessly. Believe in what he has done for us with the full heart, confess your sins to him and pray, build a relation with him. Ask him to come into your heart. It is God's grace that saves you. It's nothing that you can do but what he has done for us. No works required. Call upon him as Your Lord and Saviour!(see also Bible, 1 Corinthians 15:1:6)

In the time of Ashoka, Hindus faced terrible oppression. Ashoka aimed to convert everyone to Buddhism, and many of our sacred texts were destroyed by Buddhists. They almost wiped out Hinduism from our land. But in Kalinga, people fought fiercely to keep their beliefs alive. The entire state resisted, even children joining the struggle to defend Hinduism. Later, Sri Sri Adi Shankaracharya emerged, spreading Hinduism's message across the country once more. Against all odds, Hinduism rose again, reclaiming its place in our land.

We all know winner writes the history. Here we heard from our ancestors that Ashoka only stopped the warWhen normal people joined the war with whatever weapon they had. When all men were either dead or captured. River Daya was red with blood. When the whole Royal Family was massacred but the people refused to lose and choose to die with respect because Ashoka was not a human he was a demon. @@kanishkkumar5431 Even if you ignore the video, it is true that normal citizens of kalinga were fighting against ashoka at the end. They didn't even have weapons. That shows the cruelty of ashoka. Fighting against an army is one thing but massacring normal citizens is very very inhumane and cruel thing to do. Who did he want to rule over after killing the citizens? Truth is the level of cruelty that has happened inside india (whether by british or by kings such as ashoka) is on par with hitler's concentration camps. I'm not arguing whether ashoka was already a buddhist or he adopted buddhism later, i dont care about it. None of it changes the cruelty he did. Whole rivers were red with blood during that battle.

The problem with Santani historians is that they are more of "Kathawachak" than historians. No inscription read here as a reference which is an integral part of credibility. 1.Ashoka was a lay budhist before Kalinga war. His father was an Aajeevak and Mauryans were also Buddhist Not Sanatani. 2. Alexander Cunningham was the historian who discovered history of Ashoka. No Indian was aware of such a great emperor. 3. The fact she's trying to say are based on a scripture Ashokawadana not an inscription. If you read Ashokan inscription his teaching ideas prove him to be greatest emperor of all time. But for very obvious reasons since he was a Buddhist so these "Sanatanis" never like him and try to demean him in every possible way. 4. Ashoka was fond of his brothers he made an artificial Hill called "Bhikuna" Pahar for him brother the remains are still there. 5. He sent his daughter and Son for propagation of Dhamma in Srilanka without any violence he spread Dhamma every where such a great king he was. 6. His rock inscriptions, Stupa are rich cultural heritage of India. 7. Just imagine the Sanatanis who were not aware of the existence of great king are now writing fictional stories to prove that he was cruel king??? 8 These Brahmins even called Ashokan pillar as " "Bheem ki Gada" how talented they are.??? The only talent they hv is to prove others evil and hijack the heritage of Buddha.

I am not aware of all the edicts, but knowledge which I got till now is that although Ashoka had kept his sword but he was ready to take it whenever a threat approached. How can we expect a ruler to follow the path of non violence to complete extent ? Either he would have given up his kingdom like Buddha, only then we could imagine that all the violence which he did after convertiong to Buddhism was not ethical ? How can we forget a ruler has two religions, one which he follows personally and other which he has towards his subjects? It's relevant even now. Even if he would have completely discarded the violence, he would have been responsible for the fall of the empire, like Firoz Tughlaq? He is surrounded by both the sides. You will all never spare him. Before blindly following anyone, just have fact check and form your own opinion. History is not that much easy and straight forward as you all are taking it.

Believe in what he has done for us with the full heart, confess your sins to him and pray, build a relation with him. Ask him to come into your heart. It is God's grace that saves you. @@kishorek2272, Asoka ended the wars which Chandragupta Maurya and Brahamana Chanakya started from Magadha. Maha Padmananda (Porus) and the other 8 regional kings in Magadha lost the power because they were trying to stop Alexander the great. Hindus came from Thakshila (Pakistan), and they took the Magadha Kingdom from the people who spoke Prakrit Languages. And then, they have developed new text to make their own history in India. Some stories are older than the evolution of Humans. They have tried to make a founder of Jainism. And they have copied the story of Rama-Panditha in Jataka tale to make a new story to make the Budhha and Avatar of Vishnu. Also, their new stories have tried to adopt the Buddha's teachings. They have destroyed the history of India. But Sri Lankan texts have details about the early Kings in India. Uggasena was the first Nanda king, and he took the power from Kalashoka according to the texts. He was the newphew of Maha Padma Nanda because he married his daughter Dhurdhara. Likely, Chandragupta married Dhurdhara later. Brahamins have tried to Brahamanize a lot of cultures and knowledge systems while trying to change the mindset of normal people.

@@jinkigang No indian king had killed common people except ashoka. Ashoka was a terrorist and tyrant. Kalinga war wasn't a war between two armies. He massacred the common people of the region literally making their rivers red in blood. The only other ones who did similar were muslim invaders and british and hitler. If you want to idolize hitler or ashoka is your wish. By the way, no one is saying anything against buddhism, it is a peaceful religion and everyone respects buddhism. But ashoka was like hitler.

