Q&A session lead by Swami Sarvapriyananda as part of a spiritual retreat at the Vedanta Society of New York on May 3rd, 2020. List of questions with timestamps:
• 6:25 -- How to know the Self when It cannot be objectified? Is inference sufficient?
• 27:30 -- While we agree that waking, dreaming, and deep sleep are experienced in consciousness, why can't we say that they are real instead of unreal since they are indeed experienced?
• 44:50 -- If the realization of atman is an experiential reality, then why is there a logical conflict between different spiritual traditions? Does it mean that the realized master's have different experiences?
• 54:35 -- If consciousness illumines Maya, then why does it need the support of Maya to realize itself?

ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
ABOUT US
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

I have listened to many of his talks over the last year. I am an Assistant Professor and he is one of the best teachers I have come across on any subject, but certainly the best on non dualism Advaita Vedanta. Uplifting to hear him recite whole passages from The Upanishads in fluent Sanskrit. His references and direct quotes are so varied and diverse. From ancient texts of different religions to neuroscience and quantum mechanics, all delivered with a sweet smile, great anecdotes and wonderful sense of humour where necessary. One day I will travel to New York and pay homage to this great teacher.

If we try to understand Consciousness without the help of the teachings of Sri Ramkrishna we will never be able to achieve our goal. The classic example of a cloud covering the sun, when the cloud passes the sun becomes visible although it is always there, similarly when the veil of ego is removed by HIS grace Consciousness will be revealed. In this Kaliyug He came in the form of Sri Ramkrishna to teach the world the highest philosophy with simple stories and illustrations.

Thanks Swamiji!...That you spoke about the similarity of Buddhism and Advaita pointing towards the same IT, I am so glad you humbly pointed to that Truth; and reminds me of what both of us so positively discussed and debated! The Brahman of Advaita is same as Void of Buddhism! - in as much as they both pointing to a unknowable reality of that Source (IT) in the best possible way of expressing IT with dualistic language of this 'transactional' world! And when I say the following I say it very humbly but have to say it - the sentimental foolishness and/or arrogant (intellectual) foolishness (again mere words only!) in humans including the religious minded or spiritual minded people keep interfering in expressing the truth in the manner it can be pointed to equally (from all schools of thoughts). Understanding that any mystical experiences AFTER ALL are ONLY experiences in this existence and NOT beyond this existence...We need to stop making others as Gods and the Realized ones and not blindly follow anyone, and be our own God! Realize our own Divinity or Warriorness (again words only!) - as my great Warrior Swami Vivekananda so ardently spoke about... As you suggested, I have read more widely including Osho and Alan Watts and have contemplated further and humbly believes that I have come closer to living at the Source :)...My presence is as much as just 'in' this world as it is 'of' this world. Thanks again for your humble existence and presence amidst this humanity. Soham! P.S. Probably you may have already read, but if you get a chance, pls read Osho's - Tantra: The Supreme Understanding, and Alan Watts' - The Book: On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are

Swami, your clarity, humbleness and the incredible grasp of the scripture let’s you aim your arrow of enlightenment straight to my Atma. I feel an awakening approaching. Is it possible without meditation? Namaskar. I was going to wish that the universe conspires to facilitate your journey but listening to you I realise that that would just demonstrate my lack of understanding your message. I dnt know my question is making any sense but i think knowlege and discrimination is the key of this spiritual journey 🙏

Swamiji. Thank you for your talks. I have been following many and they have been immensly helpful to my spiritual path! I'm a big believer of learning from different point of views. I believe that the furthest the origin of the point of view the greater the learning potential. I love how you always draw connections between the Advaitan point of view and that of other spiritual traditions. I have never heard you mention Daoism. I also follow that tradition with great interest and love the concept of ultimate reality of a flowing Dao from which all forms emanate. Could you ever consider drawing a parallel between Advaita and Daoism? From two such traditions which emanated independently in different cultures we are bound to get a nice lesson in examining their differences and similarities! Thank you in advance for your consideration ! 😊

Another example I have encountered is the "concept" of black holes - something from which not even light can emerge, due to its intense gravitational force. You can only infer its presence through what can be discerned from the events horizon, the edge of the black hole. Is a black hole real? Or, is it simply a concept that is inferred? Do we need to "see" a black hole to know that a black hole exists? What about the dark side of the moon? Never "seen" but clearly inferred.

The notions of Self-knowledge and Self-consciousness can be tricky. The eminent R.D. Ranade wrote that 'the Self can become an object to himself... Self-knowledge or Self-consciousness is the ultimate category of existence ('A Constructive Survey... ''). Can it be said that Consciousness is Self-reflective? Thank you, A. Martin.
@ksoldestaccount7654
@ksoldestaccount7654 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, consciousness is self reflective because consciousness is all existence and consciousness reflects itself within itself thinking it is reflecting itself and is not itself, since it is knowledge itself that tries to know, and to know there must be ignorance, and knowledge creates ignorance go delude itself.

Calvin, don't try to comprehend the Self using your faculties, using mind. Self is the Turiya, the fourth, the common undercurrent cutting across the 3 states of mind: Jagrut, Swapna, Sushupthi (waking, dream and deep sleep). Think; where are you during deep sleep? How do you infer that you were in deep sleep? Hint: what's happening during deep sleep? Figure this out and you are there! 🙏
