I particularly appreciate, "All founder started with laminitis, but not all laminitis becomes founder." Ah, got it! I think I was exposed to too many occasions where laminitis and founder were used interchangeably when the etiology of laminitis didn't actually have anything to do with the metabolic issue of founder. Very helpful video about this and worth a bookmark to send others as this comes up. My experience isn't vast, but would it be fair to say that most cases of laminitis present at spring turnout and are diagnosed as founder vs. other causes?

+Smartpak, what is more deadly to horses? Laminitis or Founder?

Thanks for your question, Cody! This is a tricky one because the definition of these two overlap quite a bit and any time you’re dealing with either of these issues, it is important to take them very seriously. The definition of laminitis can cover a variety of severities, from very mild issues with the lamina to something that can end up becoming much more serious. Founder, on the other hand is generally associated with laminitis that has reach the point of physical changes to the hoof and therefore is associated mainly with more serious cases. That being said, these terms can be used interchangeably at times and if you have a question about an individual horse’s case, we’d recommend checking in with your veterinarian. - SmartPaker Carolyn
