Welcome back to another episode of The Viall Files: Ask Nick Edition! We’re back to answer your burning questions about the world of dating and relationships. Before getting to our callers, we have an Ask Nick session with our very own, Addison, a part-time editor on the show. She is currently in a long-distance situationship, which is strictly forbidden for members on the show, so we learn about the relationship and offer advice on how to get what she wants.
Our first caller is concerned about her dating habit of getting into relationships with men who have girlfriends. After finding out for a second time that the guy she was seeing had a secret girlfriend, she seeks advice on how to stop this pattern that’s developing and how to spot red flags. Our second caller just got divorced and is contemplating taking a European vacation with a guy friend that has feelings for her. She’s wondering if this decision is unhinged considering her recent divorce. Our final caller found Mr. Right, but thinks he’s unattractive. She’s never met a guy who understands or treats her the way he does, but is worried his hairiness is something she can’t look past.

For the first girl who is the Editor on the show. Your situation was analyzed to the death by the household. It's maddening! It's actually pretty very simple: if he wanted to, he would. Move on and find someone who won't hesitate to be with you.

On the other hand, I think it will be helpful to her to put everything on the line and end things completely rather than leaving loose ends in a fake "friendship" that will only give her false hope and cause her more pain in the long run. I think it will give her closure and more confidence to be fully honest and take her power back to decide where the relationship is going: either relationship or we're done. Analyzing what happened will hopefully help her learn from the experience and not make the same mistakes in the future.

@lees2404 true. But I suppose I look at it in the sense that he did say he didn't want to date her. The she's going to go back and put everything on the line for her to be rejected again!? Nonsense. If he says he doesn't want more than friendship, believe him. No need to go back for one last ditch effort. Just end it. Period.

@@andreegodbout868 I don't know. It worked for Natalie. I also have a friend whose current BF, who she's been living with for years and is probably her "person" for life at this point, initially rejected her when she asked him out, but she got to know him more and they eventually wound up together. It's apparent in this story that he likes her, so why not just really shoot her shot and lay it out there? I don't see what harm it would do as long as she completely walks away and doesn't let him back in without it being an actual relationship. Literally, no harm no foul aside from your pride being hurt a little bit from being rejected? But that's better than wondering "what if" and staying in this "friendship" for god knows how long. If someone has the chance for closure why not take it?

This episode was so good! Much needed things to hear and I will mention I was a caller in the past (obvi wont disclose which ep haha) but wanted to comment that I came across another similar situation where I almost found myself in a situationship/FB experience which I am NOT wanting. I was transparent and told the guy I was talking to what I wanted and what I am looking for and that I didn’t think we were aligned on whatever him and I was. So I ended it before I got more attached! Hearing these stories has helped me continue to process what I’m going through and reassuring me I made the right decision! There has been times where I’d want to reach out BUT I remind myself that no DIQUE is that good to disrespect myself like that so yeah, we are out here doing whats best for US! REMEMBER YOUR OWN WORTH LISTENERS AND CALLERS!! Because thats the one that matters most!

Lol at third caller. "I think he's mr right but i think he's ugly". Some of these people calling in are insane and need to be kinder to their partners. As much as I enjoy listening to the pod for the content - if you're calling into a podcast unsure if you're attracted to someone you have your answer. Cut your losses and do the dude a favour.

I'm in agreement! At some point, he's going to make her make a decision (date or not) and she's going to break his heart and could have all been avoided, if she was honest with him....'I enjoy the time we spend together/how you make me feel/things you do for me, however I don't think there's a romantic connection.' He'll resent you trying to change him, instead she should say what she needs from him vs. what she doesn't like about him.'

As far as I know, "that feeling" in your stomach can means anxiety or strong sexual attraction it does not alway communicate danger...

This girl going to Europe, why on earth would she go for 8 months?? Can't she just book a 2 week vacation, then on xmas break also book another trip to europe also or spring break like there have to be more options than isolating yourself with this guy. like traveling is Expensiveeee and if you don't have money its gonna be the same issue as at home, except in someone else home- sitting home ?? idk feels like she's running from life

Also, I hate it when people call in with their minds already made up re: the issue they're asking advice for. She had already made up her mind that she was going on that trip no matter what Nick said, so why even bother calling in?

Really disagreed with the advise Nick gave to caller who had the chance to go overseas to Europe for a year. what an opportunity! Yes it could be risky regarding this guy liking her, but what if he's awesome, and they have a great time? It is possible to live and find a great life outside of the USA..... He just seemed way too anti it for my liking. She's so young and deserves to experience the world

I really like Addison. She is cute. Hope she comes on again. I empathized with her situation. While I think Nick is right, friendship is important to a romantic relationship you don't have to trade one for the other you just carry both foward with you to build that relationship up. There is nothing better than finding a companion that also shares a strong romantic passion. But don't isolate one over the other. Your strategy going forward should be to cultivate both and use that as a rock solid foundation with shared values.

I think the issue is that a LOT of women on this show tend to use "being friends" as an excuse to accept less than what they actually want in a relationship with the men in their lives, which leads to them being passive and allowing the male "friend" to call the shots and sort of trap them in a situationship. A lot of the women on this podcast aren't honest about what they actually want, even to themselves, which leads to them being confused and passive in their relationships. Unfortunately, I think in most cases when it comes to heterosexual relationships, "being friends" often muddies the waters and it's better to be clear in your intentions of wanting to date someone. You can still form a solid foundation of friendship with someone you are dating, but if it isn't clear to both parties that the ultimate goal is a committed romantic relationship, you're not going to be on the same page.

Love the show. The young woman that just got divorced needs to finish her education and play basketball with people she is not that happy with. In life (when we get older) we realize that we have to learn how to get through this type of issues. There is no need to run off and not get your education. Trust an older person, you can go on a trip with others that you will not feel obligated to possible be in an uncomfortable relationship. Trust wisdom from the older generation.

Last caller is a bit off putting. She started by saying that she really likes this guy because he loves everything about her and doesnt want to change anything about her. And then she moves on to say that she wants to change his physical appearance, like his back hair…. girl, there is almost CERTAINLY a chin hair or mustache hair of yours that he has noticed that he aint saying anything about… swallow your ego and get to know him better. Stop being so vain!
