asimplyfab.life/ Check out part 1 here: • LAND ROVER DEFENDER SU... In this one - everything on a Landy simply must have at least two uses - of course ;-)... A snorkel is not just a snorkel, tree sliders or a roof rack have other purposes... And let's have a look at some typical defender quirks as well - many of you will recognise them... Here's Part 2 of ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT OWNING A LAND ROVER DEFENDER and why we love our Landy's so much.

I was on a 4x4 weekend recently with a bunch of Toyota’s and was told a joke I hadn’t heard before, apologies if you hear it often! Apparently, the Landy design team were astounded by how airtight the land cruiser was, and sent a spy to Japan to see how Toyota achieved this. The spy saw that every afternoon a bunch of cats were delivered and one day followed the delivery in. Before closing up for the night, the Toyota quality control team locked a cat in each land cruiser that was having its final checks for the night. When they came back the next morning, if the cat was still alive the car would be sent back to be made more airtight. The Landy spy went back to the UK where he told the design team, and they decided to test it out. So they locked a cat in one of the cars and left it for the night, and the next morning they came back and there was no cat

I was told once a very long time ago BF (before Defender) the reason you sit so close to the door is.....so you can easily see your front wheel when sticking your head out the window thus making it easier to get over obsticles this is a clever design feature from Land Rover

Hi all, my wife often tells the tale of me going to work one day in our ford escort and coming home in a Series lll I just fell in love, The shape, smell, and way you have to drive it. But for me it is a thing of beauty! I am currently looking at a 1986 petrol SWB 90 with the aim of converting it. Watch this space, and thank you so much for taking the time to post your excellent view of our beautiful defenders.

The DEFENDER does not leak oil, it is the ancestor of navigation systems! In case of being lost, it is always possible to return home without dramas. Of course the Defender is reliable, the owners of them are that they like mechanics and are always available to demonstrate their extraordinary mechanical abilities!

British Land Rovers also have the ignition key on the left side of the column. So jump in with key in right hand and ... guess what? It's still on the other side! Haha. Love your LR videos, keep it up.

It's a utility vehicle, what do you expect?! Love it that he's proud of getting a speeding ticket. Pointing out features the salesmen leave out; but Land Rovers really don't need salesmen do they, they sell themselves. Oh, like the T-shirt too.

The door striker not only holds the door closed, you can open a beer on it. I think... never tried. I open beers with my teeth! Also, a few bolts and you can easily pull the driveshaft out, which can then be used to club a squirell or whatever needs eating - you get to baste it in full fat ep90!

Been watching your clips about owning a Defender. I think the only thing I haven't seen is for those of us driving 5 door /110s. The back windows (not the sliding ones, the ones on the back side doors) open themselves..... 😂

Good observation, thank you, sir, 😂. I have to say we didn't experience a similar deal in the five-door 2015 Puma (2015 Land Rover Defender 110 Review - 3 years later) so I suspect you have one of the special editions there😉😀(potluck of course) - look after it and keep rollin'!

Awwww.....don't forget the independent wiper mode and how they never seem to park in the correct spot. I've had two complete arms and blades fly off on the motorway when it was pouring down...luckily both times were the passenger side !! Good old Timmy mallet (the gentle persuader !) secured the 2nd replacement and it's still on 20k miles later !! Great vid as always :-)

I'm in agreement with you. Plus I'm laughing all through it. I have 2 series Land Rovers, and would bet that they have more quirks than Defender. No matter what, they're the only vehicles that have brought me home under their own power. It's a love hate relationship with them. Thanks for sharing your Defender, and all her quirks with us. Safe travels and greetings from Florida USA.

Oil leaks aren't just helpful visually... It's more of a built-in underseal for your transmission. My favourite quirk is finding live wires randomly from owners past when im installing a new bit of kit. There's always a silver lining with Land rover!

