Piano you can play fuller more complex chords easily, rely more on harmonies with other notes and you can get more speed up on your solo's. As far as writing goes you get a better feel for how the song will sound as a band as you can play 2 lines with your hands. The guitar has more sustain so you can put more feeling into every note, you don't have to be as busy and you can concentrate on lead lines as both hands are working towards the same sound. Writing wise you can get a tune up quicker by strumming and therefore you can acompany yourself more easily though you are a bit more constrained by chord selection imo because as Keith said the guitar isn't laid out as logically. Both great instruments and should both be learned by any aspiring singer/writer

You don't have to carry around a piano...but you can embrace it. You wrap yourself around it. So guitar is....I think a very intimate instrument. Piano is more logical. Both in their own way...are essentially percussive. The guts of a piano is hammers and nails. The guts of a guitar is resonant space. Does anyone know the song Claire de Lune? It was written by Claude Debussy for piano and yet the most lovely arrangement I ever heard was Roxane Elfasci on classical guitar. Well worth pursuing on KZfaq. Very emotional and sensual piece.