The answer is actually more revealing if you see the situation in Nehru's reign.. After independence, the Indian people knew Ashoka as the King who thought violence was necessary to control a nation.. but you know Nehru (so-called follower of Gandhiji) Nehru wanted the opportunity to reinforce his rule and at the same time get his vote banks from Muslims, Buddhist and other religions alike.. so: 1. He appoints Education Minister Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (also the man who is responsible for NCERT being "Islamically Secular") 2. Dr BR Ambedkar decided on following Buddhism and much popularity wasn't given, so associate that with Hindu Kings like Ashoka.. you get a mix of Boddh Dharma and "Ahimsa Parmo Dharma" ideologies spreading across schools.. As you see.. Politics plays a huge role in determination of what history is being told..😊

A Sri Lankan sinhalese here. Ashoka is revered by us as a great buddhist emperor. There're asura and sura rulers in every faith; occasionally, a country cannot function without violence. It's not possible for a ruler to expand his empire, defend and propagate a faith without violence in those days. Do you believe that the medieval rulers who followed islam and christianity were devout? Did they propagate their faith with ahimsa? I don't think so.

In the 10th year of Emperor Ashoka's reign, royal servant of Ashoka Moggaliputta-Tissa, compiled the "Sariputra Abhidharma . This text was disseminated in a structured form by the group led by Moggaliputta-Tissa. The "Sariputra Abhidharma Sutra" created six major categories and twenty different views, almost completely altering the key aspects of the Buddha teachings on the dependent origination, the Four Noble Truths, the stages of practicing the path to enlightenment, the One Vehicle of the Holy Ones, and even changing concepts such as the Five Aggregates, Six Sense Bases, Six Sense Objects, Six Consciousnesses, the Five Hindrances, and the Thirty-Seven Factors of Enlightenment. The content, sequence, and definitions underwent significant changes.

Instead of imparting stories filled with bloodshed, torture, killings and to focus on narratives that highlight the values of harmony and compassion might have been a more constructive approach.

It looks like you are following negative part of it. Interpretations were changing and want to show new ways to attract people to get fame in society to get awards. You are talking about more than 2000 years back history which was completely contaminated. Refer to the recent history of Gandhiji, Nehruji, can you say who wrote correctly, people are writing as per their wish. Don't waste your time by creating such negative videos. Even you can't judge or find correct things for recent things. Do you know your great grand Father and mother's names. Understand the reality. First understand yourself and your history. Ashoka's hell was an imaginary place for the sinners, It was a concept to improve morality among citizens. 3:27 6) Ashoka's early regime describes the fight among the brothers for the throne and Ashoka's hunger for territory, which we have been taught correctly in our textbooks. It didn't include any sort of torture, just war. 3:20 7) Chandashoka as earlier I mentioned refers to the war hungry Ashoka, brutal in nature (which we have been taught in the textbooks). 7:00 8) Ashoka did release the prisoners of the Kalinga war. 5:13 9) Look at the text carefully it mentions I've been a Buddhist layman for 2 and half years "BUT FOR A YEAR I DID NOT MAKE MUCH PROGRESS" The Kalinga war ended at 261BCE which came first And 260BCE was the date the edict was written in which was a gap for 1 year, this is not particularly a mistake but it does tell us he was Buddhist before the Kalinga war but after it he had finally started acting non violent and became a true Buddhist. 6:23 10) Ashoka didn't kill all his brothers, he defeated most of them and others were killed during the war by common soldiers and not Ashoka particularly. 7:27 11) The hostility is not even present, the lines tell us that god tells ashoka to calm down and apologise so to prevent violence. There is no hostile tone present. 7:57 12) There are no accounts that suggest a war that Ashoka fought or initiated after the Kalinga war. 8:15 13) The Ashokavadna is not corroborative evidence as its a prashasti and much has been exaggerated. And no other historical evidence suggests that Ashoka ordered the killing of Ajvikas 8:35 14) There are no historical evidences that support this legend written in the Ashokavadna and thus is considered a false narrative by historians. mam I believe, this is just a mistake, Kindly reassure your data and sources. There isn't a historical record or inscription that explicitly portrays Ashoka as an evil king. Ashoka is generally regarded as a ruler who underwent a transformation towards a more compassionate and tolerant governance after the Kalinga War. Different historical accounts and interpretations may vary, but the majority view Ashoka as a significant figure in promoting peace and Buddhism. Which historians book have you read as source... We in india, do have a strong tendency of trying to uphold any king who has done something good/bad (though be it a just a segment of life, but not all)and judge the whole character of those kings /personalities from history on that one good/bad,SUCH AN UNDERSTANDING is the result of colonial history text book writers did to brainwash Indians mind&nothing else- WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND THOSE WERE JUST NORMAL FLAWED PEOPLE LIKE US,in most cases more or less flawed as they were kings/queens,etc who conquered their other kingdoms ,some didnt, to secure their position in history and at their present times,WE CANT JUDGE THEM JUST LIKE THAT BECAUSE THE TIMES WERE SO DIFFERENT IN MANY ASPECTS. Thank you Keerthi ji for unfolding incidents of history like this,it's very important we get such real checks from our past ,specially that of of INDIA'S VAST AGE LONG HISTORY. AS INDIANS WE NEED/WANT TO HAVE to get more realisation of how history is- NOT SOME STORY BUT REAL INCIDENTS, AND REALISE THOSE. After reading and trying to realise some incidents of Ashoka here and there(those were not from Indian school textbooks ,but various other articles), personally felt that in practicality there's a good chance that IT COULD'VE TURN OUT THAT ASHOKA WAS OBVIOUSLY A CRUEL king, because or else one cannot have such a spread out kingdom, defeating other strong ones. Also heard about Ashoka killing sushim, the actual crown prince, it would be ideally and ethically wrong. PLEASE DO CONTINUE THIS SPECIALLY FROM OUR INDIAN HISTORY. Much love and strength to you. Thanks again🙏🏻💯❤️
