The presence of Aswathama in Trivandrum was stated by Mahakavi Ulloor in his work Kerala Sahithya Charitram.While commenting on the famous 'Kovalam Kavikal' , Ulloor states that they met with Aswathama on his way to Sree Padamanabha Swamy Temple and they were blessed by Aswathama with wisdom and knowledge. It was after this incident that both brothers became poets.

The story is slightly different. After the war, Duryodhana , wounded and on his death bed, appointed Aswathama as the commander of Kauravas.Aswathama along with Kripa and Krithavarma entered Pandava camp during night and slaughtered all except the five brothers who were taken away by Lord Krishna who knew about this well in advance. Aswathama had invoked Kaalabhairava before undertaking this attack. On their return ,Pandavas chased Aswathama and both Arjuna and Aswathama used Brahmastra. To save the world from destruction veda Vyasa stood in between them and advised to withdraw their weapons. Arjuna did as told. But Aswathama blinded by vengeance directed the weapon to Uttara's womb. For using Brahmastra against a helpless child, Lord Krishna cursed Aswathama to wander with a wound which will not heal.But it is also mentioned in some spiritual texts that Aswathama met with Dattatreya and was initiated in to Sree Vidya.And thus he was cured of the curse. It is also mentioned that in the next Manvanthara,Aswathama will be holding the position of Veda Vyasa.
