Dasha system is the foundation of Vedic Astrology, commonly known as Jyotish Shastra. "Dasha" means the major period of a planet. Dasha method is an ideal method of progression through Navagraha's or Rashis. Dasha system is an exclusive technique to assess a particular planet's influence on each of the moon signs or nakshatras.
The Astottari Dasha has also two versions. When there in a planet placed in the ascendant, the Dasha is counted from Ardra nakshatra, but when there is NO planet in Ascendant, then the Dasha is counted from Krittika Nakshatra.
(Lahiri Indian Ephemeris also gives Balance of Astottari Dasha by longitude of Moon at birth, both from Krittika and Ardra Nakshatra).

Astottari Dasha by Ardra Nakshatra-
1. For four Nakshatras starting from Ardra commences the Dasha of Sun,
2. For next three nakshatra after that i.e. Magha begins the Dasha of Moon,
3. Four nakshatra after that i.e. from Hasta will give the Dasha of Mars,
4. Three nakshatra after that i.e. from Anuradha, the Lord of Dasha will be Mercury,
5. Four nakshatra wherefrom i.e. from Purvasadha will have Saturn as the Dasha Lord,
6. Three nakshatra thereafter i.e. from Dhanistha, the Lord will be Jupiter,
7. Rahu will be the Lord of the Dasha next four Nakshatras after that i.e. from U. Bhadrapada, and
8. Then Venus will take over the lordship of the Dasha of next three Nakshatras from the last one mentioned above i.e. from Krittika.
Astottari Dasha by Krittika Nakshatra-
1. For four Nakshatras starting from Krittika commences the Dasha of Sun,
2. For next three nakshatra after that begins the Dasha of Moon,
3. Four nakshatra after that, will give the Dasha of Mars,
4. Three nakshatra after that, the Lord of Dasha will be Mercury,
5. Four nakshatra wherefrom will have Saturn as the Dasha, Lord,
6. Three nakshatra thereafter, the Lord will be Jupiter,
7. Rahu will be the Lord of the Dasha for next four Nakshatras after that and
8. Then Venus will take over the lordship of the Dasha of next three Nakshatras.
9. The Lord of the Dasha at birth will be determined by counting in this order up to the Birth Nakshatra.
10. The duration of Astottari Dasha for Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Saturn, Jupiter, Rahu and Venus Dashas are 6, 15, 8, 17, 10, 19, 12 and 21 years in respective order.