Hi, you mentioned that the Temperatur meter rise on the 300 TDI at heavy load , and the benefit ist that you know IT Works. I have an 300 TDI now since 20 years and had the same, starting with 150.000km on the car and getting worse and worse. At the end the Radiator expansions Box colabsed and i lost all Radiator Fluid in the middle of the alps. With a Lot off refilling I still got home, but the head gasket was a bit trough after wards. On the followed repair aktion i discovered that the Radiator was the Problem. It looked from outside as new but on the fan side were totaly worn. Now with a new Radiator the Temperatur meter stays Always in the same Spot, No matter i tow a havy Trailer Up the Hill or not. So be carefull when your Temperatur meter jumps about on a 300tdi, there is For shure a serios Problem on the start. Best regards Wolf

I’ve just fitted a roamerdrive to my tdi series Now I don’t know what to do with my left hand Cos the revs are dropped at 50 ish the gear lever doesn’t buzz and rattle like it used to. That’s the main reason you ALWAYS hold it in a series cos it does your brain in ! Not anymore! But now I’ve got two gear levers to hold and your quite right, there is a lot of oh swapping to be done 👍

The downsides of the land rover quirky bits makes me want one even more . The style . The heritage. I want one . But I'm just afraid my hand will be constantly in my pocket.
@MrCareer707
@MrCareer707 5 жыл бұрын
Your hand will be in your pocket, however, your money will be going on parts that have fallen off and not in the hands of garage tills for Labour costs. My advise, don't hesitate buying one, I have a '94 300TDi 110 CSW, had now nearly 9 years, it's been in the garage for repairs just 3 times in that time, all the other repairs can be done by the owner. I'm no mechanic but the Landy is owner friendly, it loves it's owner working on him or her. Buy one and you'll never drive or want any other vehicle.

When it comes to general off-roading and overlanding, is an ATB or locking diff essential? Or can it do 90% of what’s needed right out of the box?
@ASimplyFabLife
@ASimplyFabLife 3 ай бұрын
In our experience, standard does just about all you need. Axle lockers are for serious rock crawling or mudding really - overlanding (Africa) you're good out the box. (and I say this coming through Kalahari with a rental Hilux, where the centre diff, high range got us through - just air down enough and keep momentum. Also Landies seem to have that bit extra 👍😎

Quirky cars.. Don’t you just love’em…. The Santana, which has most of the main quirks and faults as the Defender…(they look virtually identical on the outside) Santana changed several things when the bust up with LR and put on the last cars they made.. 10 reason the Santana is better than the Defender. 1) Ignition key (LHD) is on the right… no more juggling !!! 2) The back door is 1m wide, much more useful as a van…. 3) The roof is white (on most of them) fiberglass… doesn’t vibrate, keeps car cool inside (due to thickness). Needs no head lining, so nothing to sag….You can’t stand on it though.. 4) Chassis is like Raptor coated, so doesn’t rust anything like as fast as a Def. 5) Bulkheads don’t seem to rust either… (doors, floors, window surrounds etc.. rust like hell) 6) Driving position centred so you can leave window closed when driving. 7) Way quieter inside, can hear the radio, and passengers talking. 8) Headlights really work well, Hellas and Cibié fitted standard. Long beams as standard too that really light up well at night. 9) Part-time 4x4, so quitter on road and less wear on front drive train.

Keep rollin' and thanks for the comment 👍
@garethdwatkins
@garethdwatkins 6 жыл бұрын
My guess is LR went the Chelsea tractor up market route..(look at the Range and Discovery if you have a doubt). Santana went the agricultural, workhorse 4x4 route.... no bells, no whistles. LR actually got pretty pissed off with Santana over the years as they kept improving stuff, better gear box, safari roof, better lights, different engines etc... So the writing was on the wall for a long time before the split.... Santana PS10's are liking rocking horse shit... and have often been even more abused than Landies.... There are a few on the Bon Coin at the moment, one in the dep: 73000 from 2007 is a good price and way cheaper than a Defender...

Very true in every sense!! As the long time owner of a very old 90, with later additions including the 300tdi engine I can relate to everything you say. I've no electronics to go wrong, in fact very little electrics either! I've no steel body to rust and about an inch of Waxoyl on and in those parts that might. There's a cooker large enough to do a Sunday roast for six people fitted inside the back door and a led light bar which can be seen twenty miles away on the roof. There is nowhere I can't go in it and not many places I haven't been in it either. There is no part on it which cannot be repaired at the side of the road with the hand tools always carried. And so on... And so on Then the brain dead manufacturers stop making them because they are old fashioned!!
