As someone who lives in Japan and often visits Korea and Taiwan. I can say personally that I have never felt in danger cause of my sexual orientation in any of these countries. In Japan, PDA isn't something most people do so if you do it with your partner, they might not look at you cause you are LGBTQ but just cause it's not common. Though in most instances (espcially in Tokyo) people just dont care what others are doing. I personally dont unless they are being distruptive.

For me, Thailand is the most liberal country for LGBTQ+ people. why First, Thailand is a strong Buddhist country, and being gay is not a sin but as a result of your karma from a past life, so it doesn't matter to others. Second, Thai dramas present a lot of LGBTQ+ relationships, and ladyboys are common, so society is familiar with and accepts it. There are many LGBTQ+ role models, like celebrities, politicians, and teachers anf so on. Most importantly, same-sex marriage will be legalized very soon. Thailand is like a Disneyland for LGBTQ+ folks with its vibrant vibe, friendly gay scene, and endless fun. haha

I love the Philippines but it makes sense that it is not on the list. The crime is very high compared to the countries listed here and honestly when it comes to tourism general safety and queer rights are equally important. I don’t want to have to “be careful” when I travel. I want to relax. To walk down whatever street I want to at night, to stay in whatever neighborhood I want, to leave my expensive phone at the beach and not worry it will be stollen while I swim etc. So im very grateful for this safety focused list man. This is by far my favorite gay related channel.

I agree with your listings. But consider how in the Philippines, LGBTQ presence is nationwide. There is substantial queer representations in Television, Films & other social/entertainment venues. There is even a transgendered Congresswoman. There are thriving gay scenes, not only in the Urban areas but in provinces as well, with every town, small & large hold gay pageants annually - often sponsored by the local municipal government. Though more pro LGBTQ laws are needed, there are LGBTQ rights Bills/ Laws in place. The country is well known in tourism to be accepting & friendly to both local & foreign tourists. So far there have yet reports/posts of foreign tourists , straight & queer that have been victims of harassments/ crimes & if there are, it's very likely isolated given that the country is ranked highest in Asia in social media usage & is most possibly reported/posted. Immersing with the populace is not as difficult since even with some locals speaking broken english, communication is much less challenging. With around 7,100 islands, there are more tourist beaches & water sports destinations to cater to both high end & budget preferences than any of the top 10 countries on your list. So where does the Philippines stand in your list?
@QueerKingdomOfficial
@QueerKingdomOfficial 3 ай бұрын
Very good points! 😊 Unfortunately, the crime rates compared to other countries on the list had it placing lower for this particular list on “safe queer travel”despite its great LGBTQ rights by Asian standards. I would have to check but I think it would have somewhere around 15th.

I agree that the Philippines should be in the list. Gay freedom/visibilty is far better than most countries on the list. Most crime are related to drugs. Rarely ive heard a gay tourist become a victim of crime. Should have use gay crime than general crime rate. And with the openness of a country and acceptance with gay the lesser the chance crime will happen. Id rather be in the Philippines than go to other country on the list that has no acceptance or openness with gay people because chances of becoming a victim of hate crime is higher

Nepal should be at higher rank but i do understand the overall view , am a queer man from Nepal . we have always been respectful towards trans people from the ancient times but only in 2007 we legally recognized them that day onward , i remember in middle school we were educated about sexuality and gender identity and expression and its still taught in school today. in nepal they recently legalized same sex marriage we are moving slowly but steadily. also living in nepal i have never felt unsafe maybe because i am a man but its literally one most safest country for women in south asia and asia in general . also thank you for this informative video. edit : same sex marriage between two women from chitwan Nepal can be taken as example if the first queer marriage cant .

It really is wonderful to see how far Nepal has come in recent years and its historical ancient acceptance of diverse gender identities! Thank you for your comment! 😊 From my research it seems that while a handful of queer marriages have taken place in Nepal and been backed by various government institutions, there still has not been a clear law passed that explicitly makes same sex marriage accessible in every situation. But I imagine that government will be passing such a bill this year and making it all totally official in light of the special cases where same sex marriages have been approved already! It’s wonderful to see! 💯 🇳🇵🏳️‍🌈

