This almost made me sad thinking of my childhood, in and out of the hospital for tests and surgery... to me it was just normal and now as a 24 year old I know how abnormal a childhood it really was. Listening to people talk about their adulthood surgeries and knowing I had to deal with such scary things as young as 6 months old. My heart goes out to anyone dealing with medical challenges, at any age, but especially to those dealing with it as children. It's a childhood no one should have.

I had surgery on my leg when I was 14. Before I was brought in my doctor asked what music I liked to listen to. I was kinda confused by the random question so I said something like "I don't know Shakira." The first thing I heard when they wheeled me in was Hips Don't Lie. I'm sure he turned it off as soon as I was under but it was nice of him to try and make me comfortable considering how scary surgery can be.

I can almost guarantee you they didn't turn it off! hahaha doctors and nurses LOVE operating with music on! Especially if it's upbeat like Shakira haha

I work in surgery as one of those people who waves at you from the corner all dressed in a blue gown and mask and gloves that you never see again. A lot of times we can forget how much anxiety people have around being so exposed because we do several surgeries every day. Everyone conceptually knows that healthcare workers don’t care what you look like but as soon as it’s you on the table it becomes different. Anyway thanks for sharing your stories I’m glad y’all are healthy and doing well

Aw thank you so much for your service! My brother was in surgery last month and I personally felt like he had the best care in the world! He may not remember the RNs and other people who helped him but my mom and I sure do. All of them, including the doctors signed a 'Get Well Soon' card for my brother and we stuck it on our fridge once we got home. You guys are the real MVPs because my brother did get a little fussy before surgery because he was nervous and the nurses were so accommodating. I can't imagine going through the same thing multiple times a day. Thank you once again for everything you guys do!

I had surgery last month on the 17. Had 4 fybroid tumor removed from on top and behind my uterus. As soon as the doctor opened me up he and the whole room were shocked because the fybroid they were worried about was bigger than expected it weighed 5 LBS and looked like the head. He said it was the biggest fybroid he's ever removed. Coming out of surgery was scary but all and all I don't regret it. My recovery has been amazing

I have woken up during surgery and TBH it's not really scary or anything. Like I think people are scared by the idea of it because they don't know what to expect and media hypes it up. The area gets a local anesthetic too, typically, and it's not like you can see it without trying [possible exceptions being if they have to get your intestines out of the way by hanging them, but then there's usually fabric hung between you and the operation].... and they stop you... like if you try to like lift your head enough to look they get all uppity about it and make you lay still. I mean like I can feel them moving and pulling stuff, but most people don't have that much sensation when they have local anesthetic. If they notice you're awake they'll check your coherence and your blood oxygen levels and then adjust things to get you to go back to sleep. Not actually scary. Don't put off surgery you need just because of that.

@Scereyaha

sunny , I really think a large part of that is that people expect the surgery to go wrong for some reason, despite that most surgeries are performed thousands of times a day with little incident and that there are so many protocols to keep people safe, or to get your back if something goes wrong. All surgery has risks, but a lot of it is media hype and the way we glorify those one off situations and then dramatify them for reality TV. It hurts real people, and keeps them from getting help that they need, all that hype. Your first surgery will always be a scary thing, but it shouldn't be because of this expectation of disaster reinforced by media. Hype kills.

I think it is really good that you talk about subjects like this and want to thank you for it. I’m 16 years old about to be 17 but a few days before easter I had an emergency surgery on my eye after a field hockey accident. I remember that I was so calm yet so scared because it happened only a few hours after the accident. Through youtubers talking about surgeries and the frights of Anastasia I’m learning bit by bit to accept what happened and to accept my loss of vision, I can only see 30% of what I saw without a correction lens. I’ve been looking up to you ladies for a while now and it feels reassuring to know that even people I look up to aren’t perfect and can know what I’ve been going through. Thank you, Love, Jitske

Just know that there are people that totally know where you've been. Just out of left field, something took something from them. I personally went to therapy for it, and don't feel ashamed if you have to talk it out. I have come to learn it's a concept of grieving what you expected for your life. You expected to have what already had. In my case, I was a fully, emotionally functioning adult. Today? I am cheered on for taking walks to a subway maybe an hour away. But I didn't think I'd be here. And that's what I'm greiving. The loss of wanting to go to college or doing something I can't do now. Just know it's completely normal. I wish you all the best of luck! ♡♡♡

I'm glad people are positive about plastic surgery. Like my grandparents were against me having an ear surgery because they were protruding, and ofc in your case it's more about life quality. But still I was so happy to see a doctor that was super happy about me getting happier if I change a part of my body that had been giving me issues.

@sabinahertzum9728

hanna meier - it’s kinda like that here too, we just pay through our high taxes... and our taxes are outrageously high compared to other comparable countries.... but for our taxes we get healthcare, school from kindergarten to uni, with pay from 18 years old, we get a bunch of other things too ( like roads and stuff) but those two are the once that really makes living here great.... We have laws that say we MUST attend school, and even though we have our free public school system there are Privat schools, just like there are private hospitals.... And even though we have free healthcare, there are rules in place, so things like elective surgery we have to pay for ourselves.... there has to be a medical reason for surgery ;) So free - yeah... but the state keeps about 40% of our paycheck.... 60 if you have a very high income..... so not so free really....

I had a total thyroidectomy right before my 16th birthday. They gave me a shot of some pink liquid beforehand to relax me, and the last thing I remember was princess-waving to the nurses as I was being wheeled down to the operating room. I don't even remember going under the anesthesia. Recovery sucked because I had trouble drinking liquids for a week and my voice was really quiet. I was lucky my family could afford the medical care.

