It’s June, which means it’s Pride Month for the LGBTQ+ community. However, one Indonesian former police officer probably won’t be celebrating because this Central Javanese police officer of ten years said he got fired for being gay. Local police then claimed he failed to execute his duties as a police officer, which includes adhering to religious norms and codes of decency. So how do ordinary Indonesians feel about this incident and how do they perceive people in the LGBTQ community in general? We hit the streets of Jakarta to find out.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Indonesian population.
Special thanks to our Asian Boss team in Jakarta, Indonesia.

It's hard one, I'm indonesian, people here have mixed opinion about it. For me I'm againts it but not anti about it, i have friend who gay but yeah i'm not discriminate him or either support him bcs i see it as privacy, so i tolerate him with his sexuality and he respect me as a person with religion. As long as the lgbt didnt force me to accept them that i have to to join them, i'm alright with them. Because theres some other lgbt who wanted to be respected but expect us to join them and speak ill about us follow our religion rule, saying that we're not open minded even tho we already tolerate and respect them. About country law tho that is hardest one

I feel like the conclusion this video brings is Indonesia, though a muslim country, is libertarian enough to respect those they do not agree with. The issue is polarization; you are either pro-lgbt or anti-lgbt, we need a word that can bridge the gap where you may not support or accept the lifestyle due to your personal beliefs, but you respect the individual and their choices in their lives.

Good point. I never thought of that aspect. How about "neutral-LGBT+"
@ninibugg6203
@ninibugg6203 Жыл бұрын
This is exactly how it needs to be in the U.S. In America, liberal-leaning people think that if you're not pro-LGBT or openly supportive, then you're LGBT-phobic. But on the other hand, conservative-leaning people are so anti-LGBT, that they wanna take away their rights, like marriage, etc. Neither viewpoint is okay. People are allowed to have whatever personal and religious views they want about the community, whether they think it's a sin or not. At the same time though, those people need to respect LGBT people and their choices, and realize that they are people who deserve to live their lives. LGBT also need to respect those people's choices/beliefs as well, and realize that everyone who doesn't openly support them isn't against them. It's all about respect. And respect ≠ agreeing with viewpoints.

I beg to differ. Have any of you guys ever hear a news about a year ago that thounsands (you read it right, thounsands, not just ten or hundreds) Indonesians sent threatened massages and pictures of LGBTQ who were slayed in their country to a Thai gay couple and their parents/relatives along with the wedding photographer just because they married in TH, under Thai custom? Nothing (repeat -- nothing) related to Indonesian, both people and their culture, at all. If you haven't heard the news, google and read it for yourselves before you judge. People "act" in front of camera due to manner and their image in the eyes of others. Not just Indonesian but all. However what they do esp. where they think nobody watch them like the net is when their true color show. Those who have no willing to harm anybody at all will do no harm to anybody even on the net because it's their nature. Their way of thinking. Their mindset. On the contrary those who want to do something but can not do that in the real world due to whatever contraint, the net is where they will do what they want. Something they always hide under their masks.

I mean I know that Indonesia is really sensitive toward the LGBTQ community and also this country is a religious country but the think I am confused is why do they make the ppl who has different sexuality their lifestyle? Like example a girl is a lesbian and all their friend get away or don't want to be her friend just bcs she is lesbian? I don't think its all about the negative side about ppl being lesbian. Bcs we could always look at the positive side and not always about their sexual orientation !! PS I rlly like how the girl in the red jacket and glasses explained about LGBTQ and how we should treat them ^^

I hate how my country take religions way too seriously, if they want to break the law, then let them be. Why do we care anyways? Religion is just beliefs. We are all humans and humans don’t usually come to the world perfectly, some have conditions, disorders and sickness. We cant tell them to be straight, they wanted to be that way so leave them alone. Good thing my city in Indonesia doesn’t really care that much about the LGBTQ community, I’m just mad at my own country.

