so is that the same friend that you had along with your other friend that you did a video a while back on what it's like to be Beat the bush or hang out with Beat the bush in that outdoors video? when she got her first credit card did she get a secured credit card? did she start out with a local bank like the bank of California or did she go straight to Chase? I would assume with an empty file she wouldn't be able to get a Chase or American express that's for people who have 700 or above? I would think a local bank not Citi, Bank of America, Barclay's Capital 1 . local bank would mean banks that are only in your area. would be the way to start out? does your friend have any thoughts about getting any charge cards to stores? the cards that you can only use in the store and store credit cards that can be used in the store and out?

Hey BTB, I have some credit card questions. What’s the best way to increase chances of getting approved for a credit card? I know there is an optimal way to apply for a credit card I just don’t know what they want to see. 1.Do CC companies prefer if you have own a home, rent, or no payment for rent or mortgage? And do they prefer it to be a smaller amount or a bigger amount? 2. What travel CC do you prefer? I don’t have a single travel credit card and I’m looking to get one. 3. I want the highest amount for a credit card possible, how often can I request an increase and what is a good amount to increase by? Do I have to have a larger salary or can it be the same? Thanks, Brent A
@djlykaen6 жыл бұрын
Hey - not BTB but ive gone through enough to know about this. The main things they looks for are the ratio of debt to limit on any line of credit, not always the total credit utilization. Also how often you get a hard inquiry can also impact the chance of approval, I waited a couple months after getting the Amex blue card (forget the exact name) before getting the Citi Double cash just to make sure it wasnt a wasted hard inquiry.
@BeatTheBush6 жыл бұрын
They prefer a HUGE salary. Own so you cannot easily run away. And have debt paid off.. i.e. very low utilization. And of course, all the things that go with a high credit score. Travel card? I got all of them basically. Just non of the $200+ annual fee ones. First year no annual fee and at least $500 sign up bonuses. 2-3 a year. I have gotten 10 the pay 4 months myself. So you can push it harder with higher credit score of 800+

I have used the 0% offers to reduce debt. If I get close to the critical date where the APR will go up, I move the balance if I cannot pay it off. Sometimes, there are no transfer fees. This used to be the case often in the 90s. Recently, DISCOVER had an offer for 0% interest with a 0% balance transfer fee and a 14 month term for the 0% interest. I set auto payments to pay off the debt asap or at least within 13 months to be safe.

So what is your take on paying off the total balance before the statement is issued verses paying the total balance before the due date? I first encountered this issue when I tried paying off my first credit card. Then later a friend encountered the same issue. Let’s say your credit card statement gets issued on the 10th of each month but you get until the 25th to pay for it. If you decide to pay the total balance off on the 20th then on the 10th of next month even though you didn’t use the card at all there will be a balance of interest accrued from your old balance from the 10th-20th. I felt that it was a cheap shot from the credit card companies to screw people over because if people think that they had already paid off that credit card in full and decided not to use that card anymore yet if they didn’t notice that last bill then they end up hurting their credit if they don’t happen to check that last balance and miss that payment.
@BeatTheBush6 жыл бұрын
Pay off all right before statement due is a trick to lower utilization ratio. Pay down to $2.01 to make sure you still owe them something for that statement period so it shows up on all credit report types. Then pay off the $2.01 on or before the due date. So two times of payment each statement period.
@realzachary31316 жыл бұрын
Wait, I thought you said to pay down to 99 cents then it got adjusted. Isn't that a better option?
@MyLady226 жыл бұрын
Wait but wouldn’t that mean that they can charge interest for $2.01?
@MyLady226 жыл бұрын
I don’t think you understand my question. This is for someone trying to completely pay off a credit card so that they won’t use it ever again. Like for example May 10th the statement is processed and the bill was $500 and you paid it off the whole bill of $500 on May 20th. Due date was May 25th. On June 10th there will be another bill of interest accrued from the balance from May 10th-20th.

@BeatTheBush. How long does your credit history typically have to be in order for and idle credit card too close and not affect your credit score?
@BeatTheBush6 жыл бұрын
When your card is idle and they close it on you, this will affect your score since your total credit limit is reduced. If you have a huge total limit then it will affect it less.
@ccbyrd29886 жыл бұрын
BeatTheBush However you said in this video that my overall credit history also plays a role in how much my score will be effected. interest is charged at *whatever* rate on the ORIGINAL balance monthly - not on the balance that is $10 less after you paid the minimum - and the same rate is applied ( on the original balance each month) *until* you pay off the original balance- read the fine print....if you use a credit card consider it the same as cash - do I have the cash to pay this? ( ie- pay the balance in full ) - if not don't buy it...

BeatTheBush I don’t think I’m gonna bother getting one. NZ doesn’t have great options and I’ve lasted this long without one. It just annoys me that hotels treat me like I have no money compared to customers who have credit cards when I actually have enough money to pay cash.

What if you close the account yourself that's one year. old with a 95 a year fee but you never used the card ??? Thanks for your answer ( anticipated )
@joerodriguez73346 жыл бұрын
freedom if your thinking of closing cause of the 95 yearly fee do it asap . But I would try get another cc with no fee to replace the 95 yearly card before closing so that the positive feedback can help in obtaining the new one.
@Ok-rk9jj6 жыл бұрын
Thanks joe. Yea I am gonna close the card tomorrow, never used it though and do not want to get charged another 95 dollars. Ps: I got plenty others. Thx again
@BeatTheBush6 жыл бұрын
The fact you never used it doesn't really make it worse than if you used it. Yes, get a card with no annual fees. $95 a year is a huge drain.

I never had a credit card so, should I get one just to buy stuff I need and pay it off right away to improve my credit score. Then once I graduate college would I have an above average credit score? Thats how that works right lol

And also you can get the Citi Double if you qualify and get 2% on all your purchases. It's like getting 2% off of life. Just remember to pay if all off every month.

BtB, this stuff doesn't really apply to me (on the other side of the pond) but I'm still glad I spent this half hour on this video because now I understand better why some people in the US struggle with credit and I also understand what you do for your patreons. I imagine that minimum fee is the greatest catch of a credit card because that's how usually people think, "oh, I only have to pay that much". And I imagine it takes a while for that minimum amount to become painful.

It's a carrot dangled in front of you saying it's free money. So you get a taste of it and you think it's free.

Just out of curiosity is there such a thing as a prepaid credit card? For example if I know next month I'll have a lot of expenses, so I put some money in advance on the card?

I also have never had a credit card. I don't think you explained it very well at the start. They are financial debt products used for day to day financing of small to mid size expenses (vs. larger personal loans), with the intention of being paid off under a few years. They are not necessary if you 1) don't care about your credit score and 2) have a good cashflow. Overall good video I learned something. You should maybe cut out the chit chat so it would be a more concise video, but overall it was helpful, thanks.
@BeatTheBush6 жыл бұрын
Sure, that is a better explanation. =D No way.. the chit chat is ESSENTIAL to this video.
