Questions answered in this episode:
1. How do I know how much weight a horse can carry (how much the rider can weigh before it gets "bad" for the horse)? I know it depends on age, experience and muscles on the horse, but can you count it out?
2. My horse was diagnosed with Lyme disease this past winter (we live in CT). Her most prominent symptom was behavioral change. She went from a laid back easy horse to being very difficult to handle. What are some of the other signs/symptoms of Lyme disease in horses? What are the treatment options? Can it cause any long term complications?
3. Could you explain the difference between hay stretcher and extender and forage replacer? Is it companies using different names or is there an actual difference?
4. I'm considering getting a fly sheet for my horse, but living in Alabama it stays pretty hot and humid year round with the exception of three or four months. Is there any point where it may be too hot/too humid for a fly sheet while out in the pasture? Would I be better off without a fly sheet?
5. I was wondering if you had any tips on a horse that is very sensitive to bug bites in the summer and ends up with hives and rubbing her mane/tail out?

I feed my girl 1Tbsp of garlic powder in summer (1tsp in winter) and it has helped her a lot. Bugs still get her but nothing like before. Might try to ACV this summer too.

My horse was diagnosed with Moon Blindness (aka recurrent uvitis) last fall. Well, we treat it as it occurs and she responses beautifully but it has occurred four to five times over the last six months. One time being in both eyes at one time which made her temporary blind. My question is there something we can do to try and prevent so many occurrences? I put a fly mask on her when it is windy and in the summer but do you have any other suggestions? I just want to make my girl feel better more of the time! #askthevetvideo

My vet has recently told me that she thinks one of our horses has neurological EHV-1. I don't know very much about this, but I was told it could spread. Are my other horses in danger? What can I do for my current horse with this condition, is euthanasia the best option? #askthevetvideo

My miniature horse is a little over weight she is supposed to be 250 and she's 300 and I'm wondering since its spring and lots of lush grass pops up if I should get her a grazing muzzle or cut her grain she gets 1/2 a quart of grain.

+M Raymond If she's overweight, she doesn't need hard feed as it's not helping her. It's a good idea to either restrict her time grazing, put he in a dry/ empty pasture or use a muzzle. Consulting a professional is the best idea.

+Kellie Dubuc Kellie, I’d love to say it was my supernatural psychic abilities, but some of my fellow SmartPakers are pretty dubious about that response. In truth, I think it was a combination of luck and the fact that your questions revealed a level of passion and intellectual curiosity about horse health that goes a little above average. I hope that the schools you’re applying to see that as easily as we did! Good luck in your applications, and #haveagreatride! - SmartPaker Sarah

How long should you wait to give your horse water after a good workout? Can the water be cold or should it be a moderate temperature? #askthevetvideo
@MosaikHorse
@MosaikHorse 8 жыл бұрын
+Molly Head You can sponge their mouth (polo style) and it depends on how hard they worked and it's best not to give cold water at all. You should wait 30-45 minutes approximately and be cooled down properly and a sweat sheet applied if appropriate.
