Tutorial and review of the new ZWO ASI air pro. After a few weeks of testing I completely believe this to be a contender for the best astrophotography device to be release in years. No more laptop, wires, power box or several applications running at once. Perfect for quick setup and mobile rigs. Well worth the upgrade from the original. I will be selling my original Air and the pocket power box after using the PRO. The continued patches and updates mean the the device is just getting better and better.
Main new features (positives) - live stacking, meridian flip, updated histogram, Home wifi network connectivity, power supply channels and dew heater support, increase performance and support soon to include auto focus. New mounting arrangement for dovetail or bolted with threaded case.
Negatives, more expensive than original, although ZWO offer a trade in. The dew heater connection is 2.1 DC so you may need an adaptor, see link below. Power limited to 2 Amps per channel so not all mounts can be powered by the Pro. No dew heater control but ZWO have this planned. 5G wifi distance isn't as good as I would like, however 2.4 is fine and fast enough. I use wifi extender for peace of mind.
Imaging scope - Celestron Edge HD 8".
Mount - skywatcher HEQ5 Pro, with rowan belts mod carried out by myself.
Camera - ZWO ASI 294MC Pro available here.

Control device - iPad Pro 2018.

Enjoyed watching your tutorial and review 👌 the ASIair Pro is not good for my current telescope setup as i have the Celestron Nexstar Evolution 9.25" series which is full of new innovation. To go through it all would be a long hefty essay. Firstly my OTA is alt/az mounted on a HD Pro Wedge, the mount has a 10 hour lithium ion battery built in so no need for a power tank, once aligned i can then align to 10 more calibration stars, the more stars you align to the more accurate the tracking which eliminates the need for a auto guider, the OTA generates it's own wifi which enables you to connect via a Android or iPhone device using the SkyPortal App to control the telescope, the OTA aligns itself using the Starsense Autoalign, no more bending down aligning 2 or 3 stars 🙌. I do like that the ASIair Pro does live stacking which is pretty cool....thanks for sharing your knowledge my friend and greetings from Nottingham ☺ just one more thing is alt/az mounts/mounted on a wedge don't get meridian flips which is super nice when imaging close to the meridian line 👌this particular telescope polar aligns to any star or planet 🔭

Back in 1982-1984 was was part of an Astronomy club in high school. I have purchased some telescopes in the past, but nothing really fancy. I just purchased an upgrade to an 8SE, but watching your vid, I might have bit off a bit more than I can chew. I have worked in IT for a long time, but I do have a finder scope (Alstar 70mm Compact Deluxe Finder & Guidescope Kit with 1.25" Double Helical Focuser - Guiding) the ASiair Pro and ZWO ASI (ASI178MC) camera. I know I need to order some mounts to put on the scope, as just having it dangle, isn't going to be good. I initially just wanted to put the camera on the Celestron 8SE directly, but a salesman told me I needed to put that on the guide scope. I do see you have setup on both. First, I just need to get all this stuff going. I will attempt to use my Galaxy tab while out there setting it up, but will use the software on my PC to control it all once set up. Or so I hope.

David Hayes, Yes, I did this today with a Canon 450D And a Nikon D5100 with total success. I used a USB cable from camera to ASIAIR pro, also shutter a release cable connected between cameras and unit. I have a selection of shutter cables suit my various Canon, Nikon and Panasonic camera’s from my Pluto rig. It all worked from my larger iPad using the 5gh wi-fi. Initially for using DSLR on Sky Watcher Star Adventure Astro rig with a ZWO mini guide camera 290. Note guides in RA only.. Very happy with results. Next is to set it up on my SW EQ6-R PRO Mount driving a Meade SN-10 scope etc. Guides in RA & Dec. I did all my setup during the day, way, way better than trying to do it at night.

Great and informative video, answered a couple questions I had about it (including powering the mount) so glad I watched. I actually had to legit pause the video and look up the weight of that scope though cause I was like "WHOA" when you said/I saw the HEQ5! Thankfully I was able to find (literally) one in-stock so I've swooped it up to go with my new HEQ5 coming later today. Can't wait to get everything setup and going both with the ASIAir and without! That said I am not able to easily find one of those EQDir cables so that makes me sad panda... However am I right in thinking that any RS232 with Serial on one end and RJ45 (or was it RJ42) will work as they do include a Serial RS232 to USB adapter. So just need something to plug into mount vs hand controller!
@AstroDad

Tomec hi mate glad to help. I’m not sure about other cables as I haven’t tried and wouldn’t want to give bad advice. I have linked in the info the cables use and that works.
@Tomec86
@Tomec86 4 жыл бұрын
@@AstroDad Definitely fair enough and I think I definitely will be looking into those cables once the ASIAir arrives. It turns out the new HEQ5s don't have the RS232 to Serial adapter thing included in the box anymore anyways as the new SynScan 5 uses/has a USB connector. So at the very least it should be easy to plug the HC into the ASIAir, and I think when you go that route the main thing you have to do first is a star alignment on the HC before it works? Too much stuff to try to figure out/think about when you're still waiting for packages/clear nights + the whole supply shortage of some things presently!