Here's a good question to ask people in interviews: Which culture do you think is more competitive, heterosexual or homosexual? Do you feel that it is more likely in a competitive culture that there is a greater tendency towards violence than in a less competitive culture? If the vast majority of people are heterosexual as you believe, and therefore most wars are fought by heterosexuals, isn't it clear we can say that heterosexuals are most responsible for all wars?

it’s so weird and wrong that they think it’s a choice to be lgbt. if being lgbt means having no rights, being discriminated, bullied and disappointing your family then i believe no one would choose to be lgbt. but it’s not a choice! edit: apparently homophobes don’t understand or don’t want to understand but the point is: being gay (or lgbt in general) is not a choice, BUT being in a gay relationship and coming out IS a choice. of course everyone can choose to be in whatever relationship they want, gay people can choose to be in straight relationships (but it’d be the same as if straight people were in gay relationships - they won’t be truly happy because no one can be truly happy if they’re not true to themselves), they can also choose to be closeted or open about their sexuality, and they can also choose to “resist” their gay thoughts. everyone is free to choose what they do in their life. but people can’t choose their sexuality. they CAN lie to themselves and say that they’re straight even if they’re not. just like straight people can say they’re gay and choose to be in gay relationships. and yes, of course there are people who were confused at some point and in the end they realized they’re straight. it means they were always straight, not that they “were gay and turned straight”. also bisexual people exist so if someone was in a gay relationship and now they’re in a straight relationship it doesn’t mean they “were gay and turned straight”, they’re just bisexual. it’s kind of worrying how so many homophobes are this highly invested in lgbt people’s lives. believe me, if you mind your own business, work and focus on yourself instead of others and let people love whoever they want, your life will be so much better🙏

Don't worry. No one force your kids to become an lgbt. That's not like male genital mutilation called sunat force unto muslim boys. Sunat is more dangerous than lgbt. Lgbt is just an identity. If you scare that lgbt influence your kids, it proves how insecure you are. Being lgbt is from individual's self, not from lgbt's influence or coercion to become an lgbt. If you think lgbt force the kids to become like them, you are looks like racist whites who think anti-racist whites and non-whites force the white children to become non-white and culturally non-white.

the guy who brings pancasila did a contradictive statement. the fact that the first principle says "belief in the one and only god", now which religion or which god who teaches the adherents to act deviate?
@s21b0b
@s21b0b 4 ай бұрын
Your comment is the biggest mistake you have ever done mister, and actually is a form of disrespect to Pancasila itself. Never in any way the state ideology Pancasila, the Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia, and any supporting laws has mentioned anything related to LGBT-related issues. The first precept (or sila) of Pancasila dan Article 29 Verse 1 of the aforementioned constitution *CANNOT BE* in any way the basis for prohibiting LGBT (note that the first precept only mentions about Indonesia's acknowledgement of deity (read divinity) and that every form of freedom of religion/belief is to be guaranteed by the state). After all, anti-LGBT sentiments do originate from the Indonesian society in general. Even the Indonesian police do not even use anything related to anti-LGBT as a basis for arresting LGBT-practicing suspects, they use rather absurd reasoning instead, for instance cyber-related (see UU ITE) or even pornography-related issues (see UU Pornografi), well for sure that's because there isn't any law explicitly forbidding LGBT in the first place. Also important to note, if anyone translates _"Ketuhanan yang Maha Esa"_ as "Belief in the one and only 'God'", then those people have committed the ultimate mistake of not properly interpreting Pancasila itself, or even worse, disrespecting it. The proper translation comes with words that go along with “divinity which is the Great One”, which literally encapsulates what I have just stated, divinity as in the acknowledgement of deity and the guarantee for freedom of religion/belief.

Being open minded is not only accepting or respecting ONE SIDE. It's accepting or respecting BOTH SIDES. None of the people in the video wants to hurt lgbt community, none of them agree with the punishment and the only thing some of them suggest is counseling. And let's not forget about the history, shall we? In US, LGBT community has been around for about 400 years. In the 17th century, those who are gay was sentenced to whipped and jail because it was included in the sodomy law. The community faced discrimination for hundred years. In 1955 there is a anti gay law that will fire gay or lesbian who work for government. The US only start to have lgbt rights law in 1982 and only one state did that. In 1996 president Clinton signed the defense of marriage act denying same sex spouses. And ONLY FOUR YEARS AGO THEY LEGALIZE SAME SEX MARRIAGE. It took them MORE THAN 300 YEARS to be protected in the US and 400 years to have the same right to get married. You can read the rest in many sources about history of LGBT in America. Now, Indonesian history about lgbt community just start in late 1980s and 1990s. Indonesia DOES NOT CRIMINALIZE LGBT people. Never in the history Indonesia put people to jail simply because they are gay. Sure discrimination happen in the society, but those who will get the punishments are the ones who bullied, attack, abuse. Now, how about Aceh? Aceh has a special law granted because of the separation movement in the past and they granted the special law to prevent that happen. I am not gonna include Aceh because their law is different from the rest of Indonesia. It's pathetic how people always blame a certain community because they oppose lgbt community when that community is actually still new about the idea. Indonesia is like still in baby state in terms of the growing of LGBT community. Seems like they forgot the history that their own people in the past, for hundred years opposing and even criminalizing the idea.

