Fully agree, big flooding in 2011 also caused by poor water management. Politicians did not want water to pass to their cities. It was finally uncontrollable.

@@thanaang1455 Yeah, same thing happens in almost all SEA nations. That's why it's puzzling me why CNA is pushing this idea. They should cite "untouched" islands in SEA instead, where there's a clear justification that it's sinking plainly because of the so-called rising sea level. Their argument os very problematic tho.

Indonesian government needs to learn from many other countries how to keep their rivers and canals being clean and clear all the time... Indonesian people mostly don't know how to respect nature and how to be wise people in treating trashes and factories liquid waste properly, most of them just keep throwing those waste and rubbishes straight to rivers which causes worst pollution. How sad this fact is...

There is an eerily similar documentary about the effect of sea level rise in Ho Chi Minh city. a) more frequent and more severe storms b) removal of the groundwater and land compression c) weight of the high rise buildings d) covering the open ground with concrete e) filling of the smaller drainage canals f) more intense river floods g) raising the roads which means that the locals have to raise their houses to avoid water runoff from the roads.

As a geologist, I can say there are several problems - one is ground subsidence due to a load and ground water usage. Another problem - transgressions and regressions - there is nothing can be done about that. It has to be clearly investigated and all hypothesis has to be checked. Based on this designs has to be made. I like Bangkok, a specially it’s historic centre, but something has to be done with urban planning. Traffic issues due to poor urban planning or absence of planning is an issue as well.

While watching this series, I was actually thinking the same. We should put a public park or maybe a permaculture forest with a pond at the center of each cities, to be able to catch rain water and retain it to the soil so that rain water would be wash away to the rivers which will eventually end up in the sea. If there is no space in the city, then the government can buy the land and have the people in a housing project without the people paying anything. Much better if the housing is built within at the edge of the public park so they could appreciate their sacrificed lands.

Nowadays all groundfloors are concerted to shops and even flats. They will regret that if the sealevel is rising and the weather pattern is changing dramatically, floods and storms will prevail, many poeple will die, BTW, Singapore is sinking as whole at a rate of 50cm per year.I remember the Orchard road shops now under the street level were the groud floor.Still they have the street level yearly, b'c ause when it rains.. it poors looks like then like canale grande in Venice.

Bangkok is situated on the largest river in Thailand on the Delta at the oceanfront. They turned the delta tributaries into canals and then filled those canals io make roads. So now the water has nowhere to go except into the streets in monsoon season. Aleo the ocean is rising due to Global Warming. Originally it was empty land people knew not to build there and the capitol city was farther upstream but it was too tempting to build on the coastline and the city grew very large. ....

People in Thailand have been talking for decades now, that too much of the forests were cut down. When a heavy rain happens, all that water flows to the Chao Praya drainage basin, putting huge swaths of land underwater. Fighting against deforestation, and perhaps reforestation, could help a lot to absorb water during the rainy season and to also slow down the drainage of water too into the rivers.

I have a house little bit north of Chiang Mai, near by Maejo. There is system of channels dumbs and pounds to protect from flooding. However, what works for a city away from sea and 150-300 meters above sea level, will not work for a city 0-6 meters above sea level. If it is transgression the only way is relocation.

This is not rising sea levels. This is subsidence. Two very different things. Has nothing to do with climate or sea level. This is what happens when you pave over land and start pumping the ground water out from under it. South Florida has the same problem. So do a lot of places. You can't blame this on climate change.

Cytis are sinking because of overbuild and clogging the canals or filling them up with trash. Some years ago when there was heavy flooding in Bangkok, the city issued sandfilled bags, to barricade the shops/housesm most likely the most stupid thing to do, the bags burst and the sand is now clogging the sewers.Another thing, 25 years ago there was a severe flood( again) in Bangkok. As usual Sukumvit road turned into a mighty river, after the flood the egg-heads in the admin. decided to replace the sewer pipes wit ones of 1 metres, But they forgot that the wieght of the concrete pipes was accerbating the problem because they sunk again and we now are at square one, enjoy my posts.. and klick LIKE Merci..

Take it easy, we all just need money. All will be overcome with money and the government is not corrupt. With money, the city will not sink. What do you think the difference between Bangkok, Manila and Jakarta with Singapore ? Do you think that Singapore is not sinking with a very small area? In the coastal area? The answer is Singapore is not sinking because they are rich and developed countries, if they are developing countries it will definitely sink too. It is all because of the money and the behavior of the people and the government. THINK ABOUT THAT !

The main cause is the fault of the government, dictatorial military junta is the same as communist regime, a lot of incoming investment in Thailand has only enriched the members of military regime and their cronies. Meanwhile the people are left with their troubles. Investors should begin to learn and thinking from the military coup case in Myanmar. Investments will stop and possibly disappear because the Myanmar military junta can unilaterally cancel all business deals reached by the previous government. As a note, the junta military or communist government with a single power without any opposition can do anything including corruption on all fronts and the people can only see and accept what happens. very sad!

As sea levels keep rising there are a number of factors involved causing erasure of areas that stood above sea level...man made errors of building close to water edges is constantly being done, there is also the changes in the earth crust which is coming from lava flow under the seas which displace water it once flowed freely, that water has to go somewhere and to that fact it seeks the weakest spots around the world. low lying lands will always suffer as the increase in displacement is ever on going with the lava that is emitted from below the crust of the earth, when that becomes solid by cooling it is going to take up space that water occupied, simple application of Archimedes principle regarding water being displaced when an object of mass is created in a volume of water, Lava becomes solid mass under the sea taking up the space the water occupied, it is not just climate change as most see it, add to that melting ice caps as we know is water volume that increases sea levels. no easy answer as nature takes it`s course regardless to human efforts to hold back the tides or deal with the rains that systems can not cope with.

CNA is a Singaporean news government propaganda machine. The only way this small dot can compete with its neighbors is to put them down. Manila, Bangkok, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Saigon and even Seri Begawan and Dili, and all other SEAN cities will in the long run be better, more sustainable and a more pleasant place to live than Singapore. Unique among other mega cities, London, NY or even HongKong, Singapore has no "backyard" to sustain it. It's just a dot, not a dot in the middle of somewhere, just a DOT. It better be on the good side of its neighbors, rather than antagonizing them with fake, condescending and sometimes outrightly slanderous report just like this one.
