I have a 2005 110 9 seater from new 127,000 everyday drive never had any real issues, fitted new starter motor at 120,000 though the original was ok. Replaced one head light bulb one brake and one front sidelight, clutch switch seal and wiring loom engine after 8 years. Vehicle starts at first turn original battery still in place

Think you covered most things, but can’t stress enough the importance of servicing and regular servicing too. If you’re doing lots of miles then change oils/ fluids twice a year but constant checks and top ups always a must. And regularly greases the props/ drive shafts. TD5’s, in my humble opinion, are the best sounding engines and do give great performance both in and off road. I’ve had my 90 for 6 years now and she turns 20 in May 🥳🎂

Thanks for the comments! Yes, you are correct - servicing is crucial! TD5 - our mate Rob has one of the first. Straight pipe. Beautiful, deep bass, throaty grunt under full load and then the turbo whistle 😎👌😁. Has run over 400 000 km with engine tune to (estimated) 170hp - still going strong!

Fair comments? One thing if I can add! Buying parts for these vehicles can be a pain in the ass due to the amount of things available for the defender, a fair few parts available are cheap and worth avoiding, try to purchase OEM parts or genuine LR as a defender owner for around ten years I have had my fill of crap parts and only use genuine LR when I need too, one or two of my friends have LR those who complain of brake downs often buy cheap and cheerful parts? So the moral of this story is try to spend wisely! Great vlog man! Thanks

You nailed it, a lot of good points you've made👌 They are definitely not for everyone though, it suits certain folks more than others. One either hates them or loves them! But if you are a defender die hard and you don't own one then definitely get one! If you look after them they will usually look after you in return in terms of reliability. Aside from all their little quirks and issues they are awesome simple diy machines that few vehicles today can match in simplicity! Just be sure to service and change oils when they are due and be prepared to do a fair amount of preventative maintenance on them to keep them in good knick

Judging from what you've said, I got a really good 2007 Puma. 200,000km. The only thing I had to replace was a gearbox mount, the door seals (They had slightly melted onto the doors, I think in the Kalahari because there was red dust everywhere in between the trim. It had the original Land Rover radio which was buggered. Otherwise it's fantastic. It leaks a bit but that you can't fix it seems :)

Improving the security should be top of the list when you buy one. Steering wheel diclocks are good. Good tracker, Alarm / imob. Make sure doors lock etc. Thieves will watch what you bolt on (winches etc) and wait until its kitted out then steal the vehicle. landys attract a lot of unwanted attention.

I enjoy your posts. Mine is a 1999 td5, after purchasing it 6 years ago, it took another 5k to fix an overheating engine ( needed a new h/d head) but it has now done 50k around Australia - & that's a million corrugations - give or take- . I have to say, & a complete fear of death is handy driving a Defender, but it makes me nervous seeing you without a seatbelt.
@ASimplyFabLife
@ASimplyFabLife 4 жыл бұрын
TD5 - nice! 🤘 Having grown up in South Africa I know what you mean on the corrugations. There was a cetain 'optimum speed' for this, although I can't recall exactly.... 😅 - well spotted on the seatbelt! We were in and out of the vehicle constantly, filming and stuff.... Normally it keeps me in my seat, so I don't 'forget' 😊

Hi. Nice video. I would recommend well fitting doors/ straight body panels and look for those (small??) things which show the vehicle has been cared for. For example the underside of the chassis has many places which collect dirt causing rust over time - any effort to keep these clean?
@ASimplyFabLife
@ASimplyFabLife 4 жыл бұрын
The previous owner maintained this one impeccably - full service and timing belt after each expedition (Mongolia, Mauritania etc.) Luckily we live in a dry climate here - so rust is less of an issue compared with UK or Holland...

Hi there. Hope all is well for both of you? Great video again, very thorough and yet like hearing a good friend talk about his beloved landy!! Maybe just one spec to consider when buying this particular 4x4: traction "aids" such as ARB diff locks or factory installed Traction Control (comes as option since 2000 year models as a package with ABS but never on "E" base models nor on any 130's which to my knowledge never got equiped with TC). Why talk about traction control? Because a "newby" trying out his new to him/her Defender will want to crawl in mud or sand or rocks and expectations might be high but outcome might be disapointing... These are extraordinary machines, very capable in trained hands but can leave you stranded in seemingly easy green paths which can lead to disapointment and that added to the quircks might be a mix for selling the beast. I would certainly prefer a rather basic model without any costly equipment (to start out with) but coming with factory installed TC or even better, a pro installed rear diff lock. Just saying. Have a good time and keep those videos coming, I can't get enough of them.

Thanks for the comment👍 Good point on having some experience and realistic expectations. Remember the old Land Rover films explaining 4x4 from the 60's? Taking a Series up a muddy embankment, fording a river, ploughing a field... 😀 - driving to the capabilities of the machine 👍Most often it is the limitation of the person behind the wheel of course😅.

Ho what about towing capacity? Have you done any on any of your rovers?
@ASimplyFabLife
@ASimplyFabLife 4 жыл бұрын
Good point. Chassis and driveline are rated to 3500kg, which is more than just about anything out there. Pity the early engines weren't... Yes, we have towed! On our 4x4 offroad winching trials/competitions we towed the competition vehicle (with all the mods like rollbars, winches, large tyres etc) with Defenders and Disco 1's. Tdi... blown head gaskets every time on the 300 Tdi's (you're travelling in 4th gear permanently and the radiator is not that big...). We even had a 200Tdi engine block 'bent'. That is pretty hard to accomplish! With lighter loads the Tdi lacks torque - so you're competing in the slow lane with the heavy trucks (you pass them on the downhill, they take you on the uphills 😊 (stuck between 3rd and 4th doing 60km/h)). The TD5 - no problem! Just don't push a taller gear on the hills. Puma - no issues at all on engine temperature. Pulls well, but can run out of breath on a long hill (towing 2000 kg or more).
