Thank you SO MUCH to speaking to the anxiety and scrupulosity. I struggled with this and from time to time I still do. I think it definitely comes from a place of just wanting to please the Lord and afraid of offending him, but it robs us of our peace and that is something the Lord wants to heal.

Thank you for this! Pure gold regarding the IFS and parts talk in talking about the spiritual aspect of it. I've struggled with that as a survivor of CSA and dealing with aftermath results of CPTSD, DID, and a host of other acronyms. 5 years of weekly therapy imcluding EMDR and grace of God helped save my life. Bless you both!

A lot of people discredit the entire study of psychology because of the new age pseudo scientists in the field. That’s why I’m so glad there are those like Fr. Ripperger with such an incredible background in the field and even fuller understanding of the human person through their traditional formation.

I have been a single father for 12 years. In my experience, and I think for many others, there is nothing specifically for us in the Church. Nothing. Nothing at all. Unless you consider devotion to St. Joseph something, which it is, but that’s not the way most of us think or feel or experience. The bishops are oblivious. The Pope is a hindrance. Priests are by and large unequipped. I would advise a father newly single via divorce to find friends and family who can help. The ecclesiastical hierarchy has no motivation to help us because we do not promise soon to contribute to the bottom line of the parish register. Also, the seminaries have weeded out the blue-collar priests who would have understood us in days gone by. Offer up your suffering to Christ. He too was abandoned by the Apostolic College. He understands, and St. Joseph understands bc he had to face down the insanity of Herod and maintain himself before God and all the world.

This is an interesting topic. I have worked in the mental health field for more than 30 years and I’m Catholic. I work in emergency mental health services and I am acutely aware that I am tending to souls and deal in all three spheres The mental, the physical and spiritual. It is not uncommon for me to deal with people whose primary problem is spiritual and where appropriate I give direction and this regard. It’s a big piece of my job that is generally not recognized or noted. It’s good to hear a discussion about it.

He said he would never counsel someone to get a divorce. What is your opinion on the situation of a clear case of abuse, especially where the spouse is consistently unrepentant, blames and shames and poses a danger to the family?
@yensilluap

It would not be my place to give a person that specific sort of direction - but I have encouraged a person to separate where there is serious kinds of abuse. There are cases of course where marriages can be annulled.

I think I like the word “surrender” better than “detached” although I realize the former might have of course, differing connotations for others ~ So in my mind, to be in a state of surrender would also be a form of letting go of my attachments ~ I know.... hairsplitting, but I’m one of those who can be starkly sensitive to words ~ it annoys my poor husband ~ lol ~ so I’m basically surrendering the need to hold onto my personal insecurities about any given thing ~ same as detachment but with maybe not so rough a connotation ~ “detachment” reminds me of apathy ~ or any form of uncaring ~

Interesting episode, I see scrupulosity as good in so far as it helps you to cooperate with God’s Grace (confession) but taken to the extreme can be symptom of of a psychosis. Thank u for this nugget of insight 👍🏼
@JP2GiannaT
@JP2GiannaT 3 жыл бұрын
I had it for several years. If it's severe, it's more like it cuts you off from any ability to perceive God's grace. Confession gives no relief because the second you walk out, you remember something you forgot to confess, and the rest of your day is spent trying to figure out if you forgot it on purpose, if that makes it a mortal sin, and if you're this not in a state of grace. Some people who have it won't recieve communion, ever, because they never feel like they're truly in a state of grace. Indulgences? Forget about it. Those require you to be free of "attachment to sin", and when your every waking moment is spent obsessing on if you're a dinner/currently commiting a sin, participating in an indulgence becomes impossible. Maybe having scruples can be helpful, but scrupleosity isn't ever, i don't think.

Here in the uk we have Weekend University this is an interesting set of courses or rather talks on the human condition it is steeped in secular culture and although discussion of spirituality is often covered it’s from a sacred or Buddhist bent. There’s lots of examples on KZfaq put eg weekend university Johan Hari on depression for example. How can we integrate/challenge these views when we’re so silent about our ‘Catholic Psychology and Psychotherapy’ many wise and reputable people present on this channel and I’m not hearing a Catholic response to this I think this is one example of where the Catholic faith is loosing ground to secular ideas, teaching on spirituality here in the uk for example is so integrated that any smart theory of human being is just soaked up and God and faith and religion is fringe and swept away or distorted! any ideas on this?

I think some basic relaxation type exercises (like mindfulness) is fine... to do real "therapy" in a hypnotic state, or to do EMDR, on oneself for that matter, is risky. I think the guidance of a trusted professional is important. GKC

GREAT INTERVIEW MATT !!! 50 minute mark ... WHOA ... Helping someone explore their own ideologies of life will not help them challenge their disordered beliefs, only uncover them and work towards integrating them aka healing .... I would argue that isn't healing because you are continuing to feed disordered thoughts ......When he says it isn't his professional role to impose his morals , that is correct, it's professionally unethical for licensing ... secular issues ... .. also .... it reminds me of Joe Biden's argument for being pro life personally and pro choice professionally ....

I tried Hallow based on your recommendation but, unlike the Pieta App, it had no Traditional Catholic mode so, I found it of little use. It’s entirely designed for Novus Ordo Catholics. I contacted their developers and they had no idea what Traditional Catholicism is. Too bad. It has a lot of promise but is definitely not for all Catholics.