I’m sorry if I look stupid for asking this but does this list include the Middle East? Because I thought Israel was very gay friendly, so is it just less safe compared to these countries or not included in the ranking?
@QueerKingdomOfficial
@QueerKingdomOfficial Ай бұрын
Wonderful question! 😊 Yes, Israel (and the rest of the Middle East) is included in Asia and had an incredible score for LGBTQ rights. For this particular video I wanted to make a list of the safest queer destinations in Asia so that meant including data on general safety as well as LGBTQ specific rights and public opinion. So all of these factors were merged together. Unfortunately, due to risk factors like terrorism, and generally being less safe currently that other countries on this list, when I ran the numbers Israel was not in the top 10, but that was due to the inclusion of a safety factor using data from the global index. If I had not included the measure of general safety as outlined in the Methodology of the video and instead looked only at LGBTQ rights on their own with 0 other criteria then Israel would have totally made the list! Hope that makes sense! Some people wish I had gone this route and not mentioned safety as a factor and I understand! But for this video I wanted people who really value staying safe and avoiding conflict, war, terrorism, crime etc to find places that balanced all forms of safety, both LGBTQ and general. But Israel is incredible for queer rights and I’m super proud of them for being the only civilized country in their entire Middle East region. I may do a separate video about the most LGBTQ friendly countries in Asia and not mention travel or safety, only queer specific laws and public opinions within the countries. When I make that, I already know from the data that Israel will be in the top 5 easily.

Things that surprised me in this video: - Loas being in the top 10 - Loas being correctly pronounced (Geography Now is the only other KZfaq channel in which I've heard the country's name pronounced correctly on.) - Bhutan being in the top 10 - Singapore being in the top 10 - Cyprus _not_ being in the top 10 (I believe the nations of Cyprus and Israel have by far the best queer rights in the Middle East, [which I know isn't saying much unfortunately,] but I know that Israel is kind of... complicated... but I still expected Cyprus.) Seriously though, was Cyprus like #11? Because I know they have civil unions.
@QueerKingdomOfficial
@QueerKingdomOfficial 24 күн бұрын
I try my best to pronounce names correctly, maybe I won’t always get it right but I’ll try! 😁 And yes, Singapore surprised me too but the progress they have made in just like 2 years is massive! As for Israel, they genuinely did not make the list due to their low score on the second index (global peace index) but if this video did not take safety into account it would have made the list for LGBTQ rights only and been in the top 5 too. But I wanted to make a video that also incorporated safety as a factor in the overall score and what is where Israel fell short of the top 10. I hope I made this safety element of the video clear enough. As for Cyprus, it is funny because I actually just finished spending 3 months in Cyprus! I knew that it was considered to be part of the Levant and was not quite European geographically, but because its culture, language, political affiliations etc are all European and it is part of the EU I literally did not even think to include them. If I did, they would be in the top 3 I think. Just based off what I know about their stats. So leaving them out was a mistake technically speaking. I know they are part of west Asia when you look it up, but it just feels so wrong to me considering how European it is. Literally just escaped my mind and I never would have left them out on purpose just because they “don’t feel like they are part of Asia” so it was a total oversight! 😅
@HelpICantThinkOfACleverName
@HelpICantThinkOfACleverName 24 күн бұрын
@@QueerKingdomOfficial I figured that safety was the reason why Israel wasn't included, and that Cyprus being so European in basically every way despite being the the Middle East geographically was the reason why Cyprus wasn't. I knew that Cyprus is geographically Asian, but culturally, linguistically, and politically European. I totally get what happened. Everyone makes mistakes. And yes, you made the safety factor clear. At least clear enough for me.👍

By LGBTQ rights Israel is excellent and in the top 5 (forget exactly, I think it was 3rd or 4th) but by safety it was quite far down due to risk of terrorism and international conflicts which are taken into account and why Thailand was 10th instead of like 3rd as they are fighting Islamic insurgents in the south of their own country. I think a balance between queer rights and general safety is useful because queer people are just people at the end of the day so I want to encourage people to go to places where I feel they will be generally safe in all respects. Unfortunately, India is far from the top 10 and it’s easy to understand why when it is compared to the other countries on this list based on the metrics laid out in the video. Radical Islamists in parts of the country are one reason for this, as well as crime against women and minorities, and theft of personal belongings being prevalent according to the statistics we are using today. Also social unrest + international disputes with Pakistan and China add to India’s lower overall safety scores. Additionally it has only been legal to be gay in India since 2018 and many people are still quite intolerant compared to the countries on this list.
