I was born (1955) and bred in Ashton. Moved to Nelson in 1985. Have returned so often till my mum passed 3 years ago. By the way I was used to people calling that alley 'Squeeze bally entry' Great footage, thanks !

We moved away in 1987 when I was 13. We lived at 58 bolton Road, and we then moved into the house next door, being 60 bolton Road. 60 bolton Road was known for being the biggest house on that stretch. They knocked down both 58 & 60 Bolton Road & built 4 houses on the land. There used to be a Bobby on every corner when I was a youngun. You would always see them walking the beat. This may answer why there are kids committing knife crimes. Such a shame about the ashton market. If it wasn't for the old dear with the one sole table keeping it alive, there would be no evidence of it. We went there all the time when I was a kid every single Saturday. It was also the place that the passing fair would rent out when they had the fair ground rides over a weekend. I hope the lady keeps up with the table just to show what it was like with a full car park area of tables back in the day. Someone bring back the 80s.

Great video. We moved from Bryn to the North of Scotland when I was 10 and I remember going down Ashton with my mum, what seemed like daily. I'm now 38 with 4 kids of my own, this is very nostalgic to watch. It's interesting seeing it all joined up, I remember all of the roads individually but never had a grasp on the pattern they were in.

Great video, and some good local history. Just a couple of points - the Kwik Save lasted for at least a decade until it moved - it was the opening anchor tenant for the Gerard Centre, which I believe opened in the early 90's. The Cropmtons building was still present in the early 80's. Inkjections at Bridge Foot House was Radio Rentals for most of the 80's and early 90's - they put up the slatted background to the sign that exists to this day. The Spudway was a shoe shop for years - distinctly remember shopping for school shoes in the early-mid 80's. Can't quite believe they didn't keep at least the facade of the old town hall. What the hell happened to the market? Accord Legal Services was Tisdalls - Ashton's premier brown goods retailer - seem to remember he survived all the way in to the 90's and is still going in N-L-W. Water Solutions was Groove Records - after the place you described in the video near Barclays closed, Groove was our only/best option throughout the 80's and 90's.

Hi Simon, Thanks for viewing my 'Stroll around Ashton', and thanks for the extra useful information, which brought back a lot of happy memories. In the 80's I was a mobile DJ, and got all my records from Groove Records, as you say, it was the only place in Ashton where you could buy vinyl records ! I am still involved in the 'entertainment' business, I am the resident Quizmaster at The Caledonian Pub, asking the questions and presenting a 'Music Round' every Thursday evening ! Cheers Simon, take care, David Thornton

Cromptons was still there into early nineties I seem to remember - The building frontage at least, if not the firm - Was always staggered at how far back the yards went when they built all those houses and what became to new Kwiksave. Old Kwiksave got turned into the Tom'n'Jerry or Sir Thomas Gerard if you're passing through.

Stupid traffic lights , traffic always backed up because you can guarantee someone at the front will want to turn right blocking everyone behind !
