Nice to catch up with you again Ash and sorry to see you had a tiring tough time there. Myself and my son in law were camped not too far from your second night when we were on our Cambrian way journey which we have now completed and I was pleased to see you still hold those ambitions. It’s definitely the best trail I have done, we did it in 2 short and 2 long sections. I know you wanted tho do it north to south but I do feel south to north could be better. Anyway great to see you out and All the best to you. 🍺👌

Hi from Switzerland. Nice hike but nice strong wind too. I have the Allak 3. I had in the past few situations like you with strong winds, hard strong snow storm etc. The tent had hold it presta good. Something that i can recommend you is buy 3 more poles for the tent. I did it and was very good solution to hold the reallly bad weather. Another tip is if possible try don't set up the tent close the midium or top the hills. At dusk the air thermal currents change abruptly. The cold air descends faster, cooling the rest of the hot air, creating the typical wind tunnel between mountains or hills. If you add a storm, you have the perfect combination of having to dismantle everything and look for a new location as quickly as possible, and if you have to do it at night, you increase the risk of an accident. Cheers 👍

As well as checking the poles check you guy lines that were held down by them rocks incase they got a bit chewed up as you don't want any weakness in them out on future wildcamps.. hope you had a dam good rest once home Ash .. Hi Ash. You probabaly know this, but a MUST HAVE item that it looks like you haven’t got is a set of Delta Ground Anchor tent pegs. The way they are made the more you pull on them, the more they dig n drive down into the ground. They’re chunky, but very very lightweight as made out of a polycarbonate. Get enough for the guylines, 6 in your case? And two extra. Have a gander at them in KZfaq. Truly game changers. Means you can relax with confidence your legs ain’t coming out. Good to see you out in the mountains with the Allak 2 bud. This is also my main tent and would trust nothing less in and around the peaks. I also double pole my allak if I’m expecting some harsh weather, plus after getting caught out in similar weather on the summit of Pen Y Fan, I now always take four long sand/snow stakes which really hold well in softer ground, plus the Easton 9” pegs.. Look forward to Seeing you enjoy the Allak in better weather.. Take care...Cheers Mark 👍
@AshOutdoorsUK11 ай бұрын
Hi mark! Someone else mentioned the double pole thing… how does this work? Do you just put them into the sleeves and wrap the guy line around both sets of poles to keep them in place? Because obviously the clips will only go on one set of poles? And yea, I’ll definitely be taking my delta pegs next time 😅
@thewiltshirewomble11 ай бұрын
@@AshOutdoorsUK hi Ash. The allak sleeves has been designed to take 2 poles. And you just clip alternately across the tent. I also keep half a dozen of those velcro cable ties and just velco the 2 poles together once clipped up. Probaly overkill, but they weigh nothing and i keep them in pocket inside the tent, so i always have them with me. As you’ll know the standard poles are 9mm and you can buy an upgraded 10mm set, but i went for double poling with an extra set of standard 9mm poles. That way i have full redundancy should a pole fail… which wouldn’t be the case if you only have a 10mm set up in the hills. And you can choose to take the extra set or not… hope this helps bud… cheers Mark

tough experience that, been out in similar weather and its more intimidating than it looks on video too. Especially the noise. Hello mate. Yes, you’re right. As I left the tent and took my bag out all the paged out guys flew out and the tent took off. The only thing saving me was the rocks on the remaining guys. What I was getting at was that I think most other tents I own would have broken in the winds. This is only a red label, the black labels poles are thicker. I should have brought my delta ground pegs, and I’ve learned from someone in the comments that you can actually double pole these tents. So I’ll take this trip as a lesson and prepare better next time. Glad you enjoyed, and thanks for watching Ash

@@AshOutdoorsUKI think you were just unlucky with the weather and the reason the tent nearly took off is because of the boggy ground and not the tent itself. Like you said, pretty sure nearly any other tent besides a Soulo would have been destroyed by winds that strong. It’s thanks to the Hilleberg that the situation didn’t get a lot more serious. You’re definitely due a sunny one with glorious views after that, though!

You’re back. Yes!! ‘Mary Poppins does Wales’. That was superb and raw. I waited to watch this, and it was viewed at the top of Hackpen Hill near home, but out in the winds! I’ll let Tilly watch it later unless she already has? Also the links for DD stuff on here are they your affiliate links so you’ll get something from them? As she’s now after both tarp and hammock. And for floor camps what sleep mat was it in this vlog please as that’s gonna be for Christmas, she needs the warmest money can buy. Cheers lovely. 😊

Great video. You dealt with the situation brilliantly. I had a similar situation on Ptarmigan Ridge of Ben Lomond years ago. I was on my back for a few hours at one point with legs in the air acting as a structure inside the tent. Wasn't forecast either. Eventually the tent collapsed and I had to bail at 3am in the dark in high winds and heavy rain. It was a scary situation, but I knew I could make it down and made sure I packed up in advance. I had to tie the tent around my legs so it didn't fly away. These days I don't even bother if winds are forecast for 15+.

This is the one problem I have with Hilleberg's tents, they're not freestanding. Which means this: If you don't do an expert job staking the tent out, guy lines etc (sometimes even if you do!)...... walls collapse. Wind blown rain gets through the vents. Bad things happen. For over $1,000 for this 2 person tent!? It should have been bomb proof, as advertised. They do have the strongest fabric (by FAR) and every tent is hand stitched but...... I just wish they offered more free-standing tent designs. I'd feel a lot better in high, high winds....
@AshOutdoorsUK11 ай бұрын
I agree in part, I was quite gutted about the wind blowing rain up and under the hood and the vents letting water through. Had it been raining the whole night I would have gotten pretty wet 😅 I’m hoping with some better pegs (deltas) and another set of poles I should be sorted for next time 🤞🏼 Thanks for watching Ash

Good times Ash. At least it was a learning experience for you. You can trust the Allak in high winds and always put rocks on your pegs. My MSR Hubba Hubba NX got wrecked in Glen Feshie in high winds so I only use Hilleberg for potentially damaging camps now.

@@AshOutdoorsUK thanks, Ash, are you going to do a ‘what’s in my rucksack’? I use a hilleberg rogan for three seasons (2kg) and a Crux Shadow X2 in winter (2.9kg) and have been considering a side entry tent. The Crux is a tunnel tent with a door at either end and is drum tight - zero flapping in 80mph winds and I cannot see of any side entry tents anywhere. My kit is also as light as I possibly think I can get it but struggle to get below 12kg.
@AshOutdoorsUK11 ай бұрын
@@chrishamilton2527 I may well do a winter kit video, will be interested to do. I don’t like the idea of end entry tents for some reason, prefer to be side on. I’m going tho stick with the two hille’s I have for now. I’m taking an extra set of poles and delta pegs next time for sure 😅
@chrishamilton252711 ай бұрын
@@AshOutdoorsUK same, Ash. My crux is a great tent but I want to go to a side entry; the Rogan has spoilt me. Good idea though to double pole - I’ll have a look at that as well. Pegs, I use 9” Eastern and they are utterly brilliant. I also have 4x of the big yellow deltas …… but only drag them along in winter. Good luck, love your posts, and have a great day.

These videos always amuse me. Pick the right tent for the conditions - which you did. Go to sleep and don't fret - worst case tent gets smashed - but even then it ain't going anywhere. Pull your emergency gear out - so you remain dry and warm - back to sleep - deal with it all later.