Great tutorial! Thank you. I just got my pro . I followed your video and everything worked without a hitch with my setup. My problem started when using DSS. First I noticed that the lights were not .fits nor tiffs. The file extension was .tnp or something. But I went ahead and stacked anyway. Final stacked image was poor and grainy. Now I could blame insufficient exposure and what not. But I was test shooting the moon. Is there a setting that I’m missing with respect to fits format? Perhaps it has nothing to do with what’s happening during stacking. Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers Dino

Regarding dithering - you mentioned that dithering wasn't possible with live stacking. Is it possible to dither when not live stacking ? I hope so as I've found that dithering removes much more noise from images than any amount of noise reduction when post-processing.

Great video, this looks like a significant step forwards for mobile imaging. Am I right in thinking you can auto run a sequence of captures but that is only against a single target? In your video you ran the goto and platesolve before starting the imaging run, I assume you cannot program a sequence of different targets and let it run the whole lot? Also, does the framing/platesolver include rotation?

james 12345 will do an automatic meridian flip, then resume guidance and sequence. At the moment one sequence per one target however the pro and new hardware now means zwo are pushing the software development more now so it is continually improving. Hello Astrodad, Nice tutorial ! Thanks..helps a lot. Concerning polar alignment, I always need to do a 3 star alignment with the Asiair, is that different with the pro version ?

Agustin Martin hi agustin sorry for late reply. It depends on mount and how you connect. With eq mod cable 3 star align is a thing of the past.

You noted that your main 12V power in was running at 10A. The documentation says 2A-6A. Have you noticed anything weird or degraded performance? I want to get a higher amperage power supply to run my ASI183MM Pro from it and also a heater strip but was afraid I'd over amp the Air....thanks, and great vid! Just ordered mine about an hour ago, here's hoping the backorder wait isn't too long.

Thank you so much for your time and effort, really appreciate it, the tutorial is clear and entertaining so I enjoyed watching it to the end. May I ask how you power it, I see it comes will a dc cable so this goes into your power tank ? or does it need a transformer and ac supply?? Thanks again
@AstroDad
@AstroDad 4 жыл бұрын
Trevor Coleman thanks Trevor I really appreciate your kind words. I power it with a 240VAC to 12 VDC 10A transformer. It doesn’t come with this. It doesn’t however need the small transformer the original comes with.

Great video. I have almost the exact setup on 11 inch edgeHd. Just received my Air Pro. One question; where did you get that small dovetail you used to attach it to your OTA?

Great setup. I'm confused though. The ASIair Pro product page says it is NOT compatible with the ASI120MM guide camera. But here I see it on your setup. Are they wrong or have you had problems with using the USB 2.0 guide camera?

I'm imaging with F7 reducer with PHD and SharpCap stacking and processing in PixInsight but with off axis guiding because 60 mm guide scope and 120 mini is not accurate enough for the high focal length. OA guiding works but finding the guide star is difficult. I usually image at 3 minutes. Thanks for your video on the ASI Air, I've considering switching to it for its simplicity. Any advice on the guiding?

Great video - thanks! Has anyone tried the ASIAIR PRO with the SKYWATCHER NEQ6 PRO (with the RS232 rather than EQ6-R PRO with USB)? does it still require the handset and 3 star align befor connection to ASIAIR as it did with the ASIAIR V1?

Aloha Phil, I have been spamming the refresh button for a couple of weeks in hope you would put up a further ASIAIR video. Made me smile when I saw you had uploaded one after a pretty rough day :) Great video as always I can’t wait to get mine from FLO. Clear skies to you and all the best :) P.S Hows the Jambon? ;)
@AstroDad
@AstroDad 4 жыл бұрын
Higher Resolution the jambon was shared out. Was too much. That’s made it worth the late nights after the kids went to bed to make the video. It’s great knowing people appreciate it and that it’s helped someone even if one person. Cheers mate.

I just got the ASIAir Pro and connected it to my iphone with little trouble. However, when I wanted to focus the guide camera (ZWO ASI290) All I could get is a black screen. Tried everything I could think of and no change, just a black screen. Needless to say I could not PA as a result. Any suggestions?

Great tutorial .. how do you determine your gain setting , exposure time and how many exposures to shoot?
@AstroDad
@AstroDad 3 жыл бұрын
Gain used is unity gain which differs between cameras. As for exposures. Trial and error really but again depends on camera and the setup used. This big rig is quite slow so needs longer exposures then say a small apo

GDay astrodad... I am thinking about buying an ASI Air pro... I currently use my MacBook Air and Mac for gathering and processing. I have an old iPad... how do you transfer data from what you capture on iPad to your Mac ? Just thinking if I could just use ASI Air Pro to my Macbook rather than iPad as its an older iPad. Thanks mate.