Once again i say, as indonesian muslim im not agree with LGBT idea, but IM NOT HATE people/human that did LGBT. Upset? Yes i feel upset if my closed person is LGBT. But whatever it is, he/she still being my friend/family. I will still accepted them and hope they cured (sorry if this kind of thinking is different with u). Even if they not cure i will still treat them as i treat them before LGBT. I dont care if people in the world bully my country for not LGBT allow in our country. Its a norm of my country. And i hope it will be continue this way

I don't care if they don't support LGBTQ+ community, but at least don't hate, mock, or insult them because of their beliefs. I mean, you have your own belief and LGBTQ+ community also have their own belief, why would you force your beliefs on other people? Duh

Do you think LGBT people in Indonesia feel good about most of those comments in the video? LGBT people are treated vastly better in the west and its difficult for many foreigners to imagine their LGBT friends and family treated that way. Thus the comments.

@raja klana I'll keep advocating for LGBT equality and nothing less, as I have my entire life. Thank you very much. You can do whatever you want in your mosque but legislating second class citizenship for LGBT people is not the job of government. Everyone deserves equality under the law, up to and including same sex marriage.

No churches are forced to perform LGBT marriages. Check again. I am talking about civil legal marriage at the courthouse. Religion does not need to be involved at all. LGBT people are second class citizens in Indonesia because they can’t legally marry their spouses. Nor is there any discrimination protection for LGBT people. Indonesia has a long way to go to do right by its LGBT citizens. Thailand is a vastly better place to be LGBT and its hard to recommend to LGBT people that they should put their labor and capital to work in a place that clearly doesn’t respect them.

@@exnihilo415 well, I do hear some gay couples in US are adamant on having a church ceremony even though the church didn't believe homosexuality is ok. And I do find it odd for churches to adopt gays as members, even bringing them to the ministry, even though the Bible warned against homosexuality. I don't know, isn't that a contradiction between the text and the practice? The clerk that refused to sign marriage license for gays because of her personal belief, imo, is at fault. Because while she do have a different belief, but she, as an employee of the state courthouse, she must also represent the views of the courthouse (which allowed gay marriages). And wasn't there like a Supreme Court case where a baker refused to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple, but the couple kept on insisting? I don't know why is that a big deal, cause if I was said baker, I would just make the cake. 💰 is still 💰.

No church in the US is required to officiate marriages they don’t want to officiate. The actual legal marriage comes when you sign the legal marriage license from the state. Everything else is just theatrics. Plenty of christian Churches do allow gay members and perform same sex marriages because they want to. You’ll need to talk with them individually to see their interpretation of scripture. Kim Davis was the clerk in question, she did some jail time for not following the law and eventually her office was forced to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples. Masterpiece cake shop was the Supreme Court case and it didn’t actually issue a broad ruling about wether or not a public business can deny service to gay customers as a class. The point is that not being able to legally marry is a big deal for a huge number of legal and economic reasons, as is protecting gay people from being fired just for being gay. These are basic civic rights and Indonesia needs to do right by it’s tax paying LGBT citizens.

One thing I like to share with everyone is that LGBTQ community is the most vulnerable and highly suicidal rate worldwide ( doesn't matter rich or poor family background). I lost my friends due to bullied, the society rejected, neglected and abused caused everyone shutted the door behind them. And another friend of mine is a doctor and disowned by his parent ( he packed up and moved to L.A). I used to hide my personal preferences and affraid the previous workplace misjudged me. Im currently working at worldwide known children's hospital where I work along with most talented gay doctors, nurses, and medical staffs and all people from different countries, cultures and backgrounds. Have to tell you, im so happy here. People here are very kind and sympathetic to care for sick childrens, not worry about their own personalities being judged. Houston has the most diversity city in the world, 159 languages speaking and over 90 countries from all around the world. We all learn from each other and enjoy so different type of foods and festivals. Come to visit Houston and yall will see. Your problems are not a big deal when you see these kiddos going through. Final note, do you know why medical system is so advanced caused we shared and exchange the knowledge and working hard to find the cure for all mankind. So we continue education every year, and learn new techniques and share ideas among each other. Worldwide! Im curious why people still learn the Bibles ( all religions) from 2000 years ago or more but we are currently 21st century and instill the old ideology ? Bible is man-made and obviously its up to us adapt to our current events and for future. Anyone agrees or disagree?
