For my money one of the best solos Alex ever recorded - and this didn't really hit me until many years on, after I'd been playing guitar more seriously later in life - was the one in "Between the Wheels" off of GRACE UNDER PRESSURE. It is more than just a solo; it's a mini-composition all its own in the middle of the song. See kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j-CFnc2IuZrepHk.html and especially the figure that starts at 4:22
@radsterbaker65169 жыл бұрын
I started playing in high school with a "Elektra" Les Paul, a "Osbourn" sound technologies 2 x 12" P.O.S. (Which blew up at a party outside Vegas on the dry lake bed near Bob Vercoda's. Then used a 90 watt Randall head to power it after that. We were usually a 3 piece band + a singer, known as "Double Xposure" in Vegas. Ever since I have understood sounds, and the ones I want to use live and in studio, I would have to classify them as "The Alex Lifeson sound". Not by design, by by ear. A overdriven distortion with chorus, "quick tap" 400ms. delay, and slight reverb added in for that big room sound. The first time I really was happy with the overall sound I was getting was when I got a "{BOSS ME-6 w/ Expression pedal. God I loved that thing... I still have that same kind of sound today. I find that it enables the player to anticipate and cover any small "gaps" in between chord progressions and leads. Thanks Alex. Hope to meet you, and jam with you one day... 4/15/2015 Brad D. Baker aka "The Radster". Radster Baker on KZfaq.

Listening to Darren Reddick on PR has got me into Rush. Plus, I'm getting old so I need some more applicable tracks for old people. I was listening to "Outta Get Me" by Guns N Roses yesterday and although it's a great song, it's not really applicable to me anymore (unless you count the traffic wardens in my area). "There out to get me, i'm f**king innocent, please don't issue that ticket ..."

Technicaal guitarist question re: Limelight solo. (I agree, it is one of Mr. Lifeson's best ever.) The solo chorus effect has a randon character to the way it sort of "cycles", giving the effect a truly organic color-the way I had always hoped choruses would evolve. How was this achieved? Voltage-control pedal? Also, may I join the band? I can sing, I know all the required chords cold and I promise to say far away from the stage.(I can just play from backstage somewhere while viewing a video monitor.) Thanks.

The solo to Limelight simply gives me goosebumps... There's a feeling of anguish to it and depending on my state of mind it actually brings me to tears... Alex is amazingly technical and yet has so much feel and melodic purpose... I'm a fan of flashy guitar playing but I really dig this aspect of guitar as well. Most guitar enthusiasts these days are in a sort of rivalry of technique vs feeling, whereas I think both are crucial... I'm baffled though, as to why the "feeling" enthusiasts who bash on technical players don't often mention Alex that much, most usually mention guys like David Gilmour who to be perfectly honest never really affected me much...