I totally agree with Chantel. I had a surgery on my left breast and God knows how uncomfortable it is when you give your body to stangers and they do something with it that you can’t control while you’re unconscious. And it feels extra weird when you’re young, inexperienced and wanted to "save" intimacy for someone special. I know of course that it’s not a real intimacy and that it's all professional. They are saving you life but still, they are strangers and do stuff with a private area of your body. At least that's how i felt...

When I was only 10 I had a tumor ( benign ) in my left chest cavity. It was really scary because my parents didn’t tell me what was going on. I remember sitting in the bathroom with my dad before the surgery feeling as though I would through up. He had to convince me that everything was going to be ok. And I’m so grateful that it was benign and everything was okay.

I had my first surgery at 2... but dont remember it. Between the ages of 22 to 31 i had 12 eye surgeries.. 2 in my blind eye and 10 in my eye i see out of. I have since had 1 additional eye surgery on ky seeing eye and 1 abdominal surgery. The scariest surgery for me was the surgery to correct the issue that was treated by surgery... i walked in being able to drive and walked out legally blind during the original surgery.. so the surgery to redo that surgery that failed was the scariest for me. The oddest surgeries were the eye surgeries being totally awake.. hearing the surgeons music, hearing them talk, and hearing the tools.

I was talking to my mom and I felt a sting in my hand (I had an IV there) and next thing I know I’m waking up five hours later with a mask being forced onto me. I was drowsy and loopy for like 10 hours afterwards and slept for nearly 6 hours 😂

I had surgery at the end of May. A retinal detatchment with fluid on the eye. All done under local anasthetic. It's super scary not being able to see and knowing that someone is poking about the back of your eye with needles and lazers and stitches. Had three days in hospital plus three weeks of posturing (lying down on one side and only being able to move ten mins in an hour) with an extra lazer session to seal more holes in the retina. It wasnt particularly enjoyable but it saved my sight. Genuinely greatful for those in the profession not only he surgeons but also the nurses etc that provide after care. They were the ones dealing with my stress puking and anxiety and upsets.

Put word out to friends and family that you are looking for a baby. We met a lady at church who was newly converted and faced a dilemma in which she had gotten pregnant and didn't want it. She saw my family and said "I wish my baby could grow up in a home like yours" and my mom said "I'll take it". We were all excited but unfortunately she miscarried a couple weeks later. But I knew someone that got 2 babies like that. People get pregnant by accident and it turns into a Juno situation.

I remember having a minor surgery when I was 11, I have a chronic illness and to get my medicine I had to have something called a port (they inject the medicine through there) and being absolutely terrified and overwhelmed. The worst part was that the initial surgery went well, but a few months later there were complications and I had to go in for ANOTHER surgery which had a lot more risk. It sucked, no child/teen should ever have to go through that; it’s not fair.

when Kristin talked about the anesthesiologist asking her where she wanted to go it reminded me of the time my mom had to get a surgery and the doctors asked her about what kind of music she liked. so during the surgery they played whatever artist she asked them to and was calm the whole time (of course they still put her under). I think it’s important that surgeons do that to make their patients as comfortable as possible.

When I broke my arm when I was nine they also put me to sleep, idk why tho 'cause I heard from a lot of people that they did it when they were awake. Apperently when the doctor started warning my mom about me doing something while sleeping my legs flew up xD After I woke up I was the most annoying person ever. "I'm fine, Let's go home." "No really, I feel great. Let me go home." "I don't have any pain, I wanna go home." After an hour they were so annoyed by me (I mean my parents) that they went up to the doctor and were like "can my daughter go home, she constantly says she's fine and wants to go home" .....They let me go... xD

I’m gonna talk about my sisters crazy surgery cause I’ve never had surgery so this was super crazy and my sister kept vomiting and couldn’t even stand. So everyone assumed her appendix was gonna explode. So they went to the emergency room and it turned out HER OVARIES TWISTED. A cyst was growing on it cause too many hormones idk and it caused her ovaries to twist. (This is super rare, FOR A 12 YR OLD) and if they had came later my sister would have lost her ovaries and not being able to have children. She has recovered and now she’s back to normal!

I had my tonsils out at the age of 26 after having years and years of problems with them, but my doctor wouldn't recommend it unless I had 3 instances in a single year ( I had problems every 6months). Finally after having an 2 abscesses, and mono (which caused my tonsils to swell so that the tonsils touched) in the same year they ok'd it. However, they didn't really want to let me bc 26 is really old to get them taken out. After I was referred to the doctor who would be doing my surgery, I was once again questioned as to wether I was sure I wanted them removed. I told them yes, bc it's really becoming a problem. I was mostly calm about it, and then a news story about a little girl who died from the exact same surgery came out. I was understanding that sometimes things happen, but I knew if I didn't get it taken care of now, I never would. My mom on the other hand was extremely nervous. When I went into surgery, I remember laying down, and as soon as they started the drip I was out. I woke up and sat up, and the nurse that was there walked (yes I walked) me back to the room where my mom was waiting. I then waited until they would let me go, and then they wheeled me out to the entrance. After we got in my mom's van, she and I picked up my brother. She asked if I was up to do anything. I told her I wanted to eat at Noodles & Co. ( I'd never been there) So just an hour and a half after I had my tonsils out I'm eating mac n cheese. The worst part ended up being the after effects of the anesthesia, but I don't regret it one bit. Sorry for the long comment!
